    1. [HCGS] Farm maps; 0-15 and 0-16, Coon's Run, Long Run, Shinnston area
    2. The farm/gas maps I have been using for about twenty years and the one I bought today, show the families living in the areas listed in the subject line above. I got these maps at Clarksburg Blue Print Company. The maps are titled "Fairmont N.W. 41..Fairmont and Clarksburg N. E. 38..Shinnston". There were several different farm/gas maps produced by different gas companies. I am not familiar with the maps in O-15 and 0-16 and don't know why they don't show family ownerships. The many maps I have are by Hutchinson and McCrary, Marietta, Ohio and are dated 1911. The maps I have match the Gen. Survey maps with the same title, ie: Shinnston and Fairmont, etc. I also have maps for other counties, mainly, Taylor and Barbour Counties. I have some maps for Kanawha County but they must be from a different source. I use to pay less than $5.00 for copies of the maps; today, I paid $12.00 for one map. Dick: based on our emails last night, the map I bought today, Shinnston #38 is the map you want for Long Run, Enterprise, Pine Bluff, Peora, etc. These maps have been very helpful to me when trying to determine exactly where a family lived, sometimes as long as two hundred years ago. Of course, you have to do some courthouse work to put it all together. I found out today that Clarksburg Blue Print Company has moved around the corner from Milford Street to Duff Street in the Stealey section of Clarksburg. Perhaps they moved when they had a fire. The last time I looked, they do have an Internet website. 3. Dick I think Thomas BARTLETT c1733-1806 had a large farm there: south of Lumberport; west of Gypsy (on the west bank of the West Fork R.) Like you, I am disappointed there are no named plats in this area. Jim - Sent from my iPhone - FaceTime! 3. Using “Find A Grave”, “Billion Graves” and “Place names” are great ways to make virtual tours on the Internet.    A couple maps sites like Google maps let you click on a little yellow character and drag it to the street.  Then you can take a virtual tour down the street.  It lets you rotate and raise or lower the camera angle.  It also lets you move ahead and back and turn corners.   Not that much of rural areas have been photographed but for those that have, it is a great little tour in cyberspace.  Dave Kuhl 210 Glen Eagles Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564-9041 e-mail: dbkuhl@bellsouth.net ________________________________ From: Jean Binns Smith <shejean@verizon.net> To: Sharon Bramhall <sharon.bramhall@yahoo.com>; "hcgs@rootsweb.com" <hcgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tue, October 2, 2012 9:12:51 PM Subject: Re: [HCGS] Coon's Run area Thank you, Sharon.  About the same time  you were looking my  father took me to Coons Run and showed me the  Radabaugh homestead  and then down to  Adamsville, which I think was named for Adam Radabaugh.  He remember when my great grandmother was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Shinnston  and we went there  and found their graves.  I never tried to go any further back hunting in cemeteries , mostly  because  I live in central Pa and get there so seldom.    I took a picture of the  homestead and I think the was a picture of it on the web site in an article   I wrote to Dick Wilt.   A GOOD LAUGH AND A LONG  NIGHTS SLEEP ARE THE TWO BEST CURES FOR ANYTHING. 2. Dave, Sorry for the delay in answering your question and email last week- I am on the road with my dog ---making a bid for her final advanced herding titles with AKC, we were in Tacoma Washington when you sent the email we picked up her Herdign Excellent B Course Title on sheep which borought her up to being one of the very few German Shpeherds to earn advanced titles in all courses sanctioned by AKC on sheep-, The B course is a really nice title for GSD. The course was set up based onthe speed and quick flanks and retieving instinct of Border Collies in the Northern Britiash Highlands- we competed against only borser collies in outr advanced titles bid all summer- I am in transit to Denver area to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Specialty.. we will be in seven events in six days on three venues- with two four courses per day... comepeting against some of the top Germans Shepherds/owners/breeders/handlerws in the western USA. I just got the intial Trial Progrmm for the GSDCA - and no one has decided to run against my dog in B course. There are ten dogs in A course- over this weekend we tooka third and second places at an open trial to a borderr collie onteh A course with nine compeitiors both days.. Got to keep moving so we can rested in Coloradpoo I quickly looked at some of the posts on the topic thread... and a couple on the spinoff topic on the Disrict maps.. one thing I can quiclkly say is that these maps were downe for ownership and identifying royalties and well locations. The porperty lines may be a bit more artititic than absolute lines. But they do give a good representation of neighbors.or at least lAND OWERS- These would be of exceptional value IF they were digitized in the proper format for layering. I had few otehr comments but I just checked my inbox and see your new post about squeezing more inforamtion and that sort of opens up the big caN OF WORKMS FOR TRACT MAPPING for genealogy... I think I need to leave this for here right now and get back to it after next weeek Best regards Paul Pettit --- dbkuhl@bellsouth.net wrote: From: Dave Kuhl <dbkuhl@bellsouth.net> To: hcgs@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HCGS] FARM MAPS Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012 10:08:12 -0700 (PDT) Great question Ruby.  I’m glad to see that everyone is looking at these maps.   Dick Wilt, is there a way to show a grid of the districts over these other grids?  If not can you place a map near by showing the districts?   While we are thinking of ways to improve accessibility, would it be worth while to have a map of census enumeration districts as part of the mix?   I compared a map from Cedarville, Gilmer County against the 1900 census and was able to identify neighbors who later became in-laws and other close family ties including the half sister of my GGF and several of his children.  Dave Kuhl 210 Glen Eagles Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564-9041 e-mail: dbkuhl@bellsouth.net ________________________________ From: Ruby Casto <recasto47@frontier.com> To: hcgs@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, October 1, 2012 10:11:06 AM Subject: [HCGS] FARM MAPS Which one of those maps is Eagle District? I can't vouch for the others.  Dick Wilt said he thought the gas company maps were as early as 1890.  Dave Kuhl 210 Glen Eagles Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564-9041 e-mail: dbkuhl@bellsouth.net ________________________________ From: "cn8ff@aol.com" <cn8ff@aol.com> To: hcgs@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, October 1, 2012 6:47:32 PM Subject: Re: [HCGS] District Map Map date 1886 -----Original Message----- From: barbara.cobb <barbara.cobb@comcast.net> To: hcgs <hcgs@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Oct 1, 2012 3:54 pm Subject: Re: [HCGS] District Map Does anyone know the time frame of the maps?  The maps are very interesting. I just put up the pdf map. 2. Dave and all, Does anyone look at the small print...look at the top and you will see a link to a map of Harrison County that shows all the districts....I'll make the print larger.... 3. I kept looking at the farm maps until I found Eagle District and that is Lumberport, WV and it is in N16. I was looking for my grandparents who were T. J. Matthews, usually I find them under Mathis but on these maps it was Matthews. Now I'm trying to find a S. L. Drain who is also in Eagle District. I quit looking for awhile. Thanks Patricia. Ruby
