Lyle Corder In a message dated 10/12/2012 14:44:23 Eastern Daylight Time, dbkuhl@bellsouth.net writes: conduct a systematic search to find the location
I received a request for some guidance in finding a family farm. I got lucky and found the location within a few clicks. However, before looking at the map, I set finger to keyboard (use to be pen to paper) to come up with some guidelines of how to look at what you know and then conduct a systematic search to find the location. All of the maps are displayed for Harrison County about 1910. These are not government maps. They were made by a private entity to support the gas exploration boom at the time. So the accuracy and completeness is certainly questionable. If you have looked the family up in a census, check their location regarding the magisterial district. The districts as of 1886 are listed on an adjacent map. The link is right above the map grid listed in big black letters “Harrison County Districts Map”. Click on the blue letters “Map”. http://www.wvhcgs.com/ If you have physically been to the location, you might recall a road or community near the location or on the way to the location. That would be another clue on finding them. Maybe your parents took you there as a child. Also remember towns that you did not go through or bridges that you did not cross to get there. That will suggest that the road turned off before you got to some recognizable landmark such as a train track. Are there any relatives still living who might have visited there? Ask them. The watershed creek draining the area is also a clue to finding the location. In the early years, the highest ridges were somewhat of a barrier to transportation. There was more of a trend to stay within their same valley to go to church, to go to the local store, etc. Climbing a steep road to get over a ridge in the winter or in wet weather was a lot more of a challenge before there were paved roads. There are a series of creeks or runs draining into the West Fork from the west. From Clarksburg south, these are Davisson Run, Coburns Creek, Sycamore Creek, Buffalo Creek, Isaac Creek, Two Lick Creek, Kincheloe Creek, etc. These were never big enough to factor into transportation. However, the roads which paralleled these naturally became known as the same name such as Davisson Run Road paralleling Davisson Run. So, that is another approach to take. What was the drainage named? What valley were they in? That should identify the road. Churches? Cemeteries? Where were they married? Where were they buried? These were likely closer to where they lived. Schools may be another clue. The old Sycamore School where Sycamore Creek runs into the West Fork has been preserved as a private home. There are many little towns (really wide spot in the road) such Kinchelo, Benson, Big Isaac, Tichenal, Jarvisville, etc. Many of these were early post offices. Some will appear on early census. Do you have any early correspondence which might give you a clue as to where they lived? There may be an address on the envelope. They may mention taking livestock to sell in one of these little towns. . You may have some really good clues as to where they lived already in some of your research. So, that is my list of suggestions on how to find your family on the WV Farm Line Maps. Census district Memory of living people Church or cemetery name Drainage creek or road name Post office? Old letters? School Good luck. Don’t give up or suffer in silence. One of the benefits of being part of such a friendly, helpful group as the HCGS is that there is a good chance that someone else knows the answer to your question or can give you a good start on finding the answer. I received an e-mail from Ted Wolfe, president, of HCGS and he said he stopped at the Parkette and reserved the back room for our Christmas dinner. It will be on December 15th and we can be in the room from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. Mark your calendars and hopefully we can have a good turnout. We usually do. Thanks, Ruby
The Harrison County Genealogical Society Web Site has been updated with Ruby's Notes for October 6, 2012 meeting. Dick Web Master http://www.wvhcgs.com
The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this date with 5 persons in attendance. I'm sure the weather kept several away from attending the meeting. It was raining and turned much colder. Diana wasn't there as she had to go to the airport and pick up her brother. The trip to Washington, DC had to be canceled once again as there was not enough interest in it. David said he had about 15 that showed an interest in going. He said it might be better if they would try a trip in the Spring so everyone could get rid of their cabin fever. David had a couple of new books and a CD. One book was on preserving genealogy materials and the CD was on the Loyalist in the American Revolution. He also had a book donated by Dennis Rogers, and it gives a detailed account of where to search for records. We also discussed the first marriage bond book at the courthouse. We would like to have a copy of it as there is a lot of genealogy material and family names giving their consent. David is going to talk to the clerk to see what would be the best way to go get a copy We have obituaries from 1996 to the present and Antero (not sure of the spelling) would like to make copies of all of them. This is a gas & oil company who is looking for heirs and they feel like these obits would be of a big benefit to them. David is suppose to get in touch with them and negotiate with them the best way for them to do the copying. The roof on the Waldomore is going to be replaced and it will start the first part of November if the weather is favorable. The Waldomore will probably be closed while the roofing takes place. The next meeting will be held on the 3rd of November and we will either meet in the Waldomore or the conference room at the main library. The September newsletters needs folded and sealed, but we didn't get to it today. Ted Wolfe is going to get in contact with the Parkette Restaurant to see if they have a Saturday opened in December for our annual Christmas Dinner. He was looking at the 15th of December at 2:00 P.M. He will let us know what he finds out. Does any of you have sit down Christmas games that we can play or any ideas. Diana has been doing them, so I'm sure she still has the websites she gets them from also. It is always good to have some new ideas. Don't forget it is getting time for dues to be paid. Our dues run from January 1st through December 31st each year. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS

The library has several of the maps, procured several years ago from Clarksburg Blueprint, which has the technology to make a digital copy, insofar as physical size is an issue. Presumably we could also scan them in sections and reassemble the images. As for copyright, I don't know how it applies to materials produced by a firm like Hutchinson & McCrary for use by clients. In any case the maps have been freely copied for years. Ritchie County Historical Society, of course, sells farm maps for several counties. We bought the original offering for the library but haven't added others as they became available. I promote the purchase to my customers, in part because it benefits RCHS. Years ago I assembled patent maps for much of Harrison and a few parts of neighboring counties. These can be superimposed on topographical maps, the limitation being that the old surveys were often done in a slapdash and sometimes a dishonest manner. Reconciling them to reality can be a challenge. Still, one opportunity would be to bring the titles down to 1810 or 1820 using deed records and then match the result to census returns for those years. (In the 1830s and after, many old titles were voided for taxes and patented a second time, which complicates the business of reconstructing the landscape.) What does the library or HCGS have? The best information that I could come up with on copyright is that they were all before 1923 and were all therefore public domain. Do you have a scanner which will copy the maps? If i can talk Lyle into bringing his paper maps in could you copy them onto an electronic image? I really appreciate the Farm Maps and all this chatter surrounding them. It's good to know there are alternative maps! For the first time in years, I feel as though I finally have some HOPE - that I am zero-ing in on an illusive ancestor. This is because, with these maps, I can now better visualize the route the census taker may have taken. I've spent the last two days highlighting properties and researching those families, trying to determine who goes with whom. Of course, I have ruled out quite a few - but negative answers are also good answers because it narrows my finalists. I'm crossing my fingers that 1886 is not too late to see heirs still living on the critical properties. THANKS SO MUCH! I got these maps at Clarksburg Blue Print Company. The maps are titled "Fairmont N.W. 41..Fairmont and Clarksburg N. E. 38..Shinnston". There were several different farm/gas maps produced by different gas companies. I am not familiar with the maps in O-15 and 0-16 and don't know why they don't show family ownerships. The many maps I have are by Hutchinson and McCrary, Marietta, Ohio and are dated 1911. The maps I have match the Gen. Survey maps with the same title, ie: Shinnston and Fairmont, etc. I also have maps for other counties, mainly, Taylor and Barbour Counties. I have some maps for Kanawha County but they must be from a different source. I use to pay less than $5.00 for copies of the maps; today, I paid $12.00 for one map. Dick: based on our emails last night, the map I bought today, Shinnston #38 is the map you want for Long Run, Enterprise, Pine Bluff, Peora, etc. These maps have been very helpful to me when trying to determine exactly where a family lived, sometimes as long as two hundred years ago. Of course, you have to do some courthouse work to put it all together. I found out today that Clarksburg Blue Print Company has moved around the corner from Milford Street to Duff Street in the Stealey section of Clarksburg. Perhaps they moved when they had a fire. The last time I looked, they do have an Internet website.
