My gr'father Jesse B. HAYES b. 1880 in Carmi, IL was son of James Valentine (Volney) HAYS. Volney was b. in 1843, and d. in 1881 in Spencer Co, IN. I too am having problems finding out anything more about my Volney...where he was b., his siblings, parents, children, etc, aside from my gr'father Jesse. Does any of your info say anything about a James Valentine(Volney) HAYS? In your 1860 census, Volney would have been in his 17th year. Volney would have been about 55 years younger than your Jesse HAYS...quite possibly a grandson, or grand nephew??? Volney would then named his son Jesse (my gr'pa) after him.
