Born in Antioch, Tenn., he was a 36-year resident of San Diego County and lived in Santee. Sam served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring after 24 years of service as an E8 Senior Chief Boatswains Mate. He worked 18 years as a custodian for the Chula Vista School District until his 2nd retirement. Preceded in death by his son, Sam Hays, Jr., he is survived by his wife, Catherine, daughter, Cathy Hays of Santee, brothers Harold, Dick and Wilbur Hays and sister Evelyn Robinson all of Tennessee, daughter-in-law Karen Hays and two grandchildren: Shannon and Sean Hays of El Cajon. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 8, 3-7 p.m. with Rosary at 6 p.m. at Paris-Frederick Mortuary, 374 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 9310 Dalehurst Rd., Santee. Military Honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. wi! th interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Everyone who knew him loved him.
