Mr. Hays Death Occurs April 19 A resident of Clifton for almost 40 years, Marshall Hays, aged 77 years, 11 months and 13 days, of 403 North Avenue D, died at his home at approximately 1:25 o'clock on Friday afternoon, April 19. Mr. Hays had been in ill health for approximately the past nine months, and his physical condition had confined him to his home for the last two months prior to his demise, during which time he gradually became weaker. Born on May 6, 1879, in Kansas City, Missouri, William Marshall Hays was one of the seven children of the late Mr. And Mrs. W. L. Hays. He was reared in Kansas City, Missouri. It was in 1919, following the end of World War I, that Mr. Hays came to Clifton. For many years he was employed as a carpenter by the Humble Pipeline Company at the Pendell Station near Clifton and also in various other parts of Texas. Even when his work took him to other towns, Mr. Hays called Clifton his home. (Part of this line unreadable) Mr. Hays married Miss Amy Nelson, a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Neil Nelson, respected residents of this city. To their marriage were born three children - one son, William Nolan, and two daughters, Mary Ellen (Mrs. Crockett) and Hazel Jane (Mrs. E. L. Conner). Mrs. Hays was ill for many years, and she preceded her husband in death on April 6, 1942. Miss Julia Nelson, an aunt of Mrs. Hays, has made her home with the Hays family for the past 33 years, during which time she helped take care of the children during Mrs. Hays' illness and continued to make a home for them and Mr. Hays following her death. Until his retirement because of declining health approximately four years ago, Mr. Hays continued his employment as a carpenter in this vicinity. He enjoyed visiting (unreadable), and during his active years, took pleasure in fishing and hunting. Most of his leisure hours, however, were spent with his family. Left to survive Mr. Hays are his son, William Nolan Hays, of Clifton, his two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Crockett, of Clifton, and Mrs. E. L. Conner, of Rutledge, Georgia; five grandchildren; one brother, Edward Hays, of Kansas City, Kansas, and a half-brother, Grover Spiva of Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services for Mr. Hays were held at 10:00 o'clock on Manday morning, April 22, at the Clifton Funeral Chapel and were conducted by Reverend Walter R. Gigstad, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church in this city. Pallbearers were Rene Stanford, of Cranfills Gap, and Walter Petzold, Otto Schmidt, J. W. Blewett Jr., Arthur Holes, and Robert Gloff, of Clifton. Interment followed in the Clifton Cemetery. Members of Mr. Hays' family have the most heartfelt sympathy of their many friends in the loss of their father, grandfather, and brother. If anyone else is researching this family, please email me.
