Hays had only one brother, Thomas Thompson Hays who m. Sarah Drake. His sons were named John B., Robert B., Stokely Donelson, Thompson, and James, all born between 1818 and 1840. Was your William McEwin Hays a son or grandson of one of these? I am descended from Harmon A. Hays' half-sister, Sarah A. Maxwell, one of two daughters born to Rebecca (wife of John Hays) and her first husband, Capt. Thomas Maxwell.
