I have been researching my gr'grandfather James Valentine (Volney) HAYS (b. 1843) for some time now. He and some of his family were from the Carmi, White Co. ILL areas, as well as into IN (Spencer/Warrick Co's). Volney's son, my gr'father Jesse B. HAYES, b. Carmi in 1880 then the family moved back to Spencer Co. Some HAYS' stayed in White Co. ILL. Looks like the ones that came back to IN changed the spelling...put the 'E' in HAYS. THESE are the HAYS families that are giving me all of my problems in trying to locate. Volney m. a Melvina FORTUNE, of Spencer Co, IN. Melvina's dad was Wm. P. FORTUNE (b. 1828 in Spencer Co. IN), son of Williamson, and so on back down the line. Other names in this group include JONES, MOORE, COCKEREL, BAKER, POLK(E), Hope there is someone out there with info on Volney's family...parents, siblings, etc. Tks in advance, Craig HAYES

I am seeking information about and contacts for the following Hays family: SAMUEL HAYS b. 1813 Warren County, Ohio, d. unk. (prob. Illinois), m. 1836 Warren County, Ohio to ELIZABETH MARTIN b. 1816 Warren County, Ohio, d. between 1853 and 1860 either Ohio, Michigan or Illinois. She was first married to William T. Wright of Warren County. He died 1833. CHILDREN: 1. JOHN LEWIS b. 1837 Rochester, Warren County Ohio, entered Union Army in Illinois rising from Private to Captain, d. 1924 Howard, Elk County, Kansas. He was a physician who practiced in Paris, Ill. Wichita, KS and Howard KS., m. 1866 Paris, Ill. to Sarah Elizabeth Patton b. 1841 Illinois, d. 1930 Howard, Kansas. Children included Harriett (b. 1867 Illinois, d. 1950 San Diego, CA) who married Fred Baldwin; Will who married Cora Franklin: Jane (b. 1873 Paris, Ill, d. 1945 Howard, KS) who married George Smith; Alice who married Park Hale; and Russell who married Stella Dallas 2. MARY ELLEN b. 1840 Darke County, Ohio, d. unk. m. 1860 to Jeremiah Hill b. abt 1835 Illinois. Children included Benjamin C., Annie C., Emma M. all born in Illinois. 3. ELIZA ANN b. 1841 Darke County, Ohio. d. unk. m. McMahon (perhaps John) 4. EMILINE M. b. 1843 Darke County, Ohio d. 1934 California, married to Julius Kent in Paris, Ill 1868. Children included Ernest, Carl, Webb, Harley. 5. SAMANTHA A. b. 1847 Darke County, Ohio d. 1924 Bridgeport, Ill, married 1866 in Bridgeport to George A Tromley (b. 1843 Ill, d. 1922 Wayne City, Ill) Children include: Glen B. b. 1878, Maude A., Grace b. 1867, Charles A. b. 1872, Dwight, and Clarence b. 1875. 6. CHARLES IRVING b. 1851 Darke County, Ohio, d. 1938 in Utah, m. 1887 to Izamba A. McIntosh. Children: Irving Winfield b. 1889 and Earle Samuel b. 1891. (Charles may have married again to __ Bratner.) Samuel may have married a second time to Kate M. --- or Mary Catherine (a Canadian born). Children included William B. b. 1872, Essie b. 1875 and Elda B. b. 1878. Samuel resided in Warren County Ohio until about 1838 when he and Elizabeth moved to a farm in York Township, Darke County Ohio. Around 1844 he sold the farm and apparently resided in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. In 1846 he bought another but smaller farm in Wabash Township, Darke County. This is where most of the children were born. In 1853 he sold that farm while residing in Berien County, Michigan. While Elizabeth is recorded on the sale documents, she may have already been dead. The family, without Elizabeth, appears next in 1860 in Christy Township, Lawrence County, Illinois. Samuel is shown in the 1860 census as a physician. He practiced medicine in Bridgeport, Ill for many years afterwards. Anyone with information about any member of this family please contact me (kentgl@adelphia.net). I am also interested in determining the children of John Hays and Betsey Kelsey. They may have been Samuels parents.
Looking for any link in these surnames Durham, Reeves, Chester, Hays, and Cardiff in Pickaway Co., Monroe, Ohio in 1840's. Chester and Cardiff along with two boys Samuel and Jacob Durham were in Danville, Vermilion Co. IL. in 1860. Both these boys in 1850 where living with the Chester and Cardiff family in 1850 in Pickaway Co. Monroe, Ohio. This leads me to think they were orphaned before 1850, so I am desperatly looking for the names of their parents. A Jacob Durham is buried in a small cemetary in Pickaway County, Monroe, Ohio, died in 1847 at the age of 45. Other Durhams could also be buried there. The cemetary is on land once owned by the Hays family. There is also Samuel Reeves buried in the cemetary along with Hays family members. There were no Durhams in Pickaway Co. in 1840 but in a book there is mention about New Holland, Marion Township that says, This is John (Johnny) Durham's grandson (Johnny was the son of Thomas & Margaret Lindsay Durham. He moved to Ohio in 1816 with his son John and his wife Mary Ann Payne(later married Mary McFarland). Johnny died 1821, son John in 1853. Durham property spanned the county line, Johnny's property was disposed of in the records of Pickaway Co, Johns will was supposed to be in Fayette Co. apparently envelope was empty. This Durham line between 1789 and 1815 shows eleven children possibly all boys, born. Any links any one has with these surnames in Ohio would be greatly appreciated. Barbara __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
