James Valentine (Volney) HAYS, born 1843 (don't know where for sure) was my gr'grandfather. He died in 1881 at age 38. Getting info on his parents and siblings has been a very tough exercise for me...need some help here!!! He m. Melvina FORTUNE, of Spencer Co, IN in1875. They had my gr'father Jesse B. HAYES in Carmi, ILL in 1880, but then moved back to, or were still, living in Spencer Co, IN. I believe they were visiting other relatives in Carmi when Jesse was born. Jesse m. Gola Edith (Goldie) BAKER in Gillett, ARK, then returned to Spencer Co, IN where my dad Huey Hanson HAYES was born in 1907. Your connections of the HAYS lines from Indiana and Arkansas is very coincidental to my own situation. Can you give me some more info from your data. Somewhere along the time when my Jesse was born (1880), someone in the family added the E to HAYS. This was a common occurrence. However, there are a lot of HAYS' still in the Carmi, ILL area. I am working with a potential cousin there trying to make connections. Please get back to me, if you will. Hope you have some good info. Craig HAYES

In 1840, they moved from Richfield, Monroe Twp., Juniata Co., PA to Fox Twp., Elk Co., PA, where Edward died a year later in 1841. He was believed to have been a teacher, and I believe there is a Mennonite connection somewhere. In 1932, Edward Dixon Hayes, a member of the U.S. Congress from Missouri and a descendent of Edward and Catherine Hays, wrote a family tree for his two children. He did research at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and in his family tree, he claims that Edward Hays, Jr was born February 17, 1797, and that his parents were Edward Hays, Sr. and Sally Ann Patterson, and that he was reared in Greenwood Twp., Juniata Co., PA. Edward Hays, Sr. allegedly died shortly after Edward Hays, Jr's birth in 1797, and Anna Patterson was supposed to have married a man by the name of Henry Heiser and had four more children by him. I can confirm that an Anna Patterson, who was a daughter of Robert and Jane Patterson of Greenwood Twp., Juniata Co., PA married a Henry Heiser and had four children. However, I CANNOT confirm that this particular Anna Patterson Heiser was first married to Edward Hays, Sr and had a son Edward Hays, Jr born in 1797. I have no idea what source documents that Edward Dixon Hayes found at the Library of Congress that lead him to this conclusion. Any help? Ideas? Information?

If that is not the right Joseph, he might still know him, considering the town. Let us know what happens, I think this is really interesting. Good luck! Lorenda Todd

Her parents were William and Mary BATH(BASH<BATTE) Thomas F. and Alice J. were married in Somerville,Ma. 3 July 1862. During there marriage they had Thomas F.2HAYES (he started out as Frank T.HAYES)and changed it to Thomas some where along the line.Born 1871 Boston,Ma.I have recently learned that Thomas may have had had a brother Charles T. With your extensive info, maybe you can shed some light. I've been having trouble finding info on my gr'grandfather James Valentine (Volney) HAYS. Don't know where he was born, or died. Born in 1843/44, probably southern IN or southeast IL, and probably buried in southern IN. The reason for my 'probablies' is those are the areas where I can find family since that time. He had family in White Co. IL and in Warrick/Spencer Co's, IN. My gr'fther Jesse B. HAYES was b. in Carmi in 1880, but spent most of his life in So. IN, and then about 1909 moved to McLean Co. KY. I know that the HAYS clan helped settle the White Co IL area, and I have recently been in touch with some HAYS' still there. My problem...I don't have anything on Volney's past, either parents, siblings, etc. Hope you can help. Tks, Craig HAYES
