I wonder if your Tom Hays died from the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918. The disease ran rife throughout the WWI training and deployment centers. It was especially deadly for men from rural areas, as they had not built up immunity to diseases that children growing up in big cities had developed. Andrew Jackson. I know the sale occurred in 1804. But this is his lineage as far as I've been able to find. David and Hugh were brothers. Their parents were Charles Hays and Barbara Unknown. She apparently died some time, and Charles remarried a Margaret Stevenson, in Greene County, TN. having several other children. David Married a Jane Collier. Charles Parents were John C. Hays Junior, and Rebecca Maxwell. You said that they were related to the Donnelson's. If this is the same David and Hugh, the were related. David and Hugh would be Grand Nephews to Jane Donelson. Jane is the sister of Rachel Donnelson, the wife of Andrew Jackson. I've recently found a large amount of information on this part of the Hays family, and am sorting through it, all the wills and land grants, etc. to see if a relationship exists. Also the Architechural Historian at the Hermitage is supposed to have finished a project on Historic Structures at the Hermitage, that dealt with the rumor that Hugh or Nathaniel built the original buildings at the Hermiate in the 1700's. He too was looking for information concerning the Hays family at the site. I'll be glad to share whatever information I find on this part of the family, or any other part. I'm also related to the Butler/Hays that founded Jackson TN, and the earlier Hays' that founded Haysboro, TN. Also the same branch of the family as John "Jack" Coffee Hays (My 1st cousin, 6 times removed).

At this time the most likely date is June 1839. His father was most likely Samuel Hays (b. 1801 in Greene Co. Tennessee, d. 6 Mar 1914 in Rockwall Co, Texas). Robert’s mother was probably Elizabeth K Gray. Robert G Hays married Mary Ann Hartman 28 Nov 1872 in Kaufman Co. Texas. Their children were Bradford Hays (b 15 Oct 1873), Samuel Hays (b. 22 Feb 1875), Jane Hays (b. 1 Jun 1876) and Mary Hays (b 1878). To the best of my knowledge all the children were born in Rockwall County Texas. I believe Robert G Hays siblings were Catherine Clemons Hays (b 1833), Mary Ann Hays (b. 1835), and Elizabeth Hays (b. 1837). The family is included in the 1850 Census in Greene Co. Tennessee. In the 1860 Greene Co Tennessee census Samuel, wife Elizabeth, and son Robert are shown. Elizabeth K Gray (Samuel Hays wife) died Nov 1867 and left a will which did not mention her husband Samuel but mention her daughters Catharine M Pickering, and Mary Ann Brumley and son R.C.G. Hays. I have been able to find any record of Samuel Hays death but assume he died before 1867 when Elizabeth died. Does this tie into any of your ancestors or known Hays families that moved from Greene Co. Tennessee to Rockwall (or Kaufman) County Texas.

John Hays and Rebecca Maxwell, are my 6th great-grandparents. I've been trying to research them but was having no luck whatsoever. Now it looks like some of that has changed. The information that I have on this generation is mostly by hearsay, rather than hard evidence, but I heard that John and Rebecca are both imigrants from Ireland; setteling in Rockbridge County, Virginia. I have no clue if that's real or not. But it was interesting. I would love to hear more about this part of the family; and what part of Ireland and all they came from. I've looked for web sites related to them but haven't found any yet. The portion of the Hays family I've been most heavily researching is from the children of their grandson, Robert Hays, my 4th great-grandfather. From his children on there began a great migration from Greene County, TN, to Fremont County, Iowa, and the town of Watson, Acthison County, Missouri. I'm trying to find out why this happened. Even more strange is why my 3rd great-grandfather chose to go to Rockwall Texas before moving on to MO/IA. It's very interesting work so far, and even more now that I know I live about 45 minutes away from this part of the country. I guess I should say thanks for your postings and welcome to the family.

Their son,John (1728-1796), had two wives during his life in PA, Barbara KING and Jane WALKER. Their family is well documented in PA history. I have never found any relation to Rebecca MAXWELL or her husband John HAYS (who apparently emigrated to MD or VA in 1750). Their descendants include some very distinguished early Americans, tho'. I have been studying the emigrant John HAYS (1704-1789) for over 50 years and continue to find little things about the HAYS family and would love to find out any connection of your John and my John if you can establish one (either on this side of the Atlantic or the other). Your John HAYS is mentioned several places in the genealogy sites on the web if I remember correctly. Let me know if you can connect Jim HAYS (Knoxville, TN)
