We have a connection. I was in Saline County over Memorial Day, 2005. I have looked for Nathaniel but haven't found him or his supposed widow, Polly, in SC. Mary supposedly raised her children along the banks of the Pee Dee River. Nathaniel was supposedly killed in the RW, though I haven't found him yet. I have ordered William's war record (he was in the War of 1812, serving in Mississippi with Gen. Jackson in his campaign against the Creeks. I would love to hear from you. Phil Lindsey

I am presently brickwalled by a "Nathaniel Hays" of SC. I can confirm my 4th GGrandafther as William Hays, married to Martha Hamilton. they arrived in Saline County, Missouri in 1815-1816. There is also a contemporary Hugh Hays in that vicinity. My bet is a relationship bewteen them. Though it is said Nathaniel Hays died inthe RW, I cannot find him (yet) in the SC Continental Line rosters. Perhaps he was an Over-the-Mountain man? Perhaps fought at Kings Mountain. My LIndsey line also originated in SC, in Spartanburg. Any chance we relate on either line?

(and presumably widowed) is head of a household with 1boy 10-15; 1 boy 15-20; 2 men 20-30; 2 girls 0-5 and 1 woman 20-30. In November of 1850 "DELILAH HAYS," 53, NC, and her extended family are still in Tippah Co., MS, Division 3, p. 564. In her household are "PARTHENIA HAYS," 12, TN; MARY and ALETHA BALL, 11 & 9 & ELIZABETH VINCENT, 4 - probably grandchildren. Nearby (on p. 563) is her son, "ELIAS HAYS" (Elias B. Hays), 22, TN; "MARTHA," 17, TN (Martha Crutcher) and their daughter "MARY E.," 1, MS. Also nearby (p. 567) is her presumed son "JOHN HAYS," 26, farmer, NC; "FRANCES," 23, AL; "NANCY F.," 6, TN and a "Riley Martin," 18, AL (possibly younger brother of Frances.) Next door (p. 567) is another presumed son, MARTIN HAYS," 21, farmer, NC; "MARGARET R.," 21, TN. These are the only Hays people in Div. 3, Tippah Co., MS. This family probably left Tippah, MS in 1851 or 1852 in time for the birth of Ardena in 1852. It's possible that either John and Frances Hays or Martin and Margaret R. Hays are her parents, but there are problems with both candidates: (1) Also living in Pittsburg, Johnson Co., AR in 1860 is a presumably widowed "John Hays," 39, NC with "Isabelle," 6, AR and Francis," 4, AR. IF this is Delitha's son "John" from the 1850 Census, then he's probably not Ardena's father. (Since she was orphaned by the tornado). (2) Martin disappears in 1860 and is probably dead, but his wife, Margaret R., of 1850 is most likely the "Margerat Hays" listed right under Delitha in 1860 - her widowed d-in-law. BUT - if Margaret is a daughter, and not Martin's widow, then - maybe Martin and Margaret R. are her parents. OR - maybe it was another unknown son and you're back to square one! Any other ideas? Barb

MAGDALENE STOKES (HAYS); however, their daughter MARY LEWIS HAYS, b. 1852, was apparently tragically widowed at a young age. As you noted, Mary married GREENBERRY A. DUNCAN, b. TN, 1846, in FLORENCE, LAUDERDALE CO., AL, in 1872. Greenberry, son of Jonathan Duncan (1798, KY) and Elizabeth, (1802, SC), was one of 12 children, including a twin. In 1850 and 1860 this family is found in Henry Co., TN and Marion Co., AL.("Jonathan Duncan" on Familysearch.org will bring up this family.) The following is from a posting on the Genforum Lauderdale AL Message Board, by Rena Duncan, on 13 June 2002: "Looking for any information on the killing of Greenberry Duncan near Florence in 1876. Greenberry worked at a gristmill in the area. The story is told that he was killed by a man named Vaughn in a dispute over a debt or land." "Greenberry married Mary Lewis Hays (Hayes) at Florence in January 1872. Greenberry was the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Duncan and had a twin named Thomas J. (Jefferson?). They had three children, twins ROBERT NELSON DUNCAN & BENJAMIN McGAHEY DUNCAN and a daughter, MARY ABNER ELIZABETH DUNCAN. The children were 3 and 1 yr. old when Greenberry was killed. Mary and the children lived close to her brothers after Greenberry's death. They all moved in fear of another killing involving the Vaughns." Does anyone in the Florence area know of this tory and family or is there someone that could check records or papers in the area for information?" There were a few responses to this posting, mostly concerning research possibilites. But you might try contacting Rena Duncan and posting on the various boards to try to find out what happened. Good luck, Barbara
