I am a DAR member in Texas, I cannot believe that anyone would be required to locate a birth certificate back that many generations. Texas for one state did not start registering births until the early part of the 1900's. My mother was born in 1913, and she did not have a BC. She got a delayed birth certificate at some point (I think in the 50's) in anticipation of Social Security. My father was born in 1891, and he also got a delayed birth certificate in anticipation of retirement and Social Security. He worked for a large company, Humble Pipe Line, which later became part of Exxon-Mobil, and apparently they did not require a birth certificate when he was employed with them, but did require one to retire. I am not an expert on DAR by any means, but birth certificates cannot be required (except for the last century or so) because they have not always existed. DAR uses copies of Bible records, census listings, wills, baptismal records, and possibly other items to prove lineage. And census records in which each name was enumerated only began in 1850. I am presently working on a supplemental application, and I cannot prove some of it and am still digging. My (supposed) GGGGF is a proven Patriot. I have a copy of his will in which my GGGM is provided for along with a number of other siblings, and her husband, my GGGF is listed as an executor. But I cannot prove my GGF's relationship to her and cannot find a marriage record for my ggrandparents. And I may never prove it. The DAR chapter's Registrar is the one who helps in getting the application in order. As in all things, some people are better at their jobs than others. Check back with the chapter again. They may have a different Registrar now, or the old one may have learned more about her job. Betty: My family has two members (great-great-aunts) with DAR records. I have those record numbers, and am wondering if they remain certified by the DAR. For example, Would it be appropriate for a daughter to reference the G-G-aunts' record number, and only prove direct linage to the aunt? Or, must her entire line need to be reconstructed back to the Revolutionary War participants? ----------------------- I got a chuckle from Nel's comment, "...[the] DAR was accepting applications based....more on 'who' you were in society. Mrs Got Rocks was a shoo-in for membership and a fauncy piece of paper to hang on her wall..", because my DAR aunts also joined the "ROCKEFELLER SOCIETY". At the time, the society was limited to Rockefeller family descendants (very, very distant in my aunts' case). Choosing not to point out the weakness of their society blood-line, the aunts placed their RS certificate, which was bigger and 'fauncier' than the DAR certificates, in the most prominent location on their Drawing Room wall. And for some time they hosted ladies society meetings beneath those certificates. Unfortunately for my aunts, the Rockefeller Society became primarily a philanthropic foundation, and began to press its members to donate an extra $1,000-5,000 per year for public causes, colleges, and national parks in the tradition of the founding Rockefellers. The aunts quietly removed their RS certificate from the wall.
