Born in Port aux Basque, N.L., he was a son of the late Nathan and Dinah (LeRiche) Hatcher. He had a lifelong love of both the sea and his family. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas from 1939 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Navy on overseas convoy duty. Wilfred worked for DND in the Canadian Naval Auxiliary Fleet until his retirement from the CNAV Quest in 1981. He is survived by "the love of his life", his wife of 65 years, Lucy (Cutler); daughters, Karen (Melvin) Burt, Edmonton, Alta.; Kathy, Halifax; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, W. Brent; his uncle, Simeon, and aunt, Lily Hatcher, who raised him, and brother, James. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, September 26. Funeral service will take place in St. Mark's Church, Halifax, Wednesday, September 27, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Janet Hatt and Rev. James Purchase officiating. His ashes will be interred in St. John's Columbarium following the service. Family flowers only. Donations in Wilfred's memory may be made to QEII Foundation. The family wish to gratefully acknowledge the love and care from the nurses and staff of 4.1 who made Wilfred's last days so comfortable for him and his family.
