OK, here is what I have and know... and it may be way more than you want? Liz's given name was Jane Elizabeth Hatcher; she married John Allen Tharp on Jan. 02, 1809 in Warren County GA. On the Marriage License she was listed as "Elizabeth Hatcher". His father, Grand father, and G Grandfather listed their names as Allentharp one word, John and his sister used the Tharp usage the best I can tell based on the records. His father was Vincent T. Allentharp and his mother was a Miss Rogers, given name not known. Vincent was born November 18, 1760 in Grantville, Va. and died at Stone Creek, Twiggs Co. Ga. On September 23, 1825. His father Vincent is the one who dropped the Allen from Allentharp and simply listed his name as Vincent A. Tharp. Later generations added the e to Tharp to make it Tharpe which is still in use today in lower Monroe County Ga. I have been to a cemetery in southern Monroe County were many early Tharpe's are buried with headstones of that spelling. (wwh) The Tharp's like the Hatchers participated in the land lotteries and obtained land in Crawford County Ga before moving slightly north to Monroe County. I have actually met and talked with some present day Tharpe's that still live in southern Monroe and are related to my wife's Ham families... Keep in mind, Twiggs County is in between Wilkinson and Bibb County and Wilkinson is where of Mj. John lived and where most of his children grew up, this we know from the Bible and countless other records.. Originally Stone Creek was in Wilkinson County which later become Twiggs County. So the Allentharps and the Hatchers were both in early Wilkinson and Vincent was a preacher involved in the Ebenezer Baptist Association of which Mt. Nebo was a member as well as the later Ebenezer Baptist Church both of which are very close to Mj. John's original homeplace where he is buried. I can attest to all of this as I have been to all of these places.. Allentharp. When he moved to Twiggs County in 1811 and his home was on the east side of Stone Creek. I have records of his family from his family Bible and as many of his descendents continued too live in the neighborhood, my family among them, I was able to learn about them. His old home is still standing and I have been in it several times. There is a historic Marker in front of the old house. Vincent was one of General Marion's men (Swamp fox) for he had moved from Virginia to South carolina. After the Rev. war he moved to Warren Co. Vincent A. Tharp or Vincent Allentharp was the father of John A. Tharp who married Jane Elizabeth Hatcher ,daughter of Major John Hatcher Sr. and Mary Brady. Vincent Tharpe was also a Baptist minister. Vincent A Tharpe (1760-1825) served as a soldier in South Carolina under Gen Francis Marion Bibb County Estate Returns, Bk. From "The Messenger", Fort Hawkins, issue May 10, 1823. (Note: Dathier should be Bethia/Bethier, right?)during the revolution. He removed to Georgia after the war and became a Baptist minister. He was born in VA; died in TwiggsCo, GA. ___________ Vincent T. and Sarah (Pierson) Allentharpe In "Georgia Baptist Historical and Biographical" by J. H. Campbell he states "Vincent Tharp, a native of Virginia was born in 1760 and bore arms in the cause of his country towards the close of the Revolutionary War." The family Bible gives the date of his birth as November 18, 1760. He came with his family into the Sumter District, South Carolina before the Revolution. When the British overran South Carolina and required all males between 15 and 60 to join the British Militia, in some way, Vincent Allentharpe did not obey this order. Even as his father and brothers joined the British, Vincent slipped away and joined the forces of General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. He was taught to make nails in the blacksmith's shop. This knowledge served his well for years later he helped make nails for the Briar Creek Baptist Church in Warren County, Georgia. Owing to the hardness of the times, and his being a poor man at the time, he learned the gunsmith trade, and was said to be a superior workman. For his services he was given a land grant in Washington County, Georgia, in 1784. Vincent is described as being tall, dark, a large man, with one blue and one brown eye. He married a Miss Rogers in South Carolina about 1780. This marriage received a son and daughter before this Mrs. Allentharpe died sometime between January 1783 and 1786. Exactly when he moved to Georgia is uncertain for the early records were lost. On January 10, 1787 he married Sarah Pierson, a daughter of Jeremiah Pierson, who had moved from Fairfield County, South Carolina, to Warren County, Georgia. Vincent was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Wilkes County, Georgia, on December 20, 1792. Also he was Justice of the Peace in Warren County, Georgia, on June 23, 1796. It was at this point that he started signing his name Vincent A. Tharp. Vincent had dropped the Allen in his name as had all his other relatives in Georgia. From then on he signed his name A. Tharp and all the children, including the girls, used A. Tharp. Between 1850-1860 the A. was dropped and the name was Tharp. Another generation added the 'e' so the spellings of Tharpe. The Allentharpe family attended Aquia church and St. Paul's church in Virginia. They were known as "Church of England." After the move to Warren County, Georgia, there was no Church of England in the neighborhood for after the Revolution the people hated the name of England and there were only six Church of England's left in all Georgia. Vincent joined Briar Creek Baptist Church in about 1800 as it was near his house. He was ordained as a minister shortly thereafter. He preached at several churches in the vicinity, including Sweetwater and Rocky Creek, and was the pastor of Briar Creek from 1802-1811. In 1809 Vincent A. Tharp sent two sons and some slaves to build a house for him and his family in the Stone Creek neighborhood of Wilkinson County, Georgia. The house was built and the Tharp family moved into the house in 1811. He became pastor of the Stone Creek Baptist Church and remained until his death in 1825. Stone Creek was one of the earliest churches in the county and soon became an influential church. It was called the Mother Church for middle Georgia. Vincent served as Moderator of the Ebeneezer Baptist Association a number of years. He preached at Richland Baptist Church in Twiggs County and served other churches in the neighborhood. This story is told of Vincent in a book by Mrs. McSwain. While preaching Vincent carried a small songbook in his pocket. One day his son, John, who was known for being mischievous, made a switch in the pocket contents. During the service when it was time to sing, Vincent reached in his pocket and pulled out a deck of cards. Everyone had a good laugh. Vincent, however, wasn't amused. To this union of Vincent T. Allentharp and Miss Rogers two known children were born: 1. John A., born September 1, 1781 2. Mary A. born January 28, 1783 To the union of Vincent T. A. Tharp and Sarah Pierson eight known children were born: 1. Elizabeth, born September 11, 1787, died before 1829 2. William, born October 5, 1788, September 25, 1841 3. Charnick, born February 27, 1790, died November 19, 1867 4. Nancy, born January 15, 1792, died 1843 5. Jeremiah, born October 1, 1793, died June 26, 1870 6. Fletcher, born November 17, 1797, died September 12, 1825 7. Rebeccah, born October 3, 1801, died young 8. Sarah, born January 25, 1803. Vincent died September 23, 1825, and was buried in the old cemetery on the top of a high, rocky hill near where they original Stone Creek Baptist Church then stood. Sarah Tharp continued to live in the old homeplace after Vincent's death. She died January 1, 1832, and was buried in the cemetery on the church grounds next to her husband. However her grave was never marked. A Daughters of the American Revolution Marker, was placed on Vincent's grave on October 30, 1955. It was said of him "benevolence and hospitality was prominent traits in his character." On Monday, March 19, 1987, it was discovered that vandals had dug up the grave of Rev. Vincent A. Tharp. Thankfully the vandals had not dug deep enough to disturb the 162-year-old coffin and remains. The decision was made by family members to remove the graves from the now remote area and bring them down the hill to a safe setting. At this time it was noticed that on the bottom of Vincent's marker is the statement that it was made in Italy. The old markers were sent to America as ballast for a ship. This one came to Savannah, Georgia, and it was the custom in those days to haul the markers by oxcart the two hundred miles from Savannah. The graves were moved to the Davis Family Cemetery near Macon, and a dedication ceremony was set for June 6, 1987. This cemetery is located in a chin link fenced area, about a 100 yards off the north side of Franklinton Road, approximately 1-2 tenths mile off Highway 80 between Macon and Dry Branch, Georgia (closer to Dry Branch). Exit I-16 at Spring Street and take Highway 80 south 7 miles. References: Georgia Archives History of Stone Creek Baptist Church Gerogia Baptist Historical and Biographical, Early Ed. The only link to connect her as his dau is the fact she made a purchase of a slave at John's estate sale. That's it, folks!! Now I've just found a estate sale records for John Davis in BibbCo, GA (where John/Liz Hatcher Tharp lived/died) dated 1826-27 where DEMPSEY Hatcher was a purchaser. (I have these images if anyone wants copies). 1) Dempsey bn c1797 was s/o Tom Jr/Martha, s/o Tom Sr/Wilmoth. 2) Demp md Charity Goodwin, died in ShelbyCo, AL. 3) Demp is now known to have been in BibbCo, GA among neighbors very close to John/Liz Tharp. Others of the Tharp family were also purchasers. Now let's take a quick look at Tom/Wilmoth. http://hatcherfamilyassn.com/getperson.php?personID=I39133&tree=WmtheIm They were md somewhere between 1757-1761, best calculation. 1757 is the important date :-) Then look at son Tom Jr http://hatcherfamilyassn.com/getperson.php?personID=I42091&tree=WmtheIm Demp appears to have 2 older unnamed sisters, bn c1791 and c1793. 1793 is the important date :-) Question - did Demp just land in BibbCo by accident or was he there because he had family - namely sister, Liz Hatcher Tharp? Now for the grand theory of the day..... 1) Tom/Wilmoth md around 1757. Maj John was born 1757. Is Maj John the eldest s/o Tom/Wilmoth? Is Maj John the older bro of Tom Jr/Martha? 2) Liz Hatcher Tharp was born c1793, a match to an unnamed dau of Tom Jr. Is Liz the d/o Tom/Martha, sis of Demp, and NIECE of Maj John? I do not know (yet) where John Tharp's parents came from. Do any of you have info on the Tharps? Can anyone shoot me down with good evidence if there are holes in this possibility? If not, is it something worth pursuing and any suggestions where and how? Questions? Answers? Discussion?? Cheerios...... HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood W W (and all), First, if you are giving her the name of JANE Elizabeth based on this record... Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery, 1832 Number - 240, District - SEVENTH DISTRICT, FIRST SECTION, CHEROKEE. Jane Hatcher, Residence - (Whipple's) Wilkinson Co. widow. Note the 1832 date. This is Jane Hatcher, WIDOW of James Hatcher who died 1832. Elizabeth Tharp was not widowed until 1834. The most important problem with Maj John is that there is not a single record in the hundreds we've accumulated that ever ties John to any parents or directly to any other Hatcher in all of GA. SO! I think this is the hottest stick of dynamite I've stumbled on in a long time! And will list a few details for your consideration..... Proven 1) Tom/Wilmoth were md in a time frame making it possible to have Maj John in 1757. 2) Tom/Wilmoth were in SC by 1770. 3) Maj John first shows up in 1779 (age 22) in a military record. It does not ID his state of residence. 4) Maj John in WilkesCo in 1792. 5) Liz Hatcher Tharp is born 1793, state unknown. 6) Maj John in WarrenCo, GA in 1794. 7) Dempsey is bn 1797 in Edgefield, SC, s/o Tom Jr/Martha. 8) Liz md John Tharp, WarrenCo, GA 1809. 9) Maj John moves from Warren to Wilkinson in 1810. * According to W W's notes, Liz and John moved to Twiggs (or BibbCo) by 1811. 10) Dempsey is in BibbCo before 1826. I have uploaded the 5 John Davis estate recs to Demp's page at http://hatcherfamilyassn.com/getperson.php?personID=I5459&tree=WmtheIm Cross check those many names on those pages and compare them to the names mentioned in W W's notes, particularly the Davis family. A Tharp dau md a James Davis, likely connected to John Davis of the estate sale. I think being able to place Demp directly in the middle of the Tharp/Davis families is way more than a coincidence, particularly considering we have been unable to connect Maj John to anyone else until now. We do know there's no evidence of a Demp as a son in John's family. While it's not possible (so far) to determine the relationship, I would have to say Demp, Liz, and Maj John are very closely related, not as John's kids but his nephew and niece. I think this could be a real YA-HOO situation :-) Now we really need to firmly prove it with more records or stronger circumstantial evidence. Nel
