Delving through my Hatcher paper files, I came across a copy of a Bible page that Ala. Bob shared with us back in June 2001. Across the left and top margins of the Bible page is written: "Children of James Hatcher son of Major John Hatcher died April 20 - 1835 married Mary Brady died July 18 - 1835." The Brady surname is also found in "Wilkinson County, Georgia: WILLS - 1817-1920," by J. T. Maddox, page 118: "WILL OF JAMES HATCHER (son of John and Mary Brady Hatcher)(John was a Revolutionary soldier) James' wife was Sara Clay, daughter of David and Eve Hardin Clay..David Clay also Rev. soldier." Will dated April 19, 1842. There are several other books/publications that refer to Mary Brady as the wife of Major John Hatcher, and others that show a connection between Maj. John and Brady men. In the Saturday, January 29, 1791 issue of "The Augusta Chronicle" is a list of "the Malitia of Columbia Co. GA. In the Twelfth Company: Capt. John Hatcher; 1st Lt. Edward Van; and 2nd Lt. Samuel Brady. 1794 Warren Co., GA tax list: Samuel Brady with land in Warren Co on Joe's Creek, joining Hatcher's land. Also a Lewis Braddy, same tax list, in Captain Hatcher's District. Lewis had 1660 acres, 1 poll, 1 slave. (I've wondered if Lewis was the widowed father of Mary Brady Hatcher??) Beneath Lewis's name on the same tax list is the name, Patrick Brady. This Patrick had 250 acres on Joe's Creek in Captain Hatcher's District with 1 poll, no slaves. March 26, 1796, Warren Co., GA deed: Patrick Brady, Sr. sold a tract of land for $100.00 to John Henry Pickard, located on Joe's Creek bounded on the southeast by John Hatcher's land. This was part of Patrick's land grant. Another joining landowner was a Robert Brady. One Patrick Brady died in Warren Co. Dec. 1820 and left a widow named Delilah. So, there seems to have been to have been a span of years in which Capt. John Hatcher was in the same proximity as some folks named Brady. John Hatcher and Patrick Brady both were granted land on Joe's creek in 1786. 1840 Wilkinson Co., GA Census: Samuel Brady, Sr. and Samuel Brady, Jr. One Samuel Brady was co-administrator with John Hatcher, Jr. on the estate of John Bozeman of Jefferson Co., GA, documents recorded in Crawford Co. where John, Jr. was resident. Joyce *************** regarding the maiden name of Maj John's wife, Mary BRADY. She has pointed out that the connection appears to have been made from the fact that both Robert (no longer considered to be John's father) and Patrick Brady both had land grants placing them in the same area on the Savannah river. > > You will say that John named his 1st born Jeremiah Brady, but did he?
