She has pointed out that the connection appears to have been made from the fact that both Robert (no longer considered to be John's father) and Patrick Brady both had land grants placing them in the same area on the Savannah river. You will say that John named his 1st born Jeremiah Brady, but did he? John Jr's bible states: Page 678: BIRTHS 1st COLUMN Jeremiah B. Hatcher was Born February 26th 1813 We have 2 additional records on Jeremiah where he is listed only as Jere and Mr Jerry Hatcher. On our file John's dau, Nancy (md Wm Hancock) has their 1st son as Jeremiah Brady Hancock, but was that his middle name? I have only 1 census for J B Hancock and he is simply listed as Jeremiah. Where are we getting this Brady name from? Anyone have any sourceable input on this Brady name?? Nel Does anyone have proof that was
Delving through my Hatcher paper files, I came across a copy of a Bible page that Ala. Bob shared with us back in June 2001. Across the left and top margins of the Bible page is written: "Children of James Hatcher son of Major John Hatcher died April 20 - 1835 married Mary Brady died July 18 - 1835." The Brady surname is also found in "Wilkinson County, Georgia: WILLS - 1817-1920," by J. T. Maddox, page 118: "WILL OF JAMES HATCHER (son of John and Mary Brady Hatcher)(John was a Revolutionary soldier) James' wife was Sara Clay, daughter of David and Eve Hardin Clay..David Clay also Rev. soldier." Will dated April 19, 1842. There are several other books/publications that refer to Mary Brady as the wife of Major John Hatcher, and others that show a connection between Maj. John and Brady men. In the Saturday, January 29, 1791 issue of "The Augusta Chronicle" is a list of "the Malitia of Columbia Co. GA. In the Twelfth Company: Capt. John Hatcher; 1st Lt. Edward Van; and 2nd Lt. Samuel Brady. 1794 Warren Co., GA tax list: Samuel Brady with land in Warren Co on Joe's Creek, joining Hatcher's land. Also a Lewis Braddy, same tax list, in Captain Hatcher's District. Lewis had 1660 acres, 1 poll, 1 slave. (I've wondered if Lewis was the widowed father of Mary Brady Hatcher??) Beneath Lewis's name on the same tax list is the name, Patrick Brady. This Patrick had 250 acres on Joe's Creek in Captain Hatcher's District with 1 poll, no slaves. March 26, 1796, Warren Co., GA deed: Patrick Brady, Sr. sold a tract of land for $100.00 to John Henry Pickard, located on Joe's Creek bounded on the southeast by John Hatcher's land. This was part of Patrick's land grant. Another joining landowner was a Robert Brady. One Patrick Brady died in Warren Co. Dec. 1820 and left a widow named Delilah. So, there seems to have been to have been a span of years in which Capt. John Hatcher was in the same proximity as some folks named Brady. John Hatcher and Patrick Brady both were granted land on Joe's creek in 1786. 1840 Wilkinson Co., GA Census: Samuel Brady, Sr. and Samuel Brady, Jr. One Samuel Brady was co-administrator with John Hatcher, Jr. on the estate of John Bozeman of Jefferson Co., GA, documents recorded in Crawford Co. where John, Jr. was resident. HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Good morning, Joyce! You wrote: Across the left and top margins of the Bible page is written: "Children of James Hatcher son of Major John Hatcher died April 20 - 1835 married Mary Brady died July 18 - 1835." A question...is the above writing 20th century? It does appear to have been a notation added in the margins by someone attempting to identify people but certainly not present at any of the dated events. You wrote: "Wilkinson County, Georgia: WILLS - 1817-1920," by J. T. Maddox, page 118: "WILL OF JAMES HATCHER (son of John and Mary Brady Hatcher)(John was a Revolutionary soldier)...." In digging, Maddox appears to have written his books in the 70s so we at least know how far back the Brady name has been out there. But Maddox has placed the Brady name in parans, indicating it is his belief without providing a source for this belief. "January 29, 1791 issue of "The Augusta Chronicle" is a list of "the Malitia of Columbia Co. GA. In the Twelfth Company: Capt. John Hatcher; 1st Lt. Edward Van; and 2nd Lt. Samuel Brady. 1794 Warren Co., GA tax list: Samuel Brady with land in Warren Co on Joe's Creek, joining Hatcher's land." Hmmm! Below is what we have on file and it's clear the abstracts I rec'd weren't complete. ---------------- Augusta Chronicle and Gazette, January 29, 1791, p 1 states that John was assigned to serve as Captain in the 12th Company of the Columbia County Regiment of Militia under the command of Colonel William Few, Esq, Lt Col Jesse Sanders, Esq, and Major William F Booker, Esq. Another version states: Augusta Chronical and Gazette of The State, (Sat., Jan. 29 1791), "The rank and arrangement of the Militia of Columbia County." lists Capt. John Hatcher as captain of the 12th Company, with 2nd Lt. Samuel Brady. -------- I did not have Edward Van's name (the Van(n) families were all over EdgefieldCo, SC). But the above does show that John and Sam Brady were well acquainted with each other first as soldiers (and likely the same rough age) and were both in ColumbiaCo in 1791. Note the name Lt Col Jesse Sanders - interesting :-) I "think" that many of these land grants were given as payment for military service and it's possible that John and Sam (as close friends?) arranged (or traded) to have land near each other. Joyce, have you done any research on Sam's military career and/or state of birth? I just did a military search on ancestry and have found nada. One record found of GA soldiers with just his name listed in the index. I will go now to see if Sam is on Footnote. Nel
HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Reporting back........ There are NO records for a Samuel Brady in the RW records for GA/SC. "1791....the Malitia of Columbia Co. GA. In the Twelfth Company: Capt. John Hatcher; 1st Lt. Edward Van; and 2nd Lt. Samuel Brady" The above record is a militia company that I don't believe would qualify as service in the RW. The question then becomes, is it around this 1791 date that Capt John Hatcher first came into contact with Sam B? Or had they known each other earlier? Keep in mind that John md Mary in 1779. The 1820 WilkinsonCo, GA census shows: Sam Bradey & wife, 45+ (bef 1775), a son 18-26, a dau or dil, 26-45 Wm Bradey & wife, 26-45, 6 kids 0-16 (likely in early-mid 30s, bn mid 1780s?) Sam Brady & wife, 26-45, 1 kid 0-10 (also on Sam's page is JESSE Sanders, 26-45 (our Jesse from the Militia record?) Nel
