Nel & WW, I would surmise, given the fact that Marshall James Hatcher was a slave broker, he was also an Auctioneer which would have earned him the title of "Colonel". That far back it probably was an honorary title. In this day and age, anyone graduating from an Auctioneering School is granted the title of Colonel.
