    3. Nel, Another question re: John Burtons wife & mother of his children. How do you reason that John md 1st Rachel Hutchins, 2nd unknown & mother of children, and 3rd Mary Coxe. With no proof, only by paper trail, I have that John Burton md Mary Coxe approx 1652. She was d/o Wm Coxe & Elizabeth Hutchins. Wm Cox & Isaac Hutchins, Elizabeths brother, purchased land together. John Cox assigned land to John Burton in 1667 in "Longfield". When John Burton sold land in Feb 1683/84 no wife was mentioned to relinquish her dower rights, thus "assumed" Mary Coxe? died prior Feb 1683/84. Thus, I suspect that Mary Coxe was mother of John Burtons children. Also Johns first daughter was named Mary b. abt 1653. John Burton's son Robert Burton had a son Hutchins Burton b. 1694. According to source Hutchins Burton md Susannah Allen. Feedback most certainly welcomed JW Garrett ------------------------------------ > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Mon, 30 Nov 2009 09:33:55 -0700 > Subject: Re: [HATCHER] A change to our file......... > > > HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com > HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm > "One of the tragedies of life is the murder of a beautiful theory by a brutal gang of facts" - La Rochefoucauld > > Good morning, JW! > > John Burton's dau Mary married 1st, John Davis and 2nd, William Glover. But John did have a dau Ann as mentioned in the will of his son, John Jr, dated 1679. All this can be found on the file. My guess is that Ann died unmarried before 1690 when John Sr's will was written. > > The marriage rec for Wm Hatcher states only that he married a dau of John Burton. Seems everyone had assumed she could only be Ann or Rachel, finally settling on Ann because of her release of dower on a Hatcher deed dated 1704. But when a married dau dies without children, as it appears is the case with William's wife, the odds of finding her name in any record is slim. > > John Jr's will, 1679, mentions the 3 children of sister Rachel [no surname] and Sr's will mentions his dau, Rachel BURTON. Her children were illegitimate and it's always been my belief that they had a Hatcher father, producing the Burton line that matches our Hatcher DNA. > > We seem to be on a roll with illegitimate kids lately :-) > > Nel > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

All the Burton "stuff" is eons old and unsourced........so I cheated and removed it :-) I now have only an unnamed wife and those kids who have been ID'd from records on our file. For giggles, I checked WC and never saw so much garbage in my life. He must have been married to half the women in Henrico if you go by some of these files! But I will say one thing about dower releases. The majority seem not to have survived and many have been found randomly in other court records. I would say only that John's wife died before his will was written without putting any date to it. The fact that no release was found in 1684 does not really tell you anything. With literally hundreds of Hatcher [seller, not buyer] deeds on our file, I would guess less than 5% have had a dower release found. Nel
