OK, Nel. What you are saying is that I'm not a HATCHER at all. Will I be asked to unsubscribe from the list? :-) I was aware that the St Peter Parish, New Kent Co, records showed a married in 1709 between Thomas COTTRELL I and a Martha HACHER. I sort of assumed, maybe wrongly, that this was a "typo" which should have read HATCHER. I think this was a fairly logical assumption since Thomas was recorded in Henrico Co in various records. (As I near 75, I've learned not to trust assumptions too much). Here is a deed record, I copied/pasted from Richard Cottrell's website. Does it ring any bells? Is there any info that a Martha HATCHER married Alexander PADASON (var sp)? Charlie Weaver (I guess my visit years ago to look around the area of Varina was a waste of time.) 1748 Henrico Co., VA Deed Book 2 Page 53: Thomas Cottrell of Albemarle Co., for L 30, paid by William North, dec'd; of County and Parish of Henrico in his lifetime, 75 acres in same parish on Deep Run, a branch of Tuckahoe Creek, and is tract where Martha Padason, mother of said Thomas Cottrell now lives, which I bought of Holman Freeman, bounded by Samuel Pinchum and Thomas Alley. North in his will gave said land to his son Abraham North, and it is conveyed to him. Wit: Joseph Freeman, John (I) North, Jameston (J) Pattison; Signed: Thomas Cottrell, Recorded 1st Mon. Dec. 1748.

Don't hit the unsub button just yet :-) I'm working this morning hoping to de-orphan you. Now that the Henrys are sorted and straightened out, their deeds and the witnesses/neighbors take on more importance. I believe Martha, assuming she's a Hatcher, can only be a dau of Henry/Dorothy. Either we have sufficient recs to prove she's NOT a daughter of the other possibles OR we can prove they were residing on the south side of the James before 1709 when Martha married. We cannot account for Henry/Dorothy's whereabouts between 1701-1709. I've searched the entire 1704-5 rent rolls for all counties and he's missing. But he could have been in New KentCo. Unless Martha was an orphan raised by a non-Hatcher family, she had to be living with someone in NKCo. If Henry/Dorothy were there, they would not likely have been found in those parish records because 1) they didn't marry there and 2) I don't believe he and Dorothy had any more kids after her rape in 1701 and 3) they didn't die there. Those are the 3 main events that were recorded in these parish records. I'm now going to work on those deed related names associated with Henry/Dorothy, including the families associated with Tom Cottrell, to see if I can tie them together. Even if I can do this, it will be only circumstantial evidence at best but I'm gonna' give it a shot.......... Martha did marry Alex Pattison after Tom died but no marriage rec has been found. Even so, she would have been married as Martha Cottrell, not Hatcher. Hang in there, Charlie! Don't let go of the rope :-) Nel
