I do know about 8 yrs back... when I was there..that one stone was missing that was there when I was a child. I know that absolutely because there were 2 stones exactly alike, they were lower to the ground...about 6" thick... and those 2 stones were the ones my sister and I used to "sit on". We'd sneak off up to that cemetary... and would sit on those 2 stones... pretending they were "horses" My father used to always watch WAgon Train, and all those cowboy type shows, We re-enacted them the next day. There were more than 2 infants burired there too. We used to enter the cemetary from the "left side"... Now you enter from what we called the back side of it yrs ago. It was on the back side that there were quite a few infant stones. Being a child then, I don't recall exactly how many, but there were at least 7 or 8 of them. I remember my mother telling me that they were stones for babies... and her telling me that back in "those days" alot of babies didn't make it. This would have been around 57-58 or so... Actually by the time I was 5 I was sneaking off to play up there. lol Also many yrs ago, there were a number of wild "lady slippers" that grew wild in that wooded area... There was like a patch of them back just behind where the babies were buried. We stayed out of that spot were the babies were... even as a child...it just didn't seem right... Back then the cemetary was not well kept and we had to crawl up a little hill... thru briars to get into it. I can't even find a hint of a "hill now" Of course when I was small, it probably seemed larger. betty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
