"I found a rec where william hatcher sold land to a joshua van sant in hunterdon co NJ in 1753." Hee-haw!! And then did this Wm move down to LoudounCo?? Is this the Joshua who md Catherine Johnston? Did he sell his land in Kent, MD and move to NJ? Or is he possibly the brother of our Ann VS? Paul or anyone - any thoughts on this Joshua and who he might be?? I have to say, too, that Ray (and his wife) is taking a break from his researching to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this weekend!! But he'll be back next week and I DO think we'll have a new list for him..... Nel

It looks to me like he owned a small amt of land, got married and shortly after, sold his land. Did he and others move to NJ? Looking at his kids' dates, there are several gaps. Did he have another son or two who lived/died in NJ before Wm's 1781 will? Perhaps the father(s) of all those stray NJ Hatchers? And Ed has returned from his NJ research trip and will send me his finds tomorrow or next. He says he may have found more worms :-) Nel --------------------------- 1718 - Wm Hatcher witnesses will of Wm Rakestraw, PhilaCo 1724 - Jeremiah Dungan sells 34A to Joseph Hatcher (Thatcher?) ----------Wm Hatcher appears on 1724 Bucks Tax list (what type of tax?) ----------Joseph Hatcher appears on same list? 1726 - Joseph Hatcher (Thatcher?) sells same 34A to Wm Hatcher. 1727-11-13 - Wm Hatcher md Ann VS in BurlingtonCo, NJ 1728-4-10 - Wm sells 34A to Ruth Croasdale.

And I'm quite sure they've added much more since I last surfed it. Below are the records I found and the names just jump out at you..... Is Wm, s/o John-Dina, our Quaker Wm? Is Joseph, s/o Edmund, the Joseph of the 1726 BucksCo deed? But isn't Nicholas too old to be the bondsman for the Mary Hatcher Sands wedding of 1747? And he appears not to have had a dau Mary. Is Wm above really ours or is he the Wm further below who md Mary c1722? If so, he wasn't in America witnessing a deed in 1718. Have we struck out here? HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Gary, I like your thinking and your theory on Ann's possible connection to Quaker relatives makes sense. What I'm not sure about is a connection to Richard. But I am fairly positive there had to be a "brother" or "cousin" with William who would have been the father of Mary Hatcher Sands. Nicholas may be that person or he may have been Mary's brother. Or Joseph, if he was a Hatcher and not Thatcher, could be that person. I also agree that being a wheelwright does not indicate a man of wealth, further reinforcing my idea that Wm may have been older than believed before he was sufficiently able to support a wife/family. Being much more middle class would also reduce his opportunities for showing up in lots of records, making him a good deal harder to find......... And now I eat my words! The names John and Dina rang a bell and, sure enough, they're on our file with son, William, AND a son, Richard. The problem....no idea how most of these kids became attached but I believe most would have come from Brit Bob many eons ago. I'm guessing I was able to find online the Dorset Parish recs for the baptisms of Wm and sister, Liz, but not the other kids. But tell me what google terms you used to find John and Dina. I'd like to update our file if the info you found is solid. Thanks a bunch! New clues to follow up on.....one of these days! Nel

"Ann HATCHER was listed as a witness TO HER DAUGHTER "Ann HATCHER was listed as a witness TO HER SON Thomas's did not identify their relationship so I'm saying.....how is it known that Ann Hatcher was THE MOTHER? Here is the problem....... InThen in 1773, Ann, the dau of John/Sarah Ingledue, witnessed the wedding of her uncle, Thomas. She would have been about 10 and possibly even a few years older. 1. [HATCHER] Quakers William and Ann
    2. Gary Hatcher
    3. I don't usually make suppositions about genealogy; because, today's supposition might become tomorrow's unproven fact (especially with the internet). These 'facts' also seem to propagate themselves very quickly and become almost impossible to correct. With that be said, here goes: 1. How William and Ann may have become connected to the Quakers? After the death of Ann's parents I believe that she and some of her siblings may have been taken in by her mother's sister Rebecca and her husband Johannes HENDRICKS, who were Quakers. My records were lost due to a computer crash; however, I remember getting an inquiry once from a Hendricks descendent concerning this. This would explain the connection that William and Ann had with the Quakers. 2. The parents of William? There is a record of a William Hacher (sic) s/o John and Dina Hacher baptized in 1700 in the Marnhull, Dorset, England parish records. After 1700 the spelling in the record for John and Dina is changed to Hatcher. I googled John and Dina and found death dates of 1707 for John and Dina, and another of 1720 for John. This seems to be a good possible match for our William, note Williams first born son is named John (possibly after his grandfather) and there is also a son Thomas (possibly after his great grandfather Dorset John's father). 3. William and possibly one sibling (Richard) may have come to the colonies after their parents death as indentures or apprentices (becoming a wheelwright would have required an apprenticeship). Orphaned children were often placed into indenture and/or apprenticeships. That is enough supposition for now and maybe a little more to research. Tks, Gary Hatcher

    1. Re: [HATCHER] A Quaker question..........
    2. I guess it is possible that the younger Ann signed as a witness to both her uncle Thomas and her uncle George (who married in 1778) but I would be curious to see the list of witnesses who signed at these weddings and exactly where they signed the certificate as that sometimes has a bearing on who the witnesses were in relation to the bride and groom--especially in the case of their parents. Also, sometimes the parents are mentioned in the upper part of the certificate also. I don't have copies of these myself. Swathmore has the original Goose Creek records, I think, but will check and see if they are on microfilm in Salt Lake City unless someone else has copies already? These particular marriage records might actually be in the Fairfax MM Records. There was a meeting house at Goose Creek as early as 1749 but I don't know who actually held these early records. Goose Creek became a Preparative Meeting in 1774 and then a Monthly Meeting in 1785. Burnis **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch "Cooking with Tyler Florence" on AOL Food. HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood And I think this hi-lites the importance of seeing the complete "record." If we were to see Ann's name in the middle of her siblings, we could be pretty sure who we're dealing with, or as you said, if she was listed in the parent's spot of honor, we would know this was mama. But in this case, I think I can say with some assurance that my Notes are not correct in flatly stating that the witness Ann Hatcher was the mother in all cases. At the same time, while this is not an earthshaking problem, a remarriage for Wm Sr to a Mary would certainly solve that deed and date problem. Otherwise, it's still hanging out there clouding up the picture. And, also, at the end of this day, I've been unable to find squat on Stephen Sands, Mary and Nick Hatcher :-( Nel
