HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Folks, I am comfortable with the kids I've attached to Tom/Wilm with one exception - Edward of PendletonCo, SC. His attachment has always been weak on evidence but still made a certain amount of sense lacking better records. Putting my concentration on him in the past day or so, checking his records, and looking at the lifestyles of Ed and Tom's much different families, I am now convinced that there is more weight to him not being a son of Tom. We know that he was in PendletonCo in 1800 and may have died pre-1810. At that time this was "Indian country" and the last stronghold of the Cherokee, a bit wilder and less civilized country. We know he had at least 2 sons born before 1800 and one of those sons appear to be Russell, the other is likely Daniel (2 names quite unusual within the larger Hatcher family). Both of these men were found in the 1820 Pendleton census (but neither found in 1810). It is also possible he had a son, Ebenezer, who first pops up in the 1830 ElbertCo, GA census but with one caveat. Ebenezer's DNA results show he is not a blood Hatcher. IF Eben is Ed's son, it could indicate Ed also was not a Hatcher. But Eben could also be the son of one of Ed's 2 daus born pre-1790. Whether any of this thinking holds water may be forever impossible to prove, one way or the other. I will be detaching Ed from Tom/Wilm as soon as possible. Because of a certain entanglement of records between Ed and Wm/Pris, I know I will be left with some puzzlements in Wm/Pris's family based on very unclear Bible entries. But that's another problem...........! Nel

Long Branch flowed into Allen Creek a few miles before Allen Creek flowed into Roanoke River. These references to James and William Sandefur in close proximity to the Bugg family and the Hatcher family caused me to wonder if perhaps Robert Hatcher's wife Anne was a Sandefur and not a Sanders. --------------------------------- Robert Hatcher and Anne Sanders Anne Sanders mother and father were Thomas Sanders and Anne Adams, her grand parents were James Sanders and Sarah Scrimschire : From the Sanders Saga by Catherine S. McConnell - The names of the children of James and Sarah Sanders are listed in the Register of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent county, Va. With the dates of their Baptism, this register is found in the Virginia State Library in Richmond Virginia. JAMES AND SARAH SANDERS OF NEW KENT COUNTY A document, which can be accepted as truly that of the Sanders family of southwestern Virginia, has been laminated for preservation and is in possession of the writer. The entire document is quoted here: A catalogue of the marriage of James Sanders and Sarah Scrimschire, the ages of their children. James Sanders was mar-ried to Sarah Scrinishire September 7th, 1698. Born Thomas Sanders October 16th 1699 John Sanders August 29th 1701 Alice Sanders February 4th 1703 James Sanders February 10th 1706 Hannah Sanders April 5th 1709 Sarah Sanders March 3rd 1713 Stephen Sanders December 11th 1714 Elizabeth Sanders July 5th 1716 James Sanders was the Great Grandfather of William, John, Nancy, Robert and Adams Sanders. Copied this 2nd day of November, 1817 By Adams Sanders. " (P. 197.) Names of these children of James and Sarah Sanders are listed in the Register of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent County, Virginia, with dates of their baptism. This Register, published by the Virginia State Library, Richmond, is one of the rare sources of information about early residents of that county. After extensive searching, Jouet McGavock Boyd (p. xi) made the following statement in correspondence with the writer: "I am convinced that James and Sarah, listed in the St. Peter's Parish Register, are the ancestors of the Sanders family of Wythe County and that they are buried in New Kent County." Sarah's surname is spelled two ways by Adams Sanders in the above quoted document which may not be a grave error. Charles 1vV. Bardsley describes similar names in his English Surnames (p. 220), "SCRIM-SHIRE, SCHRIMSHIRE, SKRYMSHER, SKRIMSHIRE, ETC. SANDERS SAGA No record of Sarah's birth and death has been preserved. James was born in 1650 and died in 1717 as recorded in family papers. No attempt has been made by the writer to search the descendants of other than Thomas Sanders, the oldest child of James and Sarah. The following record is from genealogical data kept by early members of the family. Thomas Sanders, b. 16 Oct. 1699, d. 7 Apr. 1772, m. 16 July 1729 to Anne Adams who d. 18 Mar. 1769. (A note concerning this Anne Adams: Some descendants have said, "She is thought to be a relative of President John Adams" - an extensive search has not revealed any evidence of proof of her ancestry. As will be noticed, the name 'Adams' has been carried in the family for several genera-tions, thus giving honor to Anne, regardless of her lineage.) Thomas and Anne Adams Sanders were parents of fourteen children. 1.James Sanders, b. 16 Aug. 1730. 2.Judah Sanders, b. 14 Apr. 1733. 3.Anne Sanders, b. 22Jan. 1735. - 4.Bettie Sanders, b. 8 Mar. 1736. 5.Mary Sanders, b. 9 June 1738. 6.Adams Sanders, b. 13 Nov. 1740. 7.Thomas Sanders, b. 15 Oct. 1742. 9.Stephen Sanders, b. 10 May 1747, m. HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Jan, "Very unusual first name for a man unless it is in the family." Some of these names become obvious as to their source - a proven mother's maiden name, a famous person (Francis Marion, Nathanial Green). In the case of Sanders scattered here and there thru Maj John's line, it becomes less obvious. And it is only the source of the first occurrence that becomes important. After that it simply becomes a "family name" used by descendants who likely do not even know the original source. That is particularly true in our case when it cannot be proven that Ann's name was Sanders or that this woman was ever in GA or that she can even be connected to John at this point. With John now attached to Tom/Wilm, with deeper digging we might discover that this name came from somewhere in Wilm's family or in honor of a respected neighbor or associate. What I do know is that this name was used widely in GA families. If you go to WC and search for the given name Sanders with a birthplace GA, you will find men with the following surnames born between 1792-1820 named Sanders..... Arnold, Blanchard, Bowden, Burgess, Butler, Clements, Colbert, Creekmore, Davis, Dimond, Favor.......just from a few pages. There are dozens born after 1820 who were probably so named because it's now a "family name." This name in the Hatcher family just isn't unique to us. It would be interesting to know it's source and with it's wide use, I've tried to find some prominent Sanders man as a source and have been unable. I've rec'd the last 2 NJ docs. The first is the Inventory for Wm Hatcher, died 1806, wife Rachel. The 2nd is a 1753 deed in which Wm/Ann of FAIRFAX, VA, sells land in "western NJ" to Joshua Van Sant of MD. This is a 6-page 11x18 deed so will be a bit before I get it transcribed :-) Nel

I'm responding this way because it would appear your server is having a problem just with my server. I will assume you're receiving other non-list msgs OK and this is just a "me" problem. I will try periodically to resend my old msgs until they go thru. Nel
