HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Cuzins, I have a list I pulled off the SC State Archives site that I believe requires a personal visit to the Archives to read microfilm. Here is an example.... Register of Mesne Conveyances L 36143 Newberry County (S.C.). Register of Mesne Conveyances. Abstracts of conveyance books 1785-1805 8.00 volumes L 36001 Newberry County (S.C.). Register of Mesne Conveyances. Conveyance books 1785-1921, 1941 92.00 microfilm reels, 0.01 microfilm reel, and 2.00 volumes Never sure what I'm talking about when I look at this "stuff", but I think the first one requires checking 8 books, no film involved. The 2nd one....hmmm! The 2 volumes may be an index leading to 1 of the 92 films? Do we have anyone with reasonable access to the Archives and who is willing to dig thru a bunch of books and films? Expenses will be paid by the Assn. The Archives is located in Columbia. Please let me know if you're interested. Nel
HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood You are correct, Winnette, about those county lines. But in this case we have: Twiggs formed from Wilkinson in 1809. Houston (west of Twiggs) formed from Creek Indian land in 1821. Bibb and Crawford formed from Houston in 1822. This places Bibb west of Twiggs which was west of Wilkinson and all established before our timeline. See a great site at http://www.familyhistory101.com/maps/ga_cf.html to follow the county formations. From this site, use the Home link to access formation maps for all the states. Wunnerful site that I use constantly. Nel
HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Well now....since Winnette has dropped a can of worms on our list, I might as well expand on the situation we have in not only TwiggsCo but adjoining BibbCo, GA. Wm of the 1830 census is only a small part of the overall problem that covers a time frame between 1820-1840 and may even spill into WilkinsonCo that also adjoins Twiggs on the other side. This Wm is not firmly ID'd at this time but it appears most likely he is Wm/Martha Thompson, believed to be son of Wm/Pris of ElbertCo. Here is a timeline for these counties....... 1820 - Wm/Pris (bro of Maj John) is in WilkinsonCo. 1820 - James/Whitehead, son of Wm/Pris, in the Wilkinson census living near an unknown William Hatcher. This Wm is living on land won by James/Tate, another son of Wm/Pris, in the 1805 lottery. How did it come into possession of this unk William? Wm/Pris had a son, Wm/Martha Thompson, of the same age but this census does not match the kids they apparently had. 1823 - Henry/Bethia, son of Maj John, dies in BibbCo. His estate sale is held at Vincent Tharp's home in Twiggs. Cecil used a number of records to arrive at the very acceptable conclusion that Henry was John's son but considering the presence of Tom/Martha in Twiggs and BibbCo must raise some nigglies. 1824 - Wm Jr purchases a slave in BibbCo. WHO IS WM SR who would be in BibbCo? 1825 - Tom/Martha, son of Tom/Wilmoth, registers for the 1827 lottery in TwiggsCo. 1825 - A record is found for Dempsey Hatcher, son of Tom/Martha, ID'ing him as a Lieutenant living in TwiggsCo and having served 1824-25 and 1828-29. 1826 - Dempsey attends the estate sale of John Davis in BibbCo along with Elizabeth Hatcher Tharp. (I now believe she is Dempsey's sister). In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of back and forth movement and interactions between people in Bibb and TwiggsCo. 1826 - Tom/Martha dies in Twiggs. Martha is named administrator. 1830 - Wm/Martha Thompson appears in the Twiggs census with those 43 slaves. 1830 - Martha, widow of Tom, now appears living in BibbCo. Tom was a winner in the 1827 lottery and Hamilton Hatcher of LeeCo sold this land sometime in the 1840s. Did he receive it as an heir and son of Tom? Is he really a son of Tom or did he purchase it from one of Tom's sons? Who paid the taxes and who was living on this property for about 15 years before it was sold? 1830 - James/Whitehead, son of Wm/Pris, now living next to the unk William in Wilkinson. If this Wm is James' brother who md Martha Thompson, was he caught in both the Twiggs and Wilkinson census? But that still doesn't explain the problem with their kids in these censi. Wm has no wife in the 1830 Wilkinson but has slaves in both the 1820-30. If he was working as overseer in TwiggsCo in 1830 but owned property and slaves in Wilkinson, who was managing this property while he was in Twiggs? 1832 - John, son of Tom/Martha, applies for admin of Tom's estate implying mother, Martha, has died. 1834 - John murdered in Twiggs. Did he complete the admin of the estate before he died? (see what you started, Winnette? :-) 1840 - Letty Hatcher/Hacker is in the Twiggs census with several of the same neighbors as Wm had in 1830. She has NO slaves. Who is this Letty? I don't think the families of either Maj John, Wm/Pris or Tom/Martha are yet set in stone and I suspect there may be one or more errors with a few kids possibly attached to the wrong parents. And dat's da' way this boat floats.......... Nel

Thanks for this, Nel. Valuable information. There is a question I have always had about a ggg Uncle who was single and living in Mississippi with 48 slaves...1860 census. Living with him were a possible nephew and another man. The other man was listed as the "overseer." So I am wondering now if the uncle might have been the "farm manager," though the census record doesn't actually say that. Seems to make sense since we have never been able to figure out where he would have gotten the money to buy that many slaves. Thanks again for passing this along. Note particularly the 3rd paragraph. "Sir: The 'act to provide for taking the fifth census or enumeration of the inhabitants of the United States,' copies of which are herewith transmitted, prescribes that this enumeration shall be taken under the direction of the Secretary of State, and according to such instructions as he shall give, pursuant to the act. "[Enclosure] No. 3" "Interrogatories to be put by the assistants of the mashals [sic], in taking the fifth census or emumeration [sic] of the inhabitants of the United States. "Who was on the first day of June, 1830, the head, (master, mistress, steward, overseer, or other principal person, as the case may be,) of this family? Exec. [?] Doc. No. 4, 22nd Cong., 1st Sess. (1830). ---------------- Do I assume your uncle was listed as a "farmer"? And did you check the 1850-60 Slave Schedule to see if he was listed? Nel
HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Folks, I have been puzzled by an 1830 TwiggsCo, GA census for some time that shows: 1830 TwiggsCo, GA census, Roll M19-21, p 71. William Hatcher, 2M 0-5, 1M 5-10, 1M 10-15, 1M 20-30, 1F 5-10, 1F 30-40, 43 slaves. I decided to post the following msg to the LVA email list: "I have been working on a particular research problem for a while that involves an 1830 census showing William Hatcher, 20-30 (probably closer to 30 based on kid's ages) and recorded with 43 slaves. This is very perplexing to me since, if he is who I believe he is, it raises the question - where/how did he come into possession of so many slaves at such a relatively young age? Now I am wondering if he actually owned these slaves. My question is this - could he have been an overseer living on land he did not own but owned by an absentee land/slave owner? Would ownership of the land have been a concern to the census taker whose only responsibility was to record all persons living on that particular property?" -------------------------- The response from Elizabeth Shown Mills (see her credentials at the bottom) is as follows: Nel, you are squarely on target in questioning the incongruity between this man's age and the number of slaves attributed to him. Your proposed interpretation is a sound one, IMO. The enumerators were to record the head of the household and the occupants of that household--a census definition that included slaves. Enumerators were not instructed to ask: "Who is the titular owner of these people?" From the East Coast to Texas, I've seen many examples of slaves held by absentee landowners being attributed to the household of the overseer or farm manager--all cases in which a reconstruction of the man's life provided direct evidence to support this interpretation of the census. Elizabeth --------------------------------------------------------------- Elizabeth Shown Mills, CG, CGL, FASG Advanced Research Methodology & Evidence Analysis Samford University Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research ============= So it is not likely this Wm Hatcher owned those slaves and that makes sense in light of other information I have that I believe relates to this man. Perhaps none of you have encountered this situation but perhaps some of you have made the same wrong assumption I initially made - that the HOH was the slave owner. But do keep this in mind the next time you check out whether someone does or does not "own" slaves in a census. Cheers, Nel
