HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood BlackSheep, Since you're on Digest mode, I'm also sending this to you separately. We need a server with better supprt service and an understanding of the TNG software. We will be going with SimplyHosting run by a guy who is a TNG user. They even offer to install your TNG software - a real blessing for this techie idiot. DH tells me we are exceeding our RAM allotment. They don't tell me what that means or what might cause it to be exceeded. Is it the constant error msgs filling the error log? Too many people accessing the site? Is it a slow thing that has just built up over the last year? I have no clue and they have not been helpful with explaining what might be the cause. No server is a problem for all customers and I'm sure DH has many happy customers. But they do NOT do well with TNG users, particularly those like me with a very large site. I can tell you the error log msgs are not encouraging. For those of you who can read this gobblygook, this is currently the last msg in the log: [Sun Nov 09 09:34:50 2008] [error] [client 82.194.85.198] ModSecurity: Access denied with code 503 (phase 2). Multiply this one by many pages. But note the spelling in the two refs. I don't know what .phtml is. I don't know why this error is being produced. I will note that the background image that was coming up as a "File does not exist" and that had been corrected by me last nite is no longer producing error msgs. There seems to be some sort of delay since they continued to appear for a few hours after I had corrected it. You wrote: "I got a 500 error which is an internal server error and usually means that there is a configuration problem within the program itself and not the servers." You need to explain your definition of "configuration." I define that as relating to a change I personally made to one program or another within the TNG software. If that's what you mean, I have made NO changes since 11/1 when Roy died. I added his b/d dates under his pic on the home page. That, IMO, could not possibly have caused me to go down last Monday which (coincidently?) is the same time DH reported an "issue" with my server. If it is possible that a "configuration" could have been set up wrongly a year ago at our initial upload and not cause problems until a year later, you may be right. But finding that problem is "the problem." I and others often and sporadically get the 500 ISE error just trying to access the site when the only "changes" I've made is to one of our dbase files (changing/adding dates/places, etc). If routine maintenance on our dbases can cause these ISE errors, we are in DEEP doo-doo :-) Nel

    3. HATCHER website: http://hatcherfamilyassn.com HALL DNA project: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hall/HDNAtest.htm "If you can't stand the skeletons, stay out of the closet" - Val D Greenwood Folks, Last nite I went thru every program in the TNG system looking for potential problem coding. I found a number of things that either could or should cause problems. Each time I made a correction, I felt it should have some impact on the site. Nothing worked. Questionalbe code was gone and still the search won't work. I frankly do not understand why. I found some coding referencing a background image file that the site doesn't use and was never uploaded. It is not even stored anywhere on my computer. It was also in an area that didn't make any sense to me. But I removed it. Yet my error log continues to show constant references to this file as "file not found." I still have not found any other program that also reffed this bad image. Our server techs have said we're exceeding our RAM allotment which, in effect, kills our site. I do not know why and I do not know how to stop it. Our site went down at 7:30 pm Monday 11/4. I submitted a trouble ticket to DH (our server). At 2am Tues DH sent a generic msg that my server had some "issues" but they were resolved. In discussing my particular issue, they claimed there was no problem with my server, so not their problem. During this past week, they also stated that our server was restarted twice, once on the 5th, once on the 6th. They have been less than helpful and they do not work on weekends. They answer trouble tickets once a day. If you respond to their answer, you get a different tech who treats your response as a new issue and gives totally useless answers. And on it goes. They do not seem to look at the total picture. I do not believe AOL (or any other browser) has anything to do with this. I suspect that AOL simply ignores something that other servers consider a critical error. Greg, DH maintains dozens of servers and their status page is a constant stream of server problems on a daily basis. The server in trouble today is not ours. And I would be less than confident in uploading the entire site again. There simply is no guarantee that would fix a thing. What I can say on a positive note is that I have managed to download every important element of our site including Wm's file. It took me 4 attempts to successfully download a ged for Wm. I have no ideas left. I do not know how to get our site running. I do not know what to fix and I am very sorry. Nel
