    3. Wednesday, July 23, 1997 The Halifax Herald Limited Harvey, M. Wilfred Harvey, M. Wilfred - 79, Middleton, died July 22, 1997, in the veterans unit of Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Grand Falls, Nfld., on August 10, 1917, he was a son of the late Daniel and Ella (Butt) Harvey. M.W. Harvey, known as Harve to his friends in Middleton, began his musical career in Grand Falls where his father was band master of the Salvation Army Band. At age 17, he formed and directed the Boy Scouts Band in Newfoundland. He served with the RCAF from 1940-1945, attaining the rank of flight lieutenant and playing with Trenton Air Force Band. After a posting in Greenwood and residing in Middleton, he joined and, in 1949, became band master of Middleton Concert Band. From 1953-1965, he was director of music for the West Nova Scotia Regiment, achieving the rank of captain. During this time, he was also director of 517 Air Cadet Squadron Band of Middleton Regional High School. His career with the Middleton Regional High School began in 1955 when he started the instrumental music program on a part-time basis while working with the Department of Highways. Retiring from the Department of Highways in 1967, he became a full-time staff member of Middleton Regional High School. In addition to developing a quality concert band program, he also directed a choral, string and recorder group. During his tenure as school band director, he took the band on many trips across Canada, the United States and Europe. Two significant trips were the International Youth Band Festival in Harrogate, England, in 1972, and the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, in 1977. At the Vienna festival, the band was presented with the prize of the City of Vienna, winning first place in this international competition. He retired as music Director for Middleton Regional High School in 1978. He then started an orff band for senior citizens which continued until his ill health. He held several important musical posts, director of the Canadian Band Masters Association, president of NSMEA, director of Nova Scotia Summer Schools of Music and director of Instrumental Summer Camps at Acadia University. He was awarded the Jewel and the Jubilate Award of Merit from the Canadian Music Educators Association. He was a member of West Novies Male Quartet; past president of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 1; member of Annapolis Valley Amateur Radio Club (call VEIAAQ); Middleton Rotary Club; board of management of Annapolis Valley Museum, and an elder and choir member of St. John's United Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty (Atkinson) (Campbell); son, Bruce and daughter-in-law Nan; daughter, Lynn and son-in-law Carm Cleveland; stepson, Brian Campbell and wife Peggy; stepdaughter, Carolyn Campbell, Wolfville; stepdaughter, Wendy Baker and son-in-law Alan, Middleton; brother, Charles and wife Rosa, Middleton; sister, Gail, California; grandchildren, Michael and Lisa Harvey, Truro; Amanda, Andrew and Amy Cleveland, Kingston; Stewart and Corey Campbell, New Minas; Nathanael, Joshua, Jordan and Elizabeth Baker, Middleton. McLEOD (Fraser) (Wagner), Bertha S. - 93, Queens Manor, Liverpool, formerly of Port Mouton, Queens Co., died August 16, 1997, in the manor. Born in Port Mouton, she was a daughter of the late James Harvey and Lena (DeMone) Wagner. Surviving are daughter, Virginia (Mrs. Robert Nuttall), Winchester, Mass.; son, Donald, Chelmsford, Mass.; sister, Mrs. Bessie Doherty, Sommerville, Mass.; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon Sterling; second husband, Russell McLeod; daughter, Jean R. (Fraser) Silva; two infant brothers. Born in Boston, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Wilhelmina (Smith) ROBINSON. Babe was a very active member of the United Church and the United Church Women; was noble grand of Leila Rebekah Lodge; member of the hospital auxiliary, and honorary member of Windsor Curling Club. Surviving are daughters, Barbara (Mrs. David Stirling), Canard; Mary (Mrs. George Moore), Dartmouth; son, Charles and wife Marsha, Bridgewater; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell; sisters, Madelyn (Haley), Gertrude (Harvey). Cremation has taken place. No visitation. Born in Harbourville, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Alice (Hallamore) CAHILL. She was once a member of Harbourville United Church and later became a member of Burlington United Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and served a number of years as the church treasurer and as Sunday school superintendent. She also had served for a number of years as secretary-treasurer of Baptist Services held in Garland. She was also secretary-treasurer of Garland School Board for nearly 30 years. She had been employed by a doctor for a time in Boston, teaching school in Harbourville and Lake Paul and later worked at White's Nursing Home in Welsford. She and her late husband owned and operated a farm in Garland for many years. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Frederick Ernest and Mabel (Reeves) Wade. Together with his brother Bev, they took over the operation of the family business, F.E. Wade Ltd. He formed his own business and was president of Wade Enterprises, which operated several food stores throughout the Annapolis Valley. An avid horseman, he was a founding member of Canadian Morgan Horse Club and was a devoted and supportive member. He was also a founding member of Equine Foundation for Veterinary Research. He was a warden of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, for many years, and was a member of the board of directors of St. Anne's Camp, Gibsons Lake, Annapolis Co. Surviving are his wife, the former Donalda Harvey; daughters, Leslie (Mrs. David Wade-Fuller), Katherine (Mrs. Robin Marshall), Megan (Mrs. Grant Wade-Cadeau), Coldbrook; sons, Darrell, Greenwood; Frederick, Grand Pr*; sisters, Gladys (Mrs. Donald MacRae), Halifax; Betty (Mrs. Freeman Pettit), Kentville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
