RootsWeb.com will continue to be free to all users and will maintain its own unique URL at http://www.rootsweb.com. "This is truly a winning combination for both organizations and for the millions of users who make up our audiences," said Greg Ballard, CEO of MyFamily.com, Inc. The union will provide RootsWeb.com with the financial backing to expand and the business structure needed to focus on preserving, sharing, and exchanging family history records. As part of the MyFamily.com network of sites, the RootsWeb.com site will be able continue its tradition of free access to information with additional technology tools, increased family research content, and a greater range of genealogical resources. "RootsWeb.com fits well with the MyFamily.com vision of creating the largest and most active online resource for families and family history research," said Dr. Brian Leverich, founder of RootsWeb.com. "This agreement will expand the number of RootsWeb.com users and content contributors. More than half of the data is freely accessible to all Web users. Ancestry.com also hosts, free of charge, the Ancestry World Tree and Online Family Tree software, which allow users to connect and collaborate with other researchers who are working on the same lines. Ancestry.com users retain ownership of their data, and the company pledges never to charge for access to that data or to publish it. For those who prefer to keep their information a little closer to home, sister site MyFamily.com allows users to create free, private sites that can be used to post family history data, share news and photos with family, chat online, and much more. RootsWeb.com is a valuable resource for family historians, with interactive guides, discussion lists, and numerous tools for tracing one's ancestry; it hosts more than 17,000 independently authored Web sites and about 19,000 mailing lists. 1. [HARVEY-L] Memorial Day
    2. Ernest Alf
    3. This message may not directly relate to genealogy but, we have all had family members for which this is applicable. By Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, May 23, 2000 -- The British called it "The Great Silence," as if there had never been a moment's silence in the world before. The Great Silence marked the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 -- the moment marking the armistice ending the fighting during World War I. All over Great Britain, people stopped where they were and reflected on the sacrifice of a generation in the trenches of the Great War. The Great Silence continues in England, and now something comparable will happen in the United States. "We want to put memorial back in Memorial Day," said Carmella LaSpada, event coordinator for the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance calls for all Americans to stop at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day -- wherever they are -- and take one minute to think of the Americans who died to ensure freedom around the world. LaSpada said the White House is asking radio stations to play "Taps" during the Moment. "We selected 3 p.m. because that is the time of the day that the majority of Americans are out enjoying the freedom for which these people died," she said. She said she hopes the moment becomes a new American tradition. DoD officials encourage service members to participate. "At Army posts, on ships at sea, on Air Force bases -- wherever people may be at that time -- they should participate in the moment," she said. www.whitehouse.gov/remembrance And folks you might also consider making a contribution to the WW II Memorial Campaign. Check it out at: www.wwiimemorial.com This day of all days it seems appropriate that we recognize what our fathers, grandfathers, brothers and friends did for us in the 1940s! Ernie Alf Boerne, TX

    1. [HARVEY-L] Joel A HARVEY b. 1838 Herkimer, Herkimer Co., NY; son of Ira K HARVEY
    2. William L Harvey
    3. While searching for my "own" Joel Harvey b. 1779 in Westminster, Worcester Co., MA, I have managed to gather enough information about this fellow to present on-line with the hope that we can place him in one of our HARVEY lines. Here is what I have found thus far : Joel A. HARVEY b. 1838 in prob. Herkimer Co., NY. The birth year of 1838 is supported by Joel's biography as found in Memorial & Biographical History of Northern California - 1891 [I will post this biography when the Rootsweb system is accessible again ] and by the 1850 Federal Census which lists Joel's parents and siblings as follows : (LDS Film # 0017089 for 1850 Census - Town of Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York; Page 6/33 Dwell/Family = 214/223) Ira Harvey age 45 Male Farmer $6000 real estate value b. New York Malincia? Harvey age 41 Female b. New York Hellen Harvey age 19 Female b. New York Amanda Harvey age 17 Female b. New York Joel Harvey age 12 Male b. New York Norman? Harvey age 6 Male b. New York Gasary? Harvey age 2 Male b. New York Polly Harvey age 77 Female b. New York (ironically, a majority of the 1850 census information found on the film was beautifully clear with precise penmanship except for the work of the enumerator who did this portion - his spelling and penmanship were close to unreadable for some names - hopefully they will provide some clues for the correct people/spellings) 1860 Census HARVEY, Joel UT , Carson Co. , Carson Valley Pg 171 [before Nevada state established] 1870 Census HARVEY, J. A. CA , Solano Co. , Vallejo Pg 78 (probably will be found in 1880 and 1890 records as well --- since Joel A. did not show up in the California Death Index which began in July?, 1905 I believe he had died before then.) Highlights of the above mentioned biography are as follows : Joel A. HARVEY born in Herkimer County NY in 1838, came to CA overland in 1859. He lived in Placerville [El Dorado Co.,] and Vallejo [Solano Co.] Married Almeda L. HUBBARD in 1862 in CA. She was a native of Canada and daughter of Tily and Hulda (PARISH) HUBBARD of VT and NY who had left Michigan in 1849 for CA. Joel and Almeda had six children: Joel H., Amanda L. (Mrs. T. M. DOYLE), May A., Inez A., Blanch(e) L. and Maud F. They lived in Vallejo where Joel was elected County Clerk for Solano County and alternatively practiced law. He lived a quite interesting and diverse life, all in all. Joel H. HARVEY, son of Joel A. and Almeda, was found listed in the Calif. Death Index as being age 53 when he died April 17, 1918 which would place his birth year as about 1865. He was Deputy County Clerk for Solano County ca. 1891. I am hoping this will be enough information to begin adding Joel and his folks into one of the William b. 1614 or Thomas b. 1617 HARVEY lines of ENG >MA>NY. Let me hear from you!
