    1. [HARVEY-L] Letter about: Sir John Harvey, Governor of Va in 1630.
    2. Harvey Clan, I received the following letter from a Virginia CAPPS cousin and thought that you HARVEY cousins may find a connection. Read on to see if this is your "Sir John Harvey, Governor of Va in 1630". Sound like my ancestor Wm CAPPS caused problems for your ancestor Sir John HARVEY. May I apologize for him!!! ACPeeples >>>Went to a book sale here yesterday for short time at the Mary Ball Libreay and museum about 7 miles from our home. Mary Ball was George Washington's wife and was from our area. You are never sure what they will be selling but we decided to go and glad we did. They had lots of history books all at $3 for hardbound. One book Betty picked up and bought was "Founding the American Colonies 1583-1660" by John E. Pomfret. When we got home I was looking through it and on page 51 is a statement about William Capps. They are talking about Sir John Harvey, Governor of Va in 1630 etc. It goes on to say,"No small part of Harvey's trouble was caused by a man named William Capps. This eccentric former burgess returned from a visit to England armed with a letter signed by the king, which directed the governor and his council to develop new industries and to make use of Capp's skill as a consultant while so doing. The netted governor reported back to London that Virginia possessed the initiative to undertake production of new commodities but that it lacked the means. A meeting of elected representatives of the settlers supported Harvey by addressing a report to the king asserting that production of new staples could not be undertaken without proper equipment. The report also stated that great harm had been done to the colony by the rumor that tobacco would shortly be monopolized in England." This was footnoted by: Richard Lee Morton, "Colonial Virginia ( 2 vols., Chapel Hill, NC 1960), I, 117. I thought it was interesting that: 1. the author called William eccentric. Never heard that before 2. The footnote. Next time I get to Lib of Va will try to see if there is any more, but know that we can also get the book through the innerlibrary loan service. Anyway though you might be interested. S .>>>>>>>
