    3. Randy and John According to my notes, 1738, 2, 1, John Harvey of KENNETT MM, PA requested a certificate (rqct) to Hopewell Meeting (VA). I have never been able to find a Hopewell Meeting record that says where he went from there or a Kennett Meeting record that showed him as a member. The above was from the VA vol of Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia. I have forwarded this as well to the Quaker-Roots folks. Perhaps someone there has other Hopewell or Kennett Meeting records and can give us a hand with our John Harvey and his parentage. 1. Web Archives, Lists & Copyright Considerations
    2. Ruth Davison
    3. Hi, The HARVEY List Archives should soon be on the web at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/HARVEY-L/ There is NO password. I only had one person on one of my lists say they wanted a password so a clear majority for web archives with no password. At this point if we wanted a password the option was not to archive on the web. The list is still a closed list, with has saved you a bit of spam, as it only comes to me and not the list. Keeping in mind the archives are on the web I thought the following post from Brian would be of interest to you. Ruth Daivson --- <ducking and running for cover> RootsWeb has worked very hard to avoid a lot of formalities. The current AUP only has three requirements for the users of free facilities here: o No copyrighted material, save by permission. (Fair Use is obviously OK, though.) o No GEDCOMs in free Web space. (Obviously doesn't apply to lists.) o No commercial activities. But mainly, the acceptable use policy is Just Use Common Sense. Take the copyright issue. For heaven's sake don't ask RootsWeb for talmudic dispensations on the fine points of what is and isn't OK: just use common sense. If folks quote short passages and acknowledge the sources, that's almost surely Fair Use. If someone decides to post a chapter out of one book every day until they post the whole book front to back, that's surely not OK. But RootsWeb doesn't expect listowners to be lawyers with expertise in intellectual property law and to get every nit and nat right; we just want you to accept responsibility for helping us avoid the more egregious situations where we have to waste a day or two's time smoothing things over with a wronged author. Just use common sense. Thanks for your help, B. -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. Milton7 thru Jesse9, my father, were all born in IN. My father moved to CA in 1938 when I was 4 years old. My grandfather Austice Mahlon HARVEY married Rosa BREWER daughter of Mahlon BREWER and Winnifer Olivette FREEMAN on August 20, 1896 in Grant Co, IN. I don't know much about the BREWER line. Dave Distler has listed many of the Ohio HARVEYs that I am related to in the database at Ohio River Valley Families http://www.tbox.com/orvf/ The database has both HARVEYs and BREWERs. However, I didn't find James G or Louisa HARVEY or Jacob BREWER. If you find a connection to any of the HARVEYs there, we are probably related. If so, let me know. 1. Web Archives

    3. Quoted from a RESEARCH-HOWTO list posting on Thursaday 13 Nov 1997 Now, to clear up some confusion, Archives are nothing but permanently stored files containing ALL the past posts to the Lists at RootsWeb. For instance, if you subscribe to SURNAME-QUERY, every message you have sent to that List will be in the Archives for THAT List. Every message sent by anyone to that List will be in the Archives. These Archives have already been available for some time to anyone who knew how to send the appropriate email messages containing "X-commands". By placing them on RootsWeb web site, you no longer have to try to remember all those arcane commands, how to format them, etc. Once the Archives pages are active at RootsWeb, all you have to do is log on to the appropriate URL, navigate to the appropriate List's pages and search to your heart's content. The Archives will eventually contain all the messages posted to the Lists, plus all those posted to the same Lists when they were at MAISER. There will be NO usernames and NO passwords !!!!! Anyone can log on and browse through the files. If that scares you, then please read on. In the first place, each person who sends email to a public forum, such as the Lists at RootsWeb, should be aware that, with a few exceptions, as may subscribe to the Lists and receive all the email posted there. So, if you sent something in the past that you are afraid will show up in the permanent Archives, well.......you are already too late. Your email has already been read by everyone who subscribes/subscribed to a particular List. As to those posts being in the Archives, why worry now? Next, some "worry-warts" whine that the genealogical data they post to the Lists will be available to anyone to copy and publish and get rich. Ha Ha! If these nefarious thieves wanted your genealogical data, they could have already copied it by reading your email to the Lists. Now, it may seem that once it is all together in one place with easy access, some data thieves may now find it profitable to log on and copy material, and put it on CD and get rich. Let me ask each of you a question. If you don't want other researchers to see your research, why did you post it to the Lists in the first place? If you wanted it to remain private and not be disseminated, you've already goofed. Folks, once you send it via email, the whole world has access to it. To finalize -- from here forward, if you have something you don't want others to see and be able to copy for further dissemination, DON'T send it to a List !!! If you have sent something in the past that you now decide you don't want to be open to the public, sorry but it's too late. Messages already sent to a List are going to show up in the Archives. There is nothing you or I can do about it. BE WARNED !!!!! If you don't want your email to a List Archived don't send it in the first place. For some of you SURNAME-QUERY users, you CANNOT go to the Archives for that List and expect to find myriads of messages on EVERY surname. ONLY those messages sent to SURNAME-QUERY will be in the Archives. If you want to do a thorough search of the Archives for specific surnames, start with SURNAME-QUERY, then do a search of the List for that specific surname, such as SMITH-L, BROYLES-L, JONES-L, etc. This matter is NOT open to vote or discussion. There will be no usernames or passwords required to access the Archives, starting on December 1st. Until that time, the Archives will not be available...... ........ ------ Ruth (Schauer) Davison [email protected] RR1 Box 2088, Clearwater, BC Canada V0E 1N0 Please help support Internet Genealogy. 2. John Harvey
    3. Hi all, I believe, in the best of all worlds, the ideal would be to provide immediate access to the widest possible audience. However, SPAM and other privacy risks *seem* to outweigh the possible advantages of uncontrolled access. Also, I am a harvey-l subscriber, so access to these archives is not an issue for me. But, what if I want to research my BREWER roots? Do I subscribe to brewer-l, lurk, access the archives, then unsubscribe? Why couldn't a spammer do the same thing? What bona fides should be required to join a mailing list? More importantly, what if one of my 4th or 5th Harvey cousins wants to find out more about his lineage? There are ways of dealing with SPAM. For example, Phil Agre, [email protected], http://communication.ucsd.edu/pagre/, in an article entitled *How to Complain About Spam, or, Put a Spammer in the Slammer* suggests several ways of dealing with SPAM thru the FTC, Post Office, police, FBI, legislators, ISP's, etc. He concludes by saying <<If we despair about spam then the spammers win. Many thousands of people are working against spam, each in their own way. If you simply pick the one method that you find most convenient then you can be confident that these antisocial people will eventually be compelled to find better ways of making a living.>> The rule should be that if the mailing list is public, i.e. a simple subscribe message gets you on the list, then the archives should be public. Conversely, if the archives should be private, then the subscription process must be controlled. This would be a burden on someone. I believe the point of the harvey-l discussion list and the possible archives should be to make the information available to the greatest number of people who are interested in their Harvey lineage. Also, there are other avenues for dealing with SPAM, etc. Therefore, my bottom line is that the advantages of a public discussion coupled with public archives outweigh the disadvantages of keeping them private. According to Surveyor's Book 1 for Albemarle County 400 acres of land was surveyed for him in 1745 along Mountain Creek and Glover's Road. Does anyone know where these were (are)? I also show a Thomas Harvey marrying Betsey Seay on October 10, 1795. I assume this is not the same Thomas Harvey, but possibly a son. Does anyone know anything about these Harvey's, where they live, where they were from, children, etc.? I also noted on the page of surveys that 4 of the 5 recorded showed 400 acres plots, with the acreage in a symmetrical rectangle. Was there something special about 400 acres in these surveys?
