"Bill", as he was known by his friends and family, was born on June 6, 1923 on a farm near Blue Mound, Illinois to John and Beulah Hartwig. He was a graduate of Blackburn College and completed his graduate work in Speech and Hearing at Central Institute for the Deaf at Washington University in St. Louis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served as a pharmacist mate. In 1951, Bill married Elizabeth Ann Baize. Together they made their home in Worthington, Ohio where they raised three daughters. Bill worked as an audiologist for the Ohio School for the Deaf and as an educational consultant for the Division of Special Education for the State of Ohio. Bill loved the beauty of nature, music, and his family. He will be remembered as a man of immense kindness, thoughtfulness, and humility. He was, in all ways, a peaceful, gentle man. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beulah Hartwig; his brother, Dean Hartwig; and his sister, Mary Sexson. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, who resides in Bristol Village in Waverly, Ohio; three daughters, Mary Prentis of Raleigh, NC, Susan Lynn of Columbus, Ohio, and Lesa Anne of West Chester, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren also survive, Carly Prentis Jones and Elisabeth Penn Jones at Raleigh, NC and Maxwell Hartwig Williams and Dashiell Baize Williams of West Chester, Pennsylvania; as well as his nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Bristol Village Foundation, 660 E. Fifth St., Waverly, Ohio 45690.
