Who were the Hartwig's in Chicago? I have a William, Arthur, Alexander and Otto. I know I am missing two and have no idea who they are. They came here about 1882.

Names: John Christian Jacob Hartwick Theodore Hartwig Paul Tharer Bertha Tharer Matthilde Ditzenherger Miirria Ditzenherger Terdiuard Hartwick of Minnesota The name is spelled Hartwick / Hartwig in several parts of the will. The will is a sealed copy! The will is hand written and hard to read so if any family member would like a copy to try and read I will send at no charge! Earle Evernham

My guess is Montana or Colorado as another side of the family went from Baltimore-Nebraska-Chicago-Montana & Colorado.

She married George KINZEL Oct 1910 in Russia. Her father was Peter HARTWIG. Amelia and George had 11 children: Henry, John, George Jr., Walter, Minnie, Molly, Bertha, Sarah, Juanita, Helen and Emma. Photo was taken in about 1865-1870, in Lockport (Niagara Co.) NY and William looks to be about age 18-20. I found William Hartwig in the 1900 census for Niagara Falls (Miagara Co.) NY. His DOB is listed as Jul 1847, and he was age 52, born in Germany. Wife, Minnie, was age 43, and living with them were children, AND his mother Wilhelmina, age 85, with DOB May 1815 Germany. Immigration data on that census shows that mother and son arrived in 1854. Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to William Hartwig.

There was Maria Dorothea Hartwig who married Johann Friederich Timm, Christian Hartwig who was probably Maria Dorothea's father, Johann Carl Christian born in 1827 and married in 1857. Does anyone have any further connections to these people?

I have no idea who the three missing siblings are but could have been, and probably were, born in Germany. That doesn't mean there is not a link but I am unaware of those you mention.

    3. I am trying to find out the relationship of some Hartwigs to my family. I found a few pictures in our family photo album - pics taken end of 1800's and early 1900's. A John C. Hartwig 1858 - 1921 and his wife Rachel 1860 - 1950. John C. Hartwig is in a photo with the Smith boys: Henry, Siebert, John, and William. Their parents were Seibert Smith and Anna Catherine Miller. I don't know how Mr. Hartwig is related but it seems strange that he would have a picture taken with the four Smith boys if he is not related. There is also in the album, several pictures of a George Webster and his wife Emma Hartwig, and their children, John, Howard, and Anna Webster. There is also a Siebert Hartwig 1869-1943 who was married to an Ella Ports 1877 - 1923 their daughter named Edith and a son named Robert L. Hartwig. Siebert or Sybert seems to be a recurring name here. These folks lived in Whiteside County and are buried at the Old Brick Church cemetary outside of Polo, IL, a little over 100 miles due west of Chicago. Perhaps Anna Catherine Miller's mother was a Hartwig but I have found nothing to back that up. Anna Catherine's parents were James and Anne Miller. She had a sister Mary and a brother John. Perhaps Siebert Smith's mother was a Hartwig. His father was Casper Smith 1798 - 1880 but his mother is not buried in the cemetary and I don't know her name. Do any of these names mentioned show up in any one else's research for Hartwigs in IL at the turn of the century? Judi Farster
