Author: tonyandjane2000 Surnames: Hartwig Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hartwig/64.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think the Hartwig in my tree is probably not connected. My grandfather Alfred Hayman Hartwig was born in Manchester in 1860, went to Manchester Grammar School and worked for Jaffe and Co. where he was a director. In 1915 the surname was changed to Russell, his wife's maiden name, presumably because of anti-German feeling in the uk then. He retired to Llandudno and lived there until his death in 1944. My grandmother, Maude Hepburn Russell, died there in 1942. His father was John David Hartwig and I havew a copy of the certificate of his marriage to Emily Makinson in the 1850s. JDH's father on the certificate is given as Joseph von der Lahr, and certain press cuttings refer to Alfred as Alfred Hartwig von der Lahr. Frankfurt seems to be the town of origin, but I've had no luck in tracing them there. Regards - Tony Russell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: WendyCook27 Surnames: Hartwig Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hartwig/143/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for the descendants of a Swedish family, Carl and Karen Hartwig, parents of at least two daughters, Eva and Elsa. They lived in south Minneapolis, MN, and when they bought a house in 1920 I believe Carl was about 50 years old. I now live in that house and have found a letter from Eva (I believe; the signature page is missing) written in about 1935 (the date is only given as "Saturday, March 26" and other clues lead me to believe it is 1935). I would like to return the letter to members of the family because it contains some wonderful details of their life. I have run into a brick wall trying to go forward from Carl and Karen. Carl died August 1941 and Karen, I believe, died in 1953. Their obituaries do not identify children, so I don't know what happened to them -- married names or where they lived. Can anyone help? Thanks! Wendy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would love a copy. My grandpa changed his name from Hartwig to Hartwick. So some of my relatives are Hartwigs while others are Hartwick. Most are from the Avoca and Muscoda area of Wisconsin. Do you need my mailing address??? -- Love and kisses, Mrs Shipman
