Hi Elain, I got out a book on the Livingston-Carlton lines of Haywood Co. Tn. and found your information. It is not much but hope it will help. Your Carlton line looks like this The Carlton line starts in K. & Q. Co. Va. actually, it begins earlier about mid 1600's in counties predating K. & Q. but that part has not been documented yet. 1st generation: John Carlton [email protected] ownere in K.&Q Co 2nd gen.Edward Carlton (1701-1758) on a patition in above co. in 1744 believed to be Edward Carlton listed as an original vestryman of Antrim Parish, Halifax co Va in 1752 3rd gen Edward Carlton (1724-1764) Almost surely the father of John Carleton (below) since the latter had a son and a granson named Edward Note that the name is spelled Carlton, Carleton and Charlton through the lines. 4th gen. JOHN cARLTON born in K. & Q. Co. Va. Dec.11 1748 Died in Halifax Co. N.C. April 2, 1787. Served in the Revolution in 1781. Married Mary Hunt, October 7, 1768. She died July 2, 1789 also in Halifax Co. N.C. John Carlton is the first member of the family of whom there are any records and these are meager. Capt. Pinckney Carlton, a granson of this John Carlton and a native of Statesville, n.c. supplied the data given on John and Mary Hunt Carlton. It is stated that they married in K. & Q. Co. and their three known children were born there. Sometime in the 1770's John Carleton and his family left . It was long believed they moved to Halifax Va. but no records about them whatsoever there. >From Pierce's Register MSS in the Library of Congress, page 6 Certificate # 90724 John Carlton Certificate # 90725 David Carlton >From the roster of the Continental Line of N.C. page 117 John Carleton, Pt. Jones Co. Enlisted Dec. 7, 1781 Discharged Jan. 1 1783. The same identical info given for David Carleton. It is almost certain that David was a brother of John Carleton, but there is no further info on him. Now, since Halifax Va. and Halifax N.C. are on the same border it is possible that John did live in this county and that he went across the border and joined N.C. line. However it is stated that both John Carleton and his wife died in Halifax N.C. the editor states that he wrote the Probate Court in Halifax N. C. and was told there were no records on John Carleton in that county. ( I have had the same info given to me by county clerks but when I make a personal visit I find Lots.) ...The 3 known children of John and Mary Hunt Carleton were: Philemon Carlton, Edward Carlton and ELIZABETH CARLTON. 5th gen. Edward Carlton, Sr. Born @ 1771. Died @ 1831 Married 1.---------2.Mary C. Averett in 1820 He first appears in Halifax. Co. Va. buying 100 acres next to his brother Philemon in 1796.He bought the property from his brother Philemon. Edward appeared as witness to two land transaction of Philemons and bougt additional land from him in 1803. He continued to appear as a purchaser of land up to the yr. 1828. He is belived to have died in 1831. ( I have the signature of Edward Carleton along with Anthony Hart,Sr. My Rev. anscestor on a bond for Thomas Jefferies to attend to the will of one Thomas Gresham. These names run together through several generations) Time of Edward Carltons death is established approx. by the following "1848" Amounts of money were listd as being paid to Mrs. Yancey(Philip) and Mrs. Fitzgerald (Edward) for board. Both of these women were daughters of Philemon Carlton. The author states: After careful study of the records I charted the children of Edward Carlton Sr. as follows: Leroy Carlton Married Nancy Owen, Dec. 1 1822 bondsman Thomas Owen Thomas W. Carlton married Elizabeth N. Major, Nov. 14, 1826 born in 1797 George Carlton married Elizabeth Owen Dec. 22, 1823 born 1800 bondsman, father Thomas Owen John W. Carleton married Martha Willingham, Dec. 18, 1826 born 1805 daughter of Johnston Willingham Mary Ann Carlton married Peter Robertson, Nov. 18, 1819 bondsman Edward Carlton Susan Carlton marrried Thomas Carlton, Oct. 22, 1822 bondsman, Edward Carlton Most of the children of Edward Carlton, Sr. migrated from Halifax Va. to Ga. in the 1830's 3 of the sons, Thomas W., George and John W. were listed on the census of 1850 as living in Coweta County, Georgia. Descendants of Thomas W. Carlton now live in Atlanta. Georgia, Leroy Carlton and Mary Ann Carlton who married Peter Robertson are believed to have migrated to Alabama. 5th generation ELIZABETH CARLTON born about 1775, Died in 1840 Elizabeth Carlton married 1.John Davenport and had Susannah Davenport who married Joe Cravens in Ky. in 1811 Nancy Davenport m. John Anderson in Ky. in 1816 Elizabeth Carlton married 2. JAMES KIDD and had: Phil C. Kidd ( I would guess his name to be Philemon Carlton) James Kidd Elizabeth Carlton married 3.Peter Perry and had: Mariah Perry Joana Perry Oliver Hazard Perry Elizabeth Carltons 3rd marriage to Peter Perry is recorded in Halifax Co. Va. marriage records " Peter Perry to E. Kidd, Jan. 1, 1808. Bondsman Edward Carlton and Phil Yancy, (her brother and her nephew-in law) Phil Yancy married Priscilla Carlton 1790-1871 on Oct. 5, 1803. They moved to Tennessee along with Anthony Carlton into Haywood Co. where there were many descendents. Phil Yance was bondman for my g-g- granfather when he was named executor of his fathers estate. The author says " All the foregoing informatin on Elizabeth Carlton was sent to me in 1959 by Mrs. W. Parke Taylor of Paducah, Ky. a g-g-grandaughter of Elizabeth Carlton through her son Oliver Hazard Perry. Hope this helps some. Wish I had more, but it is a starting point. >From: [email protected] >Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 07:48:54 EDT >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: KIDD/Carlton in K & Q Co, VA > >Thanks for the reply.
