I am taking the liberty of reposting an email I sent several days ago so folks will understand my next question. I have singled out Anne in the list below. This Anne, the 2nd daughter, married Nathaniel Hart. I am confused on the identity of "Mrs. Henry Clay" - or rather *which* Henry Clay the Mrs. is married to. Some say Henry Clay, the illustrious Secretary of State. I thought it was Henry Clay, Anne's own brother - isn't his last name Gist? Did he change his name to Clay? Are Anne's brother Henry Clay (Gist?) and Senator/Secretary Henry Clay *the same person*? I would have thought that Nathaniel Hart's sister and her senatorial husband were just in-laws of 2nd daughter, Anne. But the two Henry Clays can make me want to lay down in a dark room with a cool cloth on my forehead. I apologize for sounding so (duh!) addled, but I am! Help! Edith Cromwell. They had: Richard Gist, "surveyor of the Western Shore" m. Zipporah Murray. They had: Two sons and (Capt.) Christopher Gist (d. summer 1759 of smallpox in SC or GA, guide to George Washington, m. Sarah Howard. Christopher and Sarah had: --A son (Col.) Nathaniel Gist ("the only son that married"). He was a colonel in the Virginia line during the Rev. War. Then he moved to Kentucky, where he died "early in the 19th century." --A son Richard, who was killed in the battle of King's Mountain. --A son Thomas, who "lived on the plantation." --A daughter Anne, who lived with Thomas until he died, then went to Kentucky to live with her brother Nathaniel. --A daughter Violette. The above Nathaniel Gist ("the only son that married") had issue of: --Henry Clay. --Thomas Cecil. --Sara "eldest" m. Hon.
