I don't have an answer to your question, but I have a suggestion: If you can find your family in a census (eg, 1870, x County, Arkansas), then trace the 10 families before and after your family and see where they came from. Good chance that your family came from the county/state where the majority of those other 20 families came from. Try it --- it often works.
