My cousin's wife is descended from Michael Henry (Morris) HART who was born in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1796 and was brought to Portsmouth, UK in 1798. His parents were Nathan and Jenny; they appear to have stayed in the USA. It is likely that this is the same Nathan HART who appears in Georgetown, SC on the 1790 census; who is listed as an indigo dealer in the Georgetown records; and who had a daughter Maria who died on 13 August 1793 aged 8 months and is buried in Georgetown's Jewish cemetery. Apparently he claimed Sephardi descent from Jews who left Spain for North America in 1492. Michael Henry HART married Esther, daughter of David DAVIS. He was a merchant and a tailor, and died in Portsmouth in 1858. Does anyone know anything about the ancestry of Nathan HART of Georgetown, SC; especially, anything that can trace the trail back, perhaps through early Marrano colonists of the region, to Spain?
