    3. Dear Kate, By "crest" I suppose that you mean "coat-of-arms" of which a crest is a component. Coats-of arms were/are granted to individuals, not to families. They were/are inherited by the owner's eldest son. The rest is fiction. But you will always find someone willing to sell you a "family" coat of arms, even if your name is Johnson. 3. Be aware that many family crests have been created just for sales. My surname is usually shown as English with a crest that is "hundreds of years old." In reality, my surname is a mutation of the original Dutch surname Van Kouwenhoven (meaning "from Kouwenhoven"), which was adopted in the 1600's in the "New World." The heraldry on the website previously given has started saying that Crownover is of Netherlands origin, but use the same coat of arms that it did when it was "English." The majority of "Van Kouwenhoven" descendants became Conovers. The Heraldry site says nothing of Conovers being anything except of English in origin. This is a long way of saying that there are "smoke and mirrors" in heraldry. Jim Crownover- CA -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
