    1. [HART-L] Samuel HART
    2. Cush and Karen Anthony
    3. I am looking for any record of Samuel Hart in Co. Cavan or Ulster. We think he was born about 1815 in Co. Cavan (or 1812). This birth date is calculated from ages given in census records only; no documentary evidence of the date has been located so far. He emigrated to Canada by at least 1835 or earlier. The Samuel Hart who emigrated to Canada before 1835, my ancestor, married Rebecca Kelly. Rebecca was born in Ireland also, but I do not know where. We believe that Samuel and Rebecca both came from Belfast, or near Belfast, though some elderly folks thought they remembered Co. Cavan as their ancestors' home county. They married February 2, 1840, and left immediately for Canada, arriving (in Canada or possibly at their initial destination, a town called Athens, near Brockville in what is now Ontario) in June 1840, where they stayed for about a year before moving up to the new homestead near Bishops Mills). My great grandfather Maurice was born in Canada December 25, 1840. All his siblings were born in Canada also. Samuel Hart was born in 1815, though one penciled-in note says, inconsistently, 1812. He apparently had six brothers and sisters - John, Martha, James, Nancy, Maurice, and Jane - as well as a half-brother, Robert, and a half-sister, Violet. Some of Rebecca (Kelly) Hart's relatives also emigrated to Canada and lived not too far away. Some of Samuel's brothers and sisters also emigrated, not only to Canada but also to the US, Australia and New Zealand. Samuel and Rebecca's first son was named Maurice (or Morris?) and their other sons were named James, Samuel and John. Perhaps he might have named them for his father or other male relatives in Ireland??? Their daughters were named Martha Jane, Agnys ("Nancy"), and Anna Bella. Maurice married in Canada and his sons were named Samuel, David Lorenzo, Charles Merrill, Eli Maurice, and Archibald Arthur. His daughters were named Margaret, Ella, Elizabeth Rubena, and Agnes. Eli was my grandfather. I am looking for any information on Samuel Hart and Rebecca Kelly in Ireland. Family memories say "Co. Cavan was our homeland" but there are also references to "Belfast." The Cana House in Cavan found no references for a Samuel Hart or a Rebecca Kelly, though they did find a Margaret Hart born in 1831 whose father was Samuel! Thank you, Karen Hart Anthony

    1. [HART-L] Lesson for today
    2. While we are at this business of genealogy we have an excellent opportunity to improve our use of the English language. One of the common errors observed deals with the use of "who" and "that." Test- When one is referring to a person the correct expression is which of the following? Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, THAT married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. or Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, WHO married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. If you don't know, it is the latter. Best, Hugh
