This is what I know of my forebears: Samuel Hart (b. c. 1815 in Ireland) married Rebecca Kelly (b. c. 1809?) in Ireland, probably Co. Cavan. Rebecca's parents were James Kelly and Jane ?. They had 4 daughters. Her siblings were: 1-Anna Bella or Isabella Kelly, b. about 1800. She married John Caughey on 17 Jan 1828, son of Nicholas Caughey. He was born about 1800 in Ballyshiel, County Armagh, Ireland. He died 25 Nov 1871. 2-Jane Kelly, b. 1800 (?), married David Jeffrey and she was married in 1831. 3-Mary Kelly, b ?, married James McHenry on 23 April 1830 4. Rebecca Kelly married Samuel Hart on 15 Mar 1840. These two are my forebears. They emigrated to Canada It's likely that Samuel Hart was from Co. Cavan, Ireland, and it's possible that Rebecca Kelly might have been from Co. Armagh in Ireland, or it could be she was also from Co. Cavan. Some of Rebecca (Kelly) Hart's relatives also emigrated to Canada. Some of Samuel's brothers and sisters also emigrated, not only to Canada but also to the US, Australia and New Zealand.died before 1839. Some of Rebecca (Kelly) Hart's relatives also emigrated to Canada. Some of Samuel's brothers and sisters also emigrated, not only to Canada but also to the US, Australia and New Zealand. Samuel apparently had six brothers and sisters - John, Martha, James, Nancy, Maurice, and Jane - as well as a half-brother, Robert, and a half-sister, Violet. Samuel and Rebecca's first son was named Maurice (or Morris?), born in Canada, probably named after Samuel's brother back in Ireland, and their other sons were named James, Samuel and John. Their daughters were named Martha Jane, Agnys ("Nancy"), and Anna Bella. It seems that Anna Bella might have been named for her mother Rebecca's eldest sister back in Ireland. Maurice married in Canada and his sons were named Samuel, David Lorenzo, Charles Merrill, Eli Maurice, and Archibald Arthur. His daughters were named Margaret, Ella, Elizabeth Rubena, and Agnes. Eli was my grandfather. Elderly folks remembered Co. Cavan as our forebears' home county. Other memories say "Belfast." So it sounds like they were from either what we now call Northern Ireland, or, since the Cavan name seems a strong memory, likely in the area of Ireland just south of Northern Ireland. My father always said he was "Scots-Irish." One of Maurice (Morris)' sons was Archibald Arthur Hart. He apparently had a serious falling out with Maurice Hart, his father. Whatever it was, Archibald took it seriously enough to move to the States and assume another name. Maurice was, from all reports, a rigidly religious man and was not very tolerant at all. I don't really know if Samuel and Rebecca were protestant or not -- some folks have told me the children's names appear to be protestant, but who knows. Karen Hart Anthony Falmouth, Maine Hello Karen. Thought I would respond since there seems to be some similarities between the HART branch that I am researching and the one you are researching. My Harts came from Canada and moved to Michigan in the mid-1800s. As far as I can tell, John Hart, my ggggrandfather, was born in New Brunswick and it appears this line was in the U. S. originally since there is some information that ties this branch to John Hart, the signer of the Declaration of Indepedence. What I have been told (undocumented) is that my people went to Nova Scotia/New Brunswick because they were Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. The similarities of the chosen first names and the location Canada makes me wonder if there is a link. Here is another site I found and corresponded with the sources and am now convinced that these people are my line: Jonathan and Jemina Hartt My gggrandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Hart, was alive until the late 1920s and my grandfather knew her. Hi Beth... not that I know of but my Harts were migrating to Ohio by 1811 with my line in the Richland/Morrow County area. It appears others may have scattered around the state but I don't know of any that were in Hocking Co. I have a number of names/dates for these branch lines but fewer locations so can you post a descendant tree so I and others could search for some familiar names/dates? I'd be glad to look over my list if you would! Hope to hear from you. Best wishes, Mike Thorne Down below my name & addy is part of my own descendant tree for starts. Just playing on the internet. >From www.irish-roots.net I looked up "chief surnames" for each county in Ireland. There were no Harts included as "chief surnames" in Co. Cavan, where my family memories say we came from, but did find some in Leitrim and Sligo, as follows. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some People with Leitrim Ancestry Ancestors of Australian Prime Ministers Stanley Melbourne Bruce and Francis Forde hailed from County Leitrim as did John Harte, Premier of British Colombia, and Robert Strawbridge - the man who brought Methodism to the U.S.A. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surnames of County Sligo The top ten most common surnames in County Sligo are as follows: Gallagher, Brennan, MacGowan, Kelly, Gilmartin, Healy, Walsh, Hart, Feeney and MacDonagh. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Folks, My GG/Grandfather was Gabriel Hart... I have found him in KY in 1829. Gabriel was b. abt 1795 in SC according to family record. He moved to KY and married a Mary "Poly" May on 30 Dec 1817, in Daviess Co. They had four sons, which are recorded as William Jones, b.1822 in KY; Samuel W., b. 1828 in KY; Marine Gabriel b. 1833 in KY: and John F., b. 1835 in KY. In 1839 Gabriel relocated his family to Spencer Co., IN 14 Jan 1850 William Jones (my G/Grandfather) married Mary Jane Hahn who was from Ohio, b 28 Jan 1833. The other three sons are listed as still living at home in the 1850 Census of Spencer Co., Grass TWP. Folks, I'm afraid it will take a good twenty mule team to pull me out of this bog... seems this ol' horse can't do it. Can anyone help me link Gabriel to his parents in SC? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated, and many thanks for your time and courtesy. Sam Hart Grand Prairie, TX
Hello all. With the talk about Harts in Kentucky I thought I'd post my query. I am looking for information about Richard Hart b. abt. 1795 in Kentucky. From the census I've learned that his parents were born in Maryland. I don't know when they emigrated to Kentucky. Richard around 1860 moved to Mitchell Co., North Carolina and married Jane Amanda McKinney. They had two children David Columbus (my g-g-grandfather) b. 1867 and Julia b. 1869. I don't know if this is a second marriage or not, but Richard was considerably older than Jane. Additionally Richard was a doctor and in some census reports his is listed as Doctor R. Hart or Doc Hart. He was listed in the 1880 census at the age of 85. I don't know exactly when he died. Some members of the family say he is buried somewhere around the Appalachian trial in North Carolina. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Take care, Melanie Storie Elizabethton, Tennessee
Stephen Hart, in Farmington, CT until his death in March of 1682/3 had a few descendants who moved to Kentucky. Information about some of them are available online at my web site. There are certainly others: http://users.rcn.com/harts.ma.ultranet/family/andrews/p355.html#n1427 http://users.rcn.com/harts.ma.ultranet/family/andrews/p471.html#n2013 There is a much larger Kentucky Hart family, descendants of Nathaniel Hart of Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky, who helped settle Boonesborough, Ky. Many of his descendants are still in Kentucky. Info here: http://www.mcnallyalley.com/index2.html I don't see a Florida Hart in any of my immediately available information. Hi Shirley, not my Hart's (who went through Ohio). BUT, you might check in early Madison Co, KY. I had other family members who came through NC with the Boone's and were in Boonesboro in the 1770's. I believe there were a few Hart's there early who moved on and built Hart's Station if memory serves. It wasn't too far from Boonesboro and was a historically significant outpost in early Kentucky. Sorry I can't help with any specifics but represents a bunch of Hart's I wish I could claim as my own... Perhaps you can. Good luck and hope this helps! Hello, I am back from the hospital, with staples in my tummy and feeling fine. I was wondering if any of you who are looking for Hart people have run across a W. K. Lewis, who is a cousin of a friend of mine, who is married to Ken Hart, whose grandparents were Emory and Ida Belle Bridges Hart. Thanks in advance for any information you may give me. Also I am still looking for the Harts of Kentucky. My grandmother Florida Hart Elliott. I would like to know who her parents were. I don't think there is a connection with my Harts, but, who knows? maybe there is. Hello, Recently, a friend recommended this list to me to find information on my Harts in San Patricio County, Texas. I have very limited information on them, except that they possibly have migrated from Pikes County, mississippi. Also, I was told that there was a book written about the Hart's in Miss. If you have information, can you please reply to me? Thanks, Wesley G. Hart
