    3. Greetings After seeing Tim's success I thought I'd post this obituary to see if there's anyone who can connect to this line. BTW, this is a wonderful obituary - the only thing missing are her parents, who remain unknown. Cindy Borodkin [email protected] REF: Obit of Laura (Hart) Cox , Mediapolis New Era News, 11 April 1917 Laura Hart was born in Hawkin [Hocking] county, Ohio, February 3rd, 1827, and passed away at her home in Mediapolis, Iowa, Friday, April 6, 1917, in her ninety-first year. In 1845 she was united in marriage to Philip Cox. In 1848 they came to Iowa and located on a farm north of what is now the present site of Mediapolis. They later bought and occupied the farm known as the Philip Cox farm, now owned by James Deam, north of Mediapolis, and lived there many years, moving to Mediapolis about seventeen years ago. Mr. Cox passed away about two years after they moved to town and since then the mother has made her home here with her son, Timothy. For many years Mrs. Cox was a member of the Methodist church and her last days were days of peaceful waiting for the summons for her to come home. Mrs. Cox was the mother of twelve children, six sons and six daughters, five of them having preceded the mother in death. These were: Henry Clay, William F., Samuel B., Francis M. and Mary Ann, the latter dying in infancy. Those left to mourn the going of the mother are: Timothy, of this place; George, of Edison, Neb.; Mrs. Rachel B. Darlington, of Woodburn; Mrs. Jane Boss, of Chariton; Mrs. Josephine Wilson, of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Elizabeth Purcell, of Bayette, Idaho; and Mrs. Olive Mickey, of Osceola, Nebraska. Besides these there are some thirty-three grand-children, thirty-nine great grand-children and six great-grand-children. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church last Sunday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. N. A. Swickard. Interment in the Kossuth cemetery. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter was supposedly from somewhere in Canada ( I know it's a big place, but it's all the information I have!), and he spoke French. I have no information about Lizzie. Walter married Minnie Swett. His first wife (I think her name was Thelma) died, leaving him with four children. I would also like information on his first wife. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I am really becoming desperate!! Thanks in advance!! Cheryl [email protected]

    3. Thanks for all the replies! I have posted this before, but here goes again: Fred Listman HART Emma (KIRCHNER) HART Jack B. Richard B. George N. Fred's immigration date unknown. Only known place of residence: City of Chicago, between 1920 and 1935. The only reason I know that is word of mouth - my Dad grew up in Chicago. All I know about Fred is that he was a musician and had a music publishing company. I have orderd a 1920 census check from the NARA, and hope to get an immigration date. I really need a date of death! I only know he died before WWII, because my Dad stayed out of the war to take car of his mother. (The other brothers were serving.) Is it possible to request a death certificate search when I have no idea when he died? Up to now I've been concentrating on my mother's side because I can do all the research right here in my own county. My father's side of the family is starting out to be a real headache! Hopefully I'll be getting some useful information soon. Tim

    3. Hi Stan, I too know very little. Here is what I do know. My grandfather Samuel Harts immigrated from Russia through the port of Hamburg as a young boy. His mother had remarried and it wasn't until my grandfather was older that he took the name Harts. I am suspecting that his real father may have been a Harts, and he took his original name back. His mother was Dina Marshak married Samuel Zoger(Zager) -2nd marriage. He had some 1/2 brothers and sisters, I think the one named Sarah was his real sister. Family says his father always lived in Reading, Pa but so far I have not found out his name. Very frustrating as the records in that part of Russia (now Belarus) are written in Russian. Sounds like your family history is most interesting. Does any of mine sound familiar? I think Reading (Berks Co) was a heavily populated German area so you never know, your theory about them originating in Germany could very well be. An old cousin said the name was Hart not Harts, but my grandfather used Harts as well as my maiden name is Harts. Wonder if we'll ever know. Keep in touch. Happy hunting. 2. I have posted this before, but thought I would do it again for new subscribers. I saw a couple of postings about New York Heartt (Hart) lines. I have a record of the gravestones and inscriptions for the "Old Dutch Burying Ground of Sleepy Hollow" in North Tarrytown, New York. I found this book in an old book store while on vacation. It has about a dozen listings for Hart, Harte, and Heartt people. They died between the years 1820 and 1890. The earliest gravestone has a 1760 date of death for a Sara Fochee Enters. lso buried in this cemetery is Jane Van Winkel who died in 1799. She was the relict of Henry Van Winkel. I did upload a file of the complete index which is now in the AOL library. I will do lookups if you have a name. Jan Wilson Mason, Ohio

    3. Hi Tim, I too am researching the surname Harts (with an s) but of jewish ancestry. Mine immigrated about 1895 to NY. As far as the ship lists, the reason you probably find Harts immigrating from Germany is because the port of Hamburg is where many left from whether they were from Russia, Austria-Hungry, or wherever. At the LDS they have what is called the Hamburg lists and if your ancestor left from Hamburg these are suppose to be a very good source(but a little difficult to use). Hope this helps somewhat, and good luck in your search. 3. Maybe I should explain a little more: My roots, or my understanding of them, go back no farther that 1887. I haven't even found my Hart grandfather yet! But my Dad said he came from Germany. I have requested a census search, and hopefully (if I have the correct county) that will provide a correct immigration date. In the meantime, I am searching for other German Harts. I think I'm on the right track, because my other German ancesters came over about the same time. But, you can probably tell I haven't been doing this long.... I have seen the name spelled HARDT and HARTE. There may be other ways, but I can't think of them at the moment. The ones I have seen on ship lists came from the "more German" parts of Germany. By that, I mean the areas now known as central Germany, not Pommern or other regions farther away. Sorry, I don't really know much about Germany, so I can't be very factual. Hey, it would be funny if I found out that my Harts are actually Irish, wouldn't it? Thanks, Tim

Yet, in searching ship's passenger lists, I do find Harts immigrating from Germany. And the spelling, while sometimes different than "HART," is often the same. I'd really love to hear some thoughts from those more genealogically knowledgeable than myself. Thanks! Tim

Wrightsborough Settlement is an extinct Quaker settlement located in now Mc Duffie Co., GA. The Harts traveled from NC and settled with the Quakers in GA. There were three Harts who received land grants from Gov James Wright in 1770: James, Peter and Samuel. Esther Hart, wife of Samuel, requested in 1788 to "be joined in membership" with the Quakers. She later married in 1790 Amos Green, according to the Minutes of the Men's Monthly Meeting. D H Deci Researching: HART, MUNDY, KNOWLTON, MALLORY, DRANE, CARTER, ANSLEY, ANDREWS, BURSON in GA
