    2. I dont know how you people can be so heartless, I for one DO believe it has a lot to do with genealogy. One of my ancestors was the 2nd largest slave importer out of Charleston SC, and anyone who does not think it pertains to that, is sadley mistaken.

Interested in finding out what you think..................Ciji WHO SENT THE SHIPS? In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships(Ez. 30:9). If you ever want to know the mindset of a black man, go to a black barber shop. When you do you will hear discussions about politics, religion, sports- and, of course, racial problems. One day after God healed me on the airplane, I walked into one of the main black barber shops in Orlando, Florida. The men in there were having a heated discussion about the injustices of the American system. The brothers were venting and protesting about how the white man's system was totally against black progress. This particular day the brothers were vehemently enumerating the many injustices each had encountered during their lifetimes. One manwas going on about the lack of jobs, the lack of recreational parks, the injustices of the school system, and the inequality of whites and blacks in general. "Look at our neighborhood," he said. "There are no parks in the neighborhood for our kids to play in like in the white neighborhoods. There are no jobs for our black men. Why should they work at McDonald's or Burger King for minimum wage when they can sell dope on the corner and make more in one day than they can in a month at a fast food place?" He got louder and louder, feeling justified in his rage. It was like they were having church and he was the preacher with all the other brothers saying, "Amen." Earlier in my life I would have joined in with them and stolen the man's pulpit. But there is something about the truth. When you know it, it will make you free-- and God had made me free on the airplane that day. I questioned whether I should sit and listen to their heated dismay about the system or if I should even enter the discussion. Then I heard this man say, "We were over in Africa, minding our own business, when all of a sudden the white man decided to enslave us out of his greed and hatred for blacks. They brought us over here in the ships..." --Who's Really To Blame? That was all I could take. So I stood up and said, "Brothers, we blame the white man for everything." They knew I was a preacher, so they listenedto me respectfully. "But our real problem is with God, not with the white man." That got their attention. All eyes were on me, as they waited to hear how I would explain this outrageous statement. "We were in Egypt," I continued, "in power for three thousand years. We are indeed the descendants of Egyptians. We were scientists and inventors, educators and writers." Well, they liked that. Because whenever you talk about blacks being descendants of the great civilization of ancient Egypt, you get our attention because we have been put down so much and so long. Whenever we hear anything that gives us any credibility or validation, we perk up. Then I added, "But that also means we were the first slave masters. We enslaved Israel for four hundred years." Now they were surprised. "We were on top, but now we're not because we picked a fight with God." Now they were very surprised. Then I noticed a Bible on thecounter, so I picked it up. Even with the Islamic influence in the black community, most blacks still fear and respect the Bible. I started reading some of the verses in Isaiah 19 thatspoke about God's judgement of Egypt because of its idolatry, witchcraft, and sorcery. I talked about the idols we worshipped in Africa. Then I showed them the first mention of slavery: And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts(v. 4). They cried in disbelief, "You mean to say God permitted that to happen?"So I responded, "Yes, because He did it before with Israel and any nation who turned from Him." But the real bomb dropped when I got to the ship. I flipped to Ezekiel 30 and read: In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid, and great pain shall come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, lo, it cometh(v. 9). "The Lord sent the ships to pick us up," I said quietly, waiting for everything to sink in. "He raised up the white man to bring the ships to pick us up and enslave us." How there was absolute silence in that barber shop. One of the men there was in ministry and wanted to see where I read from. When I showed him, he confirmed it to everyone. "It's in there," he said. So I decided to continue in Ezekiel. Though they were shocked, The missing pieces of the puzzle had to be added. The Vexed Heart of the White Man "I now want to tell you why the white man can't stand us," I announced. Then I read: will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou has not known (Ez. 32:9). "God vexed the white man's heart against us-- the black race," I said somberly. His heart is irritated at us. "Well that was it. That was the knock-out punch. You could hear the parking meters ticking outdoors. Because He Loved Us A black television minister once said he was glad the ships came. So am I. They came because God loved us too much to leave us in idolatry. When I look at the tribal warfare that is going on in Africa and the multiplicity of problems there -- drought, dissension and political wars __ I'm glad that the ships came. God used drastic means to bring us out of a life of idol worship, darkness and ignorance, but He did bring us out into the knowledge of the one true God. Plus, the black slaves in America eventually gained their freedom. This historic struggle for liberation set a precedent for the whole world. God sent deliverers such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King to release the people -- both white and black -- from the horrid reality of the curses on them. Freedom and deliverance for blacks everywhere began in the United States. The struggle for liberation has now traveled to other parts of the world, such as South Africa, like ripples on a pond. Though the United States wasn't the original instigator of slavery, it became a model for deliverance from it. Black people don't want to admit this, but somebody needs to say it. Black people still believe this is a racist society, and it is in a sense. But America is where God's deliverance began. it is a paradox, yes. I'm sorry we had to be enslaved, but I'm certainly glad the ships came. A Loving God Hates Sin It is hard to believe that a loving God would allow such evil to happen to the black people. It shows us how intemperate God can get when it comes to the sin of idol worship. We know these things happened, and that they'restill happening because men need to turn to the truth. If God is for you, who can be against you? (Rom. 8:31). But if He's against you, the prophecy will continue. Because of the presence of sin on earth, life isn't fair, and it won't be until sin is removed. So don't expect things to be fair. The fact that God punished us so severely for idolatry by raising up so terrible a slave master lets us know how serious God is about sin. The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). Not just sickness, but death. Not just poverty, death. Not just suffering, death. There's nothing worse than death. So, in order to rescue us from it, God sometimes uses the executioner to carry out punishment. This is the other side of God -- the side that punishes sin to rescue the sinner from death. He does all this to curb our desire to go afteranother God. God is a jealous God. He doesn't want us to have any other gods but Him. Think about it. God allowed His only begotten Son to experience death through the most gruesome way to die -- on the cross. Jesus suffered for hours, to take on the sin of mankind, and none of us can imagine what that was like. So if God was willing to give up His only Son because of sin, you know He is willing to destroy anybody else who plays with it, especially the sin of idolatry. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth(Heb. 12:6). God told me to, "Tell the people that I did it. I did it because I oved them," because those whom He loves, He chastises. And He won't back down from the reality of what He did. God is a God of justice and a God of love. We provoked Him to the drastic measure of grinding idolatry out of us, so now we can sing: "Father, I stretch my hand to thee and no other help I know." Now we don't have to be involved in idol worship any more. We don't have to serve any other god but the true and living God through His Son Jesus Christ. I don't apologize for God. I believe He told me not to. He is God, Who does what He wants to fulfill His will. And I believe He wants everybody to know that He sent the ships. But the prophecies didn't end with the ships. They continued to follow black people today author: Rev. Earl Carter Again I encourage you to buy this book. Title: No Apology Necessary Author: Rev. Earl Carter --part0_905962582_boundary--

    1. [HART-L] Re: KIDD/Carlton in K & Q Co, VA
    2. Marie Coady
    3. Hi Elain, I got out a book on the Livingston-Carlton lines of Haywood Co. Tn. and found your information. It is not much but hope it will help. Your Carlton line looks like this The Carlton line starts in K. & Q. Co. Va. actually, it begins earlier about mid 1600's in counties predating K. & Q. but that part has not been documented yet. 1st generation: John Carlton [email protected] ownere in K.&Q Co 2nd gen.Edward Carlton (1701-1758) on a patition in above co. in 1744 believed to be Edward Carlton listed as an original vestryman of Antrim Parish, Halifax co Va in 1752 3rd gen Edward Carlton (1724-1764) Almost surely the father of John Carleton (below) since the latter had a son and a granson named Edward Note that the name is spelled Carlton, Carleton and Charlton through the lines. 4th gen. JOHN cARLTON born in K. & Q. Co. Va. Dec.11 1748 Died in Halifax Co. N.C. April 2, 1787. Served in the Revolution in 1781. Married Mary Hunt, October 7, 1768. She died July 2, 1789 also in Halifax Co. N.C. John Carlton is the first member of the family of whom there are any records and these are meager. Capt. Pinckney Carlton, a granson of this John Carlton and a native of Statesville, n.c. supplied the data given on John and Mary Hunt Carlton. It is stated that they married in K. & Q. Co. and their three known children were born there. Sometime in the 1770's John Carleton and his family left . It was long believed they moved to Halifax Va. but no records about them whatsoever there. >From Pierce's Register MSS in the Library of Congress, page 6 Certificate # 90724 John Carlton Certificate # 90725 David Carlton >From the roster of the Continental Line of N.C. page 117 John Carleton, Pt. Jones Co. Enlisted Dec. 7, 1781 Discharged Jan. 1 1783. The same identical info given for David Carleton. It is almost certain that David was a brother of John Carleton, but there is no further info on him. Now, since Halifax Va. and Halifax N.C. are on the same border it is possible that John did live in this county and that he went across the border and joined N.C. line. However it is stated that both John Carleton and his wife died in Halifax N.C. the editor states that he wrote the Probate Court in Halifax N. C. and was told there were no records on John Carleton in that county. ( I have had the same info given to me by county clerks but when I make a personal visit I find Lots.) ...The 3 known children of John and Mary Hunt Carleton were: Philemon Carlton, Edward Carlton and ELIZABETH CARLTON. 5th gen. Edward Carlton, Sr. Born @ 1771. Died @ 1831 Married 1.---------2.Mary C. Averett in 1820 He first appears in Halifax. Co. Va. buying 100 acres next to his brother Philemon in 1796.He bought the property from his brother Philemon. Edward appeared as witness to two land transaction of Philemons and bougt additional land from him in 1803. He continued to appear as a purchaser of land up to the yr. 1828. He is belived to have died in 1831. ( I have the signature of Edward Carleton along with Anthony Hart,Sr. My Rev. anscestor on a bond for Thomas Jefferies to attend to the will of one Thomas Gresham. These names run together through several generations) Time of Edward Carltons death is established approx. by the following "1848" Amounts of money were listd as being paid to Mrs. Yancey(Philip) and Mrs. Fitzgerald (Edward) for board. Both of these women were daughters of Philemon Carlton. The author states: After careful study of the records I charted the children of Edward Carlton Sr. as follows: Leroy Carlton Married Nancy Owen, Dec. 1 1822 bondsman Thomas Owen Thomas W. Carlton married Elizabeth N. Major, Nov. 14, 1826 born in 1797 George Carlton married Elizabeth Owen Dec. 22, 1823 born 1800 bondsman, father Thomas Owen John W. Carleton married Martha Willingham, Dec. 18, 1826 born 1805 daughter of Johnston Willingham Mary Ann Carlton married Peter Robertson, Nov. 18, 1819 bondsman Edward Carlton Susan Carlton marrried Thomas Carlton, Oct. 22, 1822 bondsman, Edward Carlton Most of the children of Edward Carlton, Sr. migrated from Halifax Va. to Ga. in the 1830's 3 of the sons, Thomas W., George and John W. were listed on the census of 1850 as living in Coweta County, Georgia. Descendants of Thomas W. Carlton now live in Atlanta. Georgia, Leroy Carlton and Mary Ann Carlton who married Peter Robertson are believed to have migrated to Alabama. 5th generation ELIZABETH CARLTON born about 1775, Died in 1840 Elizabeth Carlton married 1.John Davenport and had Susannah Davenport who married Joe Cravens in Ky. in 1811 Nancy Davenport m. John Anderson in Ky. in 1816 Elizabeth Carlton married 2. JAMES KIDD and had: Phil C. Kidd ( I would guess his name to be Philemon Carlton) James Kidd Elizabeth Carlton married 3.Peter Perry and had: Mariah Perry Joana Perry Oliver Hazard Perry Elizabeth Carltons 3rd marriage to Peter Perry is recorded in Halifax Co. Va. marriage records " Peter Perry to E. Kidd, Jan. 1, 1808. Bondsman Edward Carlton and Phil Yancy, (her brother and her nephew-in law) Phil Yancy married Priscilla Carlton 1790-1871 on Oct. 5, 1803. They moved to Tennessee along with Anthony Carlton into Haywood Co. where there were many descendents. Phil Yance was bondman for my g-g- granfather when he was named executor of his fathers estate. The author says " All the foregoing informatin on Elizabeth Carlton was sent to me in 1959 by Mrs. W. Parke Taylor of Paducah, Ky. a g-g-grandaughter of Elizabeth Carlton through her son Oliver Hazard Perry. Hope this helps some. Wish I had more, but it is a starting point. >From: [email protected] >Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 07:48:54 EDT >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: KIDD/Carlton in K & Q Co, VA > >Thanks for the reply. It is my will that my funeral expenses and all my debts be paid. 2nd. I give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife, Catherine Hart in lieu of her dower, all my lands and tenements, including the plantation on which we now reside, situated in the said County of Belmont, together with all my chattel property, livestock of all description and my monies, credits and effects of any description, during her natural life (excepting one small brown horse with a bald face, now on the farm on which I reside as aforesaid). This above described horse, I give and devise to my son Silas Hart, and at the death of wife it is my wish and will that all my real estate be appraised by three good disinterested citizens selected by the executors hereafter named in this will who shall proceed under oath to make appraisement of all my lands at the time agreed upon by said executors, at its true value at the time of said appraisement. It is my will and desire that my lands and its proceeds go to all my ten chidren, hereinafter named equal portions and portion alike to each child, male and female each and all receiving equal amounts of my landed estate. It is my further will that my land shall not be sold but that my four sons, Cephus Hart, Robert Hart, Miles Hart and Silas Hart take the lands at its appraisement and each one portion and portion alike and pay to my daughters their full portion in money as follows to wit: My second daughter, Esther, intermarried with Andrew Walters, the one-tenth part of the appraisement in two years from the time the land is appraised without interest and that the money be paid to my executors and that they lay out the money for land to the best advantage and obtain a deed in the name of my daughter for her own use during her life and at her death that the same go in fee to her children, each child receiving an equal portion of the same, and in the same manner and time to pay to Eleanor Hart, intermarried with A. M. Bryan, the one full tenth part of said appraisement. And that in the seven years from and after the said appraisement, that my four above named sons pay the one full tenth part of said appraisement without interest to Catherine Hart, intermarried to Andrew F. Ault, the like amount in the same way to Margaret Hart, wife of Samuel Lindsay, and to Olevia Hart, wife of James Twinem, and Thurza Hart, wife of John Twinem, all at the same time and the same amounts. But it is further my will that my daughter Thurza and John Twinem, her husband receive their portion in Land at the appraisement price, if they request it at the time of appraisement. It is my will that if anyone or more of my daughters and their husbands should prefer taking as their portion and in lieu of their portion of my estate of land, on of the fractional quarter sections I own in Defiance County, Ohio, they may have the option of receiving it in full as their portion of my estate and they may have possession of the same after 1st day of April A.D. 1851, whether God spares my life or not. One of the fractional tracts contains one hundred and thirty-four acres, more or less, the other quarter in the said County of Defiance, one hundred and sixty acres, more or less, which any one or two of my duaghters may select. But should my daughter Esther with the said Andrew Walters take her apportionment of my estate, the land in that event shall go to the said Esther and her children, after her death, she having the full and entire control of the same during her life as foresaid. And lastly, I do hereby make and appoint my oldest son Cephus Hart and my son-in-law, John Twinem executors of this my last will and testament. 3. CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BELMONT COUNTY, OHIO and REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS Edited and Compiled by Hon. A. T. McKelvey, "History is Philosphy Teaching by Examples." 1801-1901, Published by Biographical Publishing Company, George Richmond, President C. R. Arnold, Treasurer, Chicago, Illinois. 1903 page 772 MILES HART, one of the well-known and popular citizens of Smith township, who for 28 consecutive years followed teaching in Belmont County, comes of an old agricultural family, which originated in the person of his grandfather Miles Hart, in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Our subject was born January 24, 1844, in Smith township, and is a son of Silas and Sarah (Twinem) Hart, the latter of whom was born in 1816, in the State of New York, a daughter of Leonard and Mary Twinem, who came from Ireland to Belmont County about 1817. Mrs Hart died at the old home just north of Centreville. Silas Hart, was born in 1817, in Smith township, and was a son of Miles Hart, who came to Belmont County in 1815 and stopped first in Mead township at Dillie's Bottom and then settled permanently on section 28, in Smith township, where he died in 1852. Silas Hart died in the spring of 1894, at the home of his son Miles. Our subject is one of a family of seven children born to his parents, three of whom besides himself survive, namely: Catherine (Mrs Barrett), of Texas; Leonard, a resident of Goshen township; and S. W., of Smith township. Cephas and Hamilton are deceased, and a daughter died in infancy. In 1878, Mr. Hart was married to Mary C. Stonebraker, who was born in Smith township in 1860, being one of five children born to Jeremiah and Mary (Glover) Stonebraker, the three survivors being: James W of Smith Township, Eliza J (Mrs McCann) of Richland Township, and Mrs Hart. Those deceased were: John T and Margaret, the wife of D M Scatterday. Three children have been born to Mr and Mrs Hart, one of whom died in infancy. Of the two young ladies, Sarah is the successful teacher of a school near Martin's Ferry, and Blanche is still a student. Mr Hart has taken an active interet in politics in his locality, voting the Republican ticket, and has been called upon to serve in many offices, his intelligence, education, and excellent judgment making him eminently desireable as a township or county official. By appointment he served one year as township clerk and was elected and re-elected serving with the greatest efficiency. In the latter "seventies" he served for two years as assessor. The religious connection of thefamily is with the Concord Presbyterian Church, of which Mr Hart is the clerk of the congregation. Mr Hart's long associations as an educator make him a very well-known resident of Smith Township, and few citizens are so highly regarded by all classes of people. As a teacher,he was brought into such close relations that his interest in many of his neighbors began in childhood and a mutual regard has ever since been maintained. He has a wide circle of attached friends. He was elected a member of the Board of Education, and served with credit for a term of three years.

    3. hardin co From: [email protected] Incidentally, there are fifty-six Harts indexed in "Two Centuries in Elizabethtown and Hardin County Kentucky," and three in "Haycraft's History of Elizabethtown." "Two Centuries..." includes: John, John (another), John H., John Wilson and Jonathan. All of them were born in the 1800's, most children or grandchildren of Henry Hart, Jr. his father was Henry, Sr. But one John Hart stands out: p. 451) "Many settlers from Pennsylvania were moving down into the new lands in western and southwestern *Virginia*. JOHN HART, a hunter, piloted a party to the land which had been granted Benjamin Border (92,500 acres) about 1734. The land, known as Borden's Grant, was sold to settlers and was pretty well taken up within a few years. The surveying was finished in December 1738." also a John Hart, not indexed, who was listed in the 1810 census of Hardin County. He would have been born somewhere between 1765 and 1785, according to the numbers: JOHN HART Household 1 free white male under age 10 1 free white male age 10 to 15 1 free white male age 26 to 44 1 free white female age 16 to 25 Hart heads of household in the 1810 census: Moses Hart, Isiah [Isaiah?] Hart, and Aaron Hart. On the 1800 census for Hardin Co, Kentucky, there is a Josiah Hart, name only, no details. But I understand the 1800 census was a sloppy effort at best; several people were not accounted for. Many Hardin residents moved back and forth from surrounding counties, Meade and Breckinridge. >From p. 449 in "Two Centuries in Elizabethtown and Hardin County, Kentucky," "Samuel Haycraft in his 'History of Elizabethtown' wrote in describing the early settlers in Severns Valley: 'the forts formed a triangle, equidistant a mile apart. Those forts were subject to frequent attacks by the Indians. Soon after a hardy set of adventurers came in and settled around the forts, consisting of the Millers, Vertreeses, VANMETERS, HARTS, Shaws, Dyers, and others, who assisted in repelling the attacks of the Indians.' "Several branches of the Hart family were in America at very early dates, and it is believed that the ancestors of Silas Hart of this sketch came to Kentucky from Washington County, Pennsylvania. Other Harts were located in Virginia in the 1700's and likely trace to a common ancestor." "Haycraft's History of Elizabethtown": p. 165) "John Ferguson was also a blacksmith -- cut no considerable figure except that he was the grandfather of Usher F. Linder, Esq., at this time [1869] in Chicago. Linder became a lawyer of considerable eminence, was an able debater and sometimes eloquent. He practiced law in Hardin (County) for several years and then left for Charlestown, Ill., in which State he served in the Legislature and was elected Attorney General of the State." Linda

    3. ---------- From: Carl Sherrick <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Clark family Date: Friday, September 11, 1998 2:19 PM I am searching for a connection between my maternal grandfather, Josiah Sage Clark, and the family of Aaron Clark, the son of Abraham Clark, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ann Clark Hart, in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Vol. VII, 1932, pp 89-102, described at some length the move of Aaron Clark and his family to Washington Co., PA, and she detailed as well the names of his children and grandchildren and their families. I had always been told that I was a direct descendant of Abraham Clark through my mother's (Ruth Clark Sherrick) family, but I never saw any authentic genealogical evidence of this. I am trying to trace back from my grandfather, but the data I have are scant, owing to the loss of much evidence during a move of my parents from Carnegie, PA to California. I know that Josiah Sage Clark was born about 1863, married Laura Helen Gerow of Grand Valley, PA, and settled in Mars, PA, where he operated a lumber yard for some years, and built homes and other structures in Butler County. He was killed in a construction accident in 1915, leaving three daughters, Ethel, Ruth, and Althea. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and I assume belonged to the Blue Lodge in Butler County. I know from maps and 1790 census data kindly provided on PAWASHIN-L that the Aaron Clark family most likely lived in Strabane Township in Washington County, although some of the members moved on to Ohio or Arkansas in the early 1800s. If anyone reading this has any further information about the Aaron Clark family, or about Josiah Sage Clark (one of Aaron's children was named Josiah, born between 1782 and 1805), I would very much appreciate hearing from them.
