For those interested in John Hart, the signer...here is a website: www.stepping-stones.com/jhart.html I had heard that he was so hated for signing the Declaration of Independence he had to flee for his life, leaving a sick wife and about 10 children. When he later returned home, his wife had died and his children scattered. The website above tells more about him. =========================== ---------- > From: Rockne H. H. is for Hart and I was raised with the family tradition that we were descended from John Hart, signer of the Declaration of Independence. I never asked for proof as I assumed that a tradition like that would never be forgotten. So it came as a shock to me in 1992, at age 62, when I heard that Aunt Ceil had her doubts. Lucile Nevison Philippi , of Alliance, Ohio, my mother's next to youngest sister, produced a Nevison book in the late 1980's and a Hart book in the early 1990's. Aunt Norma, the youngest of the seven sisters, sponsored a Nevison Reunion near Alliance, Ohio, in September 1992. My wife and I attended and I learned the source of Aunt Ceil's doubt of the John Hart connection. She had bought a book, "John Hart; The Biography of a Signer of the Declaration of Independance," The Pioneer Press, Newfane, Vermont, 1977, and the author,Cleon H. Hammond, noted that there were Pennsylvania Hart families which claimed descent but which were not so descended. Aunt Ceil figured that ours was probably one of them. The day after the Reunion, Glennis and I drove our rented car to Pennsylvania. Aunt Ceil has given us the address of her cousin Evelyn Hart McClearn in Stoneboro. Neither Evelyn nor her daughter, who also dropped in, had heard of the John Hart tradition. (They had heard that we were descended from Sir Frances Drake, but that is another story.) With two strikes against the tradition, I took the John Hart biography back to Honolulu and read it. I t contained many lists of descendants. It told how everyone was named for someone in the family. I tablulated their first names and compared them with the first names of our Harts, as contained in Aunt Ceil's Hart book. The intersection of the two sets of names was hard to find. Strike three! If that wasn't enough, James Hart, whom Aunt Ceil named as our earliest known ancestor, was of such an age that, if descended, he would have had to be a grandson of the signer. The grandchildren appeared to be well known and there was no James among them. That was my introduction to genealogy. It was tough to take; I had thrived on this tradition. But abandoning cherished myths is part of growing up. In the years since I have identified my real direct ancestors, all 134 of them. I hope that my descendants will have more satisfaction in knowing the real ones than I did in knowing the pretended one. Rock
I am one of those HARTs whose family lore says we are related to the NJ Signer of the Declaration of Independence, but can't prove it. I know there are others out there. Is anyone interested in a maillist on this particular HART subject? Maybe as a group with a common goal, we can help each other with what we have so far, and get closer to finding the truth in our family lore. I am researching three men who are related throght marriage(s) in Union Springs. They were all preachers of the Word. Any help greatly appreciated. The Rev. R.S. WOOD Methodist Church (alive and preaching 1912) The Rev.James HIGHTOWER George C. HART Jr. Baptist Minister ( died ca1887 ) Tom Wicks NJ
I am looking for any information that I can find on my grandfather. His name is Carl P. Hart 1909-1938. Father was John P Hart, mother Laura Wolter. They lived in Chicago. Supposedly Carl was not the biological child of John. Family lore has it that his biological father died when Carl was young, and that John adopted him. We are not sure if that was an official adoption, or if he just assumed his step-father's last name. I have no other information, and would appreciate any information. Anne Barnes
I'm still also interested in hearing anything from anyone who has Anything at all about a man named Harris J. Hartt who was born on September 16, 1816, lived the greater part of his fifty odd years in Madison County, GA and was married to Sarah Bullock. I've been asking this question online for 4 years now and as of yet noone at all has heard of him... I keep asking periodically... any new internet researchers? His father "may" have been an Archibald Hartt who married Polly Berry in Oglethorpe Chounty, GA in or around 1802... thanks... Guy Hart
Technically... the two families are relates, since I'm distantly related to the Mixons and I'm a Hart.... But I checked and I'm related to the Mixon's through the Thompson family of this area. The confusion was because I was thinking of a FTM file I received from a Hart cousin in TX that I'm connected to through her ex husband by way of the Thompsons. So... long story short, they are "related" but at least by my notes, not at that period of time.
I just posted the FTM genrpt on James Vansyckle & Margaret Johnson Descendants and David Albert Kinney & Mary Mowry. Both are NJ families. Some additional surnames mentioned: DALRYMPLE, DENNIS, TINGLEY, HART, LODER, STRUBLE, HOLMES, SEELY, KEEHNER Sandy Hart, RootsWeb Donor http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/5372/
J.-- Hello--- I would like to know more about your HART line that may have gone to Alabama. It is my belief that one of the George HART's came from Georgia. My wife's line is as follows (to the best of our knowledge) beginning with her father: 1. Frank FRAZER HART. b1907 Union Springs,Al d.1992 Ridgewood,NJ 2. James Joel HART b.1884 Bullock Cty,Al? d.1912 Union Springs 3. Lola Hogan FRAZER b.1885 Union Spirngs d.1935? Calif. 4. George C. HART, Jr. Baptist Minister m. 1 Dec 1881 5. Mattie Virginia HIGHTOWER 8 George C. HART, Sr. 9. DORN We have not been able to locate the HART line around Union Springs before 1912. Yes, there was a marriage. But where did the HART's life. Was it outside the town. Also it is now known when the HART's arrived in Unio Springs. Any help greatly appreciated [email protected] wrote: > > I'm not sure where they came from, but there were families of Paulk, Frazier, > and Hart in Wilkinson and Twiggs County GA in early 1800's. I am interested to find any family line connections between the HART AND MIXON lines in Alabama specifically in Bullock County. The period I'm interested in is from the 1830's thru 1920's. Recently I received a posting which suggested they were related lines. My information was there was bad blood between at least two of these lines. Any help greatly appreciated. I have previously posted a note re: HART Duel Union Springs 02 Mar. 1912. Tom Wicks NJ
The Harts and Mixons were related, not sure what time period and if they were related there or not... but it's a southeastern relation type of thing. I'll check my notes and let you know more of what I know tomorrow... Monday.
Wilsie and other Listers-- I have not yet had the energy or time to type in the full article about the HART / MIXON duel. It happened Sat March 2, 1912 at 10:00pm. Place Union Springs, Bullock County, Al. I'm trying to get some families who were there at the time to identify those in the story or tell me what they have been told from their parents, grandparents or they remember. It was a major event in the town. Also we know very little about the HART family. Where did they live, when did they come to Union Springs, where did they come from, GA? James Joel HART married into a solid line of Union Springs family(s) FRAZER, PAULK, HIGHTOWER, FEIGEN. I have the article but need info from the townspeople. Thanks. Tom Wicks NJ [email protected] wrote: > > Hi - > > Would you please reprint the newspaper info on the duel? Why did the duel > occur? Where did it take place? > > Thanks - Wilsie
to all HART listers-- My quick entry of the event, the "duel" left out some important information. The event took place in the town of Union Springs, county Bullock, Alabama. I thank those who asked for clarification. The article is somewhat long and I entered what material I thought would interest researchers.. the surnames. I think I was wrong the stroy was not that of an everyday occurance in 1912. Certainly it was not the wild west. My interest is that James Joel HART was my wife's and her cousins grandfather. We first heard he died of pneumonia. Later it was a duel at the courthouse steps. Now its a down and dirty gunfight which went from the street, into a store and back to the street with a lot of shots fired. MIXOM carried two guns. My question still is can I connect with any HART's from this line? Any HART's who lived in Bullock county from the early 1800's to 1925. Thanks for any help you can provide. Tom Wicks NJ

Sorry listers-- The"gunfight" as it is described took place around 10:00pm on Saturday, March 2, 1912. It was in the Friday addition of the paper. Paper not identified. I was just given the clipping. James Joes HART was after M.W. MIXON. Since it is said, MIXON was/or might have been fooling around with his wife". The towns people were afraid and the men cleared the streets when the two HART and MIXON were in town. Tom Wicks NJ W.
