I've "rescued" an old photograph of Henry Horace HARRISON which was taken at the J. H. Proctor Studio in Hastings, Minnesota. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Henry likely in his 20's at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this may be a photograph of Henry Horace HARRISON b. 3 Dec 1866 in Ravenna, MN to parents Ezekiel HARRISON and Clarinda ORR. Henry married Mary Abigail TANDY on the 25th of Dec 1889. Henry died in January 1960. In 1880, Henry was living with his parents and siblings in Ravenna, MN with census records indicating the following: Ezick HARRISON, age 51, born in England, a Farmer was living with his wife, Clarade HARRISON, age 45, born in OH, to PA born parents. Living with the couple were 9 children including: Floror age 23, born in OH (female) Newton age 22, born in OH Cyrus age 19, born in OH Hiram age 14, born in MN Henry age 13, born in MN Marion age 12, born in MN Jemin age 11, born in MN (female) Viola age 8, born in MN Benjamin age 6, born in MN Also living with the family was Samuel ORR age 82, born in PA and likely Clarinda's Father, noting that his parents were also born in PA. A laborer was also living with the family on the farm at the time, Edward QUIN age 60, born in Ireland. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with the family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

It is interesting that there are Van Houtens in the family back in 1715 when one married a Doremus. Please let me know if it is the same family. I will reseach this also. All of my info is from typed info that my aunt left to her daughter and passed to me at her death. So know one to validate anything here. I haven't looked in the side to your family yet but that is promising to have more relations and family out there. Lets see where all of this will take us.

Have you seen the "post-em" note on the family tree listing for John Personett on the Cole and Gillman Family Tree? Sandra, the author, states she has a letter from John and Fannie to her sister, Susan and husband, James Van Houten. (I have just sent her an e-mail) First I heard of a sister. She was b. 1810, m. Orange in 1832. Think she may be the other 20-30 y.o. in 1830 census with John. I figure they must be related to a Harrison in Caldwell or Orange and have been working my way through the census, looking for families that are right age, etc. etc. So far have narrowed my list down to Jabez of Caldwell, and in Orange, Joel, Stephen, Abraham, Moses and Jacob. If anyone can eliminate any of the above, it might help. All were b. abt 1770-80 and had other children about right age, names unknown.

Leaves This came across one of my mail lists and I thought it may be helpful. Kathy Harrison harris@livingonline.com When this you see, remember me --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How To Read A 200-Year-Old Document and Other FAQs In reading newspapers, books and magazines from the 18th Century you will invariably notice that an "f" is apparently used where there should be an "s." For instance, the word "vessel" is printed as "veffel," the word "same" appears as "fame" and "castle" becomes "caftle." Because of the confusion encountered by readers new to 18th Century documents, we have asked three individuals knowledgeable in the history of typography to render their views on the subject. Their explanations follow: "The Long S is a legitimate form of "S." See the American Heritage Dictionary "S" entries. The Long S is similar to a lowercase f but the horizontal stroke does not go through the top of the letter. The long s still survives in German (or at least it was available when I studied German). German has an uppercase S, a lowercase long f and a lowercase s. "The Rules Are: "Regular uppercase S; "Terminal lowercase s and medial s under certain conditions; initial long f and medial long f." "Examples: "In the 1791 Bradford edition of Thomas Paine's Common Sense, the Introduction reads: "Perhaps the fentiments contained in the following pages are not yet fufficiently fathionable to procure them general favor...." "You will note that both fentiments and pages end with a normal lowercase "s" and both fentiments & fufficiently have an initial lowercase long f." - Richard Irby The symbol "s" was not an "f" although it looked like one. The long s letter can better be described as an "f" without the crossline traveling through the vertical line. The crossline only extends to the right of the vertical line. Also, the long s was never used at the end of a word or to denote the possessive or to pluralize. Since handwriting was considered an art form, the placement of the long s depended on what the"clark" felt would be visually pleasing to his audience. In a hand-written document, the top of the long s looked like the lower case fS." - Lawrence Davis
