    1. Harrisons and Barnes ca 1720-1740 MD & VA
    2. Hi Judy, To start with, what's the book you refer to on the 5 generations of Harrisons? I haven't run across it... Which Barnes names do you have? I'll have to dig thru some notes on the connections. I also have Herefords connected with both Barnes and Harrison--have you run across any Herefords? Would you mind sending me what you have on the Stafford Co Harrisons? It's the same place my info relates to--though again, I'm not sure that I'm related, and if I am, it's collateral! I think what I was referring to was an Anne Barnes and a Francis Osborne Barnes who married a Burr and a Cuthbert Harrison, respectively. Are these the same Harrisons as the Stafford branch or we dealing with a different Burr and Cuthbert? thanks for any help--making a Family Tree Maker file on the Barnes family and trying to sort them all out... 3. I am interested in exchanging information on the family of Thomas HARRISON, b. 1817, probably Tazewell Co., VA and his second wife, Julia Ann PEERY, b. 1825, probably Cabell Co., VA/WVA. Thomas m. 1st Elizabeth PEERY in Lawrence Co., KY in 1836, and was in Audrain Co., MO by 1839. They had Calvin, Matilda, Sarah. After Elizabeth's death in 1843, Thomas remarried to Julia Ann, and they lived in Callaway Co., MO. They had Crockett, Andrew, James, Miram, Margaret and Louisa. Thomas was probably a son of Thomas HARRISON and Rebecca PEERY, of Tazewell County, VA, and brother of Ca.lvin HARRISON, who appeared enumerated next to him in the 1840 census of Audrain Co., MO. Court records prove Thomas and Rebecca had sons named Thomas and Calvin, who went to Missouri in 1839. Calvin m. first Elizabeth TALLEY in Howard Co., MO, then Margaret MARTIN, in Callaway Co., MO. He died about 1847. Eric Newsom

    3. If anyone has written me more than a week ago concerning my new list of more than 850 HARRISON/RUCKER or BAILEY names, I don't have your message. Two days ago, more than 24,000 of my email messages just disappeared without warning. Much of my address book is still intact but I don't know who sent what since I haven't spent much time here in the past 4 months. The entire work of a dear friend who spent months putting all the names handed to me at my Daddy's memorial service Dec. 30, 1998, has also disappeared. I do hope she has another copy. Several friends had "adopted" some of my names and already made connections. I don't know who has what or the connections made anymore. I haven't been able to stay online for more than a minute at a time the past two weeks. It is believed my computer was hit by a lightning storm about that time. I wasn't home and hopefully, it wasn't on. We have had some office help recently but it seems she quit yesterday. It just now dawned on me, we may have been coming too close to the truth of what happened to my computer during that storm. My ISP told me, "All it has to be is plugged in during a storm and it can be knocked out." Except for not being able to stay online, everything seemed fine until yesterday. Please don't inundate me with messages right now. My Mother had a mild stroke last week and I haven't had time for email. But please remember that I don't have your message if we have a connection. With Becky's permission, I will send my newest list of names to the HARRISON-list when my hard working BOJU sends them to me again. Thanks for understanding and prayers. 3. I forwarded a post from the EUBANK-L list today, not realizing that Linda had not left her address on the post. The post below will clear that up. Sorry for the omittance. Regards, Paul FOLLOW UP MESSAGE: I received about a dozen e-mails this morning all asking the same question so I know that I was not clear in my post yesterday. If you forwarded my message about the WWI draft cards being at the GA NARA branch will you please also forward this message? The original draft card applications (registrations) for every state (the entire US) are at East Pointe. According to the Archive Staff there are no plans to split these cards and move any of them to any other NARA location since East Pointe has been charged with the "custody" of these records. It is only the original cards that are in state / county / alpha order. Someone posted a message to one of the lists that NARA was planning on re-filming the cards since they are now in state / county / alpha order. If such a thing is underway it is unknown to the East Pointe archive staff and they should know if such a thing was in the works. If you request a copy of your ancestor's draft card from any NARA branch other than this one they will be searching the LDS microfilm and you will have to know the state and draft board for them to make a copy. It is only at the East Pointe location that you can request a copy by state and then county and the copy will be made from the ORIGINAL card. If I'm still unclear please let me know. 1. Re: NARA files - WWII
    2. Paul Roth
    3. This is from the EUBANK-L List: Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on. Linda

I have looked at the NY (Brooklyn) WW I Draft cards at the NY NARA. Those had the counties divided into numerous Election Districts (or draft districts). I found my grandfather's two brothers but still seek him. Is the set by the "Friends of the National Archives", a separate set of files? By the way, for those who thought all military records were lost in the St. Louis fire a decade or so ago, somebody located a warehouse of duplicate records. The last I read, they were in the process of sorting them. Mike Mc Looking for Mary Harrison b. 1864-65 Kings Co. (Brooklyn) NY, to Edward Harrison of Wales and Catherine Teresa McCormick of NY.

    3. Hi Bev, Your William Harrison from "Sura" NC may have been from Sauratown. I would think it more likely, though, that your "Sura" is actually "Surry" Co., NC--not to far from Sauratown, and a hot-bed of unclaimed, misplaced, and unidentified Harrisons in late 1700-early 1800 (See below) By the early decades of the 1800's, much of the good land was farmed-out in this area. Sons who did not inherit good "bottom land" often "Went West" to TN, AL, MS and MO. There are a good number of compilations of Surry Co., NC records out there. If you haven't done so, I would try them and see what happens. 3. Hi all, To confuse the Tyree Harris/Harrison issue, I've got a Tyree Harrison b. 1784 Spartanburg Co., SC. Tyree died in 1834 Spartanburg Co., SC, and his widow, Elizabeth, went to Oxford, Alabama with several of their children. Tyree Harrison was the son of ROBERT HARRISON b. ~1755, who just happened to be in Surry Co., NC in the 1770's with father WILLIAM HARRISON, along with BARZILLA HARRISON, JOSEPH HARRISON, and a number of the sons of JOHN HARRISON & SARAH DANIELS. After the revolution, many of these Harrisons left Surry Co, NC for Spartanburg, Greenville, and Pendleton Co., SC. Like you, I have been trying to connect the SC, NC, & VA Harrisons to no avail. Only the Hampton/Harrison line in Spartanburg has been traced back to VA, and no sign of my ROBERT HARRISON/WILLIAM HARRISON. Anything here ring a bell with anybody?
