Benjamin Harrison (1833-aft 1887) He was the son of John Scott Harrison, and grandson of William Henry Harrison, ninth President of the United States and was born at North Bend, Hamilton Co., Ohio, August 20th, 1833. He was educated at Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, where the thoroughness which has characterized his after life exhibited itself in a marked degree. He graduated, with high honor, in 1852, and immediately after began the study of law with Judge Bellamy Storer and Abraham Gwynne, of Cincinnati. Subsequently in 1854, he located at Indianapolis, Indiana, and entered upon that brilliant professional career which has since won him so prominent and conspicuous a place among the foremost men of theAmerican Bar. In 1860 he was elected Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Court of the State, for a period of four years, but because of his absence in public service, he was permitted to hold the place less than one half his term. In 1864, although still absent, he was unanimously renominated by his party for the place and he was reelected. In 1876 he ran for Governor but was defeated by a small plurality. Two years later President Hayes appointed him a member of the Mississippi River Commission and in the following year he was elected to the United States Senate, taking his seat March 4th, 1881. His career in the Senate, guided by a high moral standard has greatly enhanced the general respect and esteem in which he is held by his colleagues, for his legislative ability and legal attainments. For many years he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis. His love for children and his interest in youth have also made his face familiar in the Sunday school room. Elias Harrison, D.D. (1790-1863) He was the son of Thomas and Nancy (Osborn) Harrison, and was born in New York City, January 22d, 1790. He entered New Jersey College in 1812 and was Tutor from 1814 to 1816. He studied theology at Princeton and was licensed by New Brunswick Presbytery. Soon after he was ordained by Baltimore Presbytery, in 1817, and installed pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Alexandria, Virginia. This was his only charge. Here he labored faithfully and zealously forty-six years. He died, February 13th, 1863. Dr. Harrison was a very learned man, modest, unassuming, unostentatious and conscientiously attentive to all his duties as a Christian minister. Jephtha Harrison, D.D. (1795-1863) He was the son of Abijah and Sarah (Ogden) Harrison, was born in Orange, New Jersey, in December, 1795; educated at New Jersey College, and studied theology at Princeton Seminary. He was first settled over the churches of Fincastle and Salem, Virginia, where he labored for three years. He removed to Memphis, Tennessee, being the first pasto of the First Presbyterian Church in that city, where he was for six years, thence to Florence, Alabama, where he was pastor four years. He was agent for the Board of Domestic Missions one year, then pastor of the Church in Aberdeen, Mississippi, four years. He next removed to Burlington, Iowa, and after four years spent with this people he removed to Fulton, Missouri in 1858, and supplied Auxvasse Church, and at the time of his death , October 30th, 1863, was stated supply of Round Prairie and Augusta Churches, in Calloway county, Missouri, within the bounds of Missouri Presbytery. He was not brilliant, but a plain faithful gospel preacher, always ready and anxious to work for Christ. Rev. Joseph Cabell Harrison (1793-1860) He was the son of Robert C. and Annie (Cabell) Harrison, and was born at Clifton, Cumberland County, Virginia, May 27th, 1793. In 1806 his parents removed to Fayette county, Kentucky where his education was received, under the care of friends, Messrs. Blythe, Moore and McAllister. He subsequently attended Transylvania University, but did not graduate. He pursued his theological studies under Robert Bishop, D.D.; was licensed by West Lexington Presbytery, October 6th, 1824, and ordained by the same Presbytery, May 31st, 1826. He entered upon his labors as a missionary in the Green River country. In the Autumn of 1830 he spent three months as a missionary agent in Illinois; in 1833, he also founded Burlington, Richwood and Mount Horeb churches, Kentucky; in 1837, giving up Lebanon in Grant county, including Hopewell and Carmel churches, Ohio; in 1835 he confined his laobrs to Burlington and Richwood churches, and the destitutions of Boone county, Kentucky, where he resuscitated several feeble churches. In 1845 he was stated supply of Ebenezer Church, Kentucky, and thus he labored, year after year as a missionary. During the latters years of his life he was at times without any special charge. These years he devoted to labors among the poor, for which he was eminently qualified. The northern part of Kentucky at the time, 1833, was destitute of Presbyterianism, and as a pioneer preacher, he diligently labored in the cause of Sabbath Schools, and Temperance, as well as preaching the gospel. In 1824 he was co-editor with John Breckinridge, D.D., of The Western Luminary, published at Lexington, Kentucky. He died September 7th, 1860. - ---------------------------------------- Queries A pr 22 1997 , seamouse@ix.netcom.com , PAT Does anyone know anything about a school called Wright . Hi List: I will try again, but my hopes are waning. My husband's grandfather, Robert Peyton Harrison/Peyton Robert Harrison, was killed in a levee accident in October 1888 in Vicksburg, MS. His wife was Hattie Louise Barnes Harrison. They had two children, Louise Harrison, b. ca 1882 and Robert Peyton Harrison born May 1886. When the older Peyton died, the children went to live with their grandmother, Eliza Nailor Barnes and then later with their aunt Elsie Barnes Hullum and her husband, Lewis Hullum. The newspaper account of the accident, said that Peyton came to Vicksburg "about 15 years ago from Greeneville, SC." Now, that is the sum of our knowledge about the Harrisons. Hattie Barnes Harrison was from Port Gibson, MS and I think we can find information on her, but Peyton is the most important right now. Can anyone help? Jean Harrison
Hi Everyone, I am a California HARRISON, but am afraid I don't know anything about the other CA HARRISONS that were mentioned earlier. My HARRISON brick wall is Samuel HARRISON, bn. 10 March, 1821 (date from age on tombstone in Brown Co., WI) in England. I haven't been able to find any info. on where in Eng. he was born or his parent's names in Canada or the US. The first info. I have for him is his marriage to Susan BRIGHTON in May, 1842 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada (this info. from Civil War pension papers). They go to Buffalo, NY where Samuel joins the US Army in July, 1842 for 5 yrs. They may have lived at the Buffalo Barracks. They have Mary Elizabeth in 1843 and Henry Albert, in 1844 in Buffalo. The last part of Samuel's Army service is during the Mexican-American War. He is discharged in Mexico in July, 1847. Son, John James, is born in Mackinac, MI in Dec., 1847 (there was an Army base there also). Samuel received a military land warrant for his 5 yrs. service and used it to buy land in De Pere, Brown Co., WI. Four more children were born there: Richard Edward 1849, Harriet Sophia 1851, Annetta Maria 1853 and Sarah Louette 1855. When the Civil War started Samuel joined the Army again. He was wounded at the Battle of Corinth, MS and died from gangrene after his leg was amputated. There were articles in the Green Bay, WI papers, but nothing biographical. The only other Harrison I can find that I know must be related is a John Harrison, age 50, bn. England, who was on the 1870 census of De Pere next door to Susan Harrison, Samuel's widow. John's wife was Sarah, age 49. Can't find any other info. on him either. So I have been stuck on these HARRISONS for many years. If anyone has any info. they can share, I will be most grateful and will gladly share any other info. I have. Thank you. Carol Harrison Carol H726@aol.com
My Harrisons are a brick wall, too. I am seeking information about JOSHUA HARRISON. He was born around 1810, in Virginia, and moved to Ohio in approximately 1835. Joshua's son, John, was born in Knox County, so I'm hoping Joshua was there too. Joshua worked as a miller. He was a white man, and his wife, Ellen, was African-descended. Joshua's son, John, moved to Sandusky County, Ohio. He married Nancy Jackson, a full blooded Native American, probably Cherokee. Their son, Charles, moved to Allen County. He married Daisy Bishop, and they gave birth to four daughters (whew!). Does anyone know anything about Joshua? Sally Watts Haithman
Hi I am trying to get information on my Elias Harrison. He was born about 1770 possibly in TN and died on 5 Sept 1836 in TN. He married Nancy Hail Kizzee on 19 Aug 1824 In Pulaski County, KY. His name appears as Harris on the marriage record. I have no information about his parents. He had 4 children that I know of. Mary Ann, Catherine J., Benjamin Franklin Harrison, and Martha (my line), Martha was born in Clairborne County TN and married Thomas Hail. Nancy's first husband was George Kizzee who died in the War of 1812. I believe that Elias may have been a minister. Ben Franklin Harrison served in the civil war. That's all I know about this Harrison

Hi Everybody, How about sending in your HARRISON family info to this list so I can get an idea about who everybody is looking for and where. I just might happen to stumble on them during my searching. I'm researching many of my lines besides Harrisons, all over the US, Ontario and Quebec, Canada. Are there any California HARRISONs out there? Or Harrisons researching in Grundy Co., IL or York co., Nebraska areas? Need to find the identity of Mr. _?_ HARRISON who was probably born in Nova Scotia, Canada., and was living in California in the 1880s. Probably in Fresno Co. He was probably born in the 1830-1850 time span. He died before the 1900 census. Thanks, Joanne in CA

Hi! Thanks, Carol, for answering my query! I thought that I had covered almost all the bases on Mary SMITH HARRISON, but see that I neglected to give some important info so I'll add it below: Mary SMITH was born about 1845 in Ormstown, seven siblings, including at least four brothers. She was the daughter of Patrick SMITH and Catherine COUGHLIN, both born in Ireland. She left sometime after the 1871 Canadian census. Brothers include: Patrick SMITH, b.abt 1842 in QUE, settled in Verona, Grundy Co, IL.; Thomas settled in York, NEB. by 1918, possibly earlier. Michael b. 1850, QUE. died in 1905 in San Francisco, CA James died in QUE in 1918.. The obituary of her brother James (died in Canada), indicates that she was still alive and in Fresno in Feb 1918. Her brother Michael ended up in San Francisco. Michael's obituary in Aug 1905 says his sister was Mrs Mary HARRISON of Fresno. From the 1900 census of Fresno County, Third Township Mary HARRISON was a widow with 3 living children and came to Us in 1877. She had 2 children living at home Alicia aged 18 and Katie aged 14 both born in California. The other child may be a son, name and sex is unknown. Their father, Mr. ___?____ HARRISON, according to the census, was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. They may have been married in Quebec, or met and married in the USA. I would especially like to find any descendants and also any and all possible information about her husband, Mr. __?__ HARRISON, including of course, his first name. I am now going to 'unsubsribe' and 'resubscribe' on the Digest mode. Should have done that at at the start! Thanks!!!!!!!! Joanne in CA at erictem@earthlink.net
Hello! I'm new to the list as of today! I'm looking for two very separate HARRISON lines. 1. My great grandfather Nacy (Nasa?) Harrison JONES b 1817 in Indiana. Lived Parke Co., IN.in 1838. His mother was 'Mary' born VA abt 1782. She died in Will Co.(?) IL, 1 Sept. 1867. Mary was said to be a 'HARRISON from VA'. Her husband James JONES died 16 June 1848 and I don't know where he was born or where they lived. Due to the common names I haven't been able to positively identify them on any census. 'Nacy' may have moved to Parke Co as an adult, or he may have been born there. 2. Mary SMITH HARRISON. Born in QUE, Canada around 1845-50. Birth year from census info varies. She was in Fresno, CA on 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 census---always a widow. Who was Mr. HARRISON??? Mary had four brothers: Patrick SMITH, b.abt 1842 in QUE, settled in Verona, Grundy Co, IL.; Thomas settled in York, NEB. by 1918, possibly earlier. Michael b. 1850, died in 1905 in San Francisco, CA James died in QUE in 1918. . Three children: Alicia b. 1882 and Kate b. 1886 I need to know what Mary SMITH HARRISON's husband's name was. Also dates of death and burial places for both Mary and ___?___ HARRISON. This is an ongoing search of many years. Thank you. Any info will be appreciated. Joanne in CA at erictem@earthlink.net

It has been pointed out to me, that despite my careful proofreading, I made an error in my email of 4 Oct concerning Hannah Harrison, d/o James and Mary. Right below James and Mary, I wrote "issue of John and Mary". I meant James. I don't think John had anything to do with this. I apologize if I've thrown anyone off with this mistake.
