    2. Kathy Ellis
    3. Desperately need help in finding the family of my greatx grandfather, GEORGE C. HARRISON, born in Virginia about 1820-1825. The only clue I have is that from family history he was said to be a descendant of relatives of the Presidential Harrisons. He named his only son WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON so this may have been a family name. Have not been able to pin him down in any census data. 1. GEORGE C. HARRISON, b-1820-25 in VA, d-4/1/1862 (died in Civil War near Richmond, VA) md MISSOURI A. BROWN on 5/24/1858 in Lunenburg Co., VA His occupation was carpenter. .... 2. 1. Mary Harrison JONES
    2. Joanne/erictem
    3. Thanks for your answer. Wish I knew more. Mary Harrison JONES was my gr gr grandmother. All I know about her are short entries in the family bible that she was born 1783. The 1860 Will Co IL census she says she was 77 and born in VA. She was living with her son, my gr grandfather, Nacy Harrison JONES at that time. Clues: Nacy was born 1817 in IN(?) (census info) Nacy JONES died 1876 so don't have the benefit of the 1880 census for parent's b.p. info. He was first married in Parke Co IN in 1838, but how long he'd lived there is unknown. Or if any of the James and Mary Joneses living in the area of Parke Co., IN on 1820 census were his parents. Don't know Nacy's siblings' names, if any. I had info from Gen & Hist Soc of Parke Co IN on the records for James JONES (there were several) but none of the info seemed to fit. Mary (HARRISON) JONES died 1 April 1867 in IL, I suppose. Don't know her parents, or siblings or burial place. Nacy and small sons and first wife were buried in Willmington, IL cemetery but can't locate a stone for Mary or James there. James JONES died 1848--so I don't know where he was born, or died or is buried. Yes, there are hundreds of James JONES---thousands--and before 1850 census it's almost impossible to identify which one is the one I need! I have given up on these folks over and over and over again. Thanks for your interest and for answering my query! Joanne in CA

    3. Hi Joanne and list, Where in Indiana did they live? My THOMAS HARRISON, who was born VA ca. 1789 according to census, ended up in Jennings Co., Indiana. He married a JAHILA ?, maybe in Ohio, and my g-g-grandmother LYDIA HARRISON was born in the early 1820s in Indiana. She married LYMAN HARRINGTON in the 1840s and they moved to Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, then Illinois. Having a hard time connecting this Thomas with any Harrison family. Melissa

    3. Hello all! Does anyone have a Mary HARRISON who married a James JONES by 1816? First child I know of was born 1817, probably in IN according to census---but who knows, there may have been ones earlier. She was born around 1783 in VA, so it probably wasn't her first child. (Info from 1860 IL census, the only census record I have for her). James died pre 1850 census. Where was she in 1850? I don't have much hope of finding her parents unless she turns up in someone's family group. thanks, Joanne in CA -----Original Message----- From: HARRISON-D-request@rootsweb.com <HARRISON-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: HARRISON-D@rootsweb.com <HARRISON-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, October 28, 1999 1:44 PM Subject: HARRISON-D Digest V99 #210

    3. Hi folks! A while back discovered that my great-great-grandfather, John Gale Wade "Yankee John" Richardson had gone to Rolla, Missouri in 1861 in company with other men from Izard County, Arkansas, to join the Union Army. That group was led north by Capt. L. D. Toney. I recently ran across a reference that suggests that Captain Toney was probably named "Lorenzo Dow Toney" after the famous Methodist preacher. This would also seem to imply that the Toney family were Methodists at this time. A brief search on the web led me to this capsule bio for Reverend Dow which I lifted from a message: Who was Lorenzo Dow, Namesake in many families? >From "History of Methodism in Alabama" by Rev. [Anson?] West, D.D. Chapter 2, pages 27-28-29-30-31-32-33-34. REV. LORENZO DOW Rev. Lorenzo Dow was the first Protestant preacher to preach in any part of the territory that is now Alabama. He claimed to be a Methodist and affiliated with that denomination, but they would not be responsible for him in anything he did. In May, 1803, Rev. Mr. Dow preached to the settlers in the Tombigbee and Tensaw settlements. This was the first preaching ever done in Alabama except by Romish priests However, when these settlements along the Tombigbee were developed, and became safe from the Indians and their claims were ceded to the U.S., heralds of the cross found its people and the voice of the messengers of peace was heard in the wilderness. Rev. Dow described in some of his writings the inhabitants as mostly English, but were like "Sheep without a shepherd," and while it was under Spanish government it was a refuge for bad men. Lorenzo Dow was born Oct. 16, 1777, in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut. He was descended from the English ancestors. He was the subject of early religious impressions. Before he was four years old he expressed himself as "Mused upon God, Heaven and Hell." He was united with a society of Methodists being received into it by Rev. G. Roberts. He claimed Hope Hull as his spiritual advisor. Rev. Mr. Dow made a long and hard struggle against the conviction that 'it was his duty to preach, but at last yielded to the conviction that God had called him to the ministry. He met with strong opposition from his father as to this move and still stronger from the members of the church and when he sought to obtain a license to preach he was discouraged and at first was rejected and sent away. He continued to press his claim and finally admitted on trial September 19, 1898. Ill health prompted him to come South. He was lured by the warm mild climate, and with his wife Peggy, made the long tiresome hazardous trip. The journey was both dangerous and difficult, but to Dow perils were a fascination. In his journals which have been sacredly kept, he tells of these many perils and adventures among the wild tribes he encountered. Any feature of the uncivilized and the wilderness appealed to him. On the stages of the long journey Southward he preferred camping out at night, especially in the piney woods country. Huge piles of a straw was raked up which served as the bed and he would be lulled to sleep by the soothing monotone of the sighing pines. There was also a hope entertained that the resinous regions possessed a curative power for his malady. A singular chapter in his life was a great desire and fancy to preach to the Roman Catholics and hearing Ireland was their greatest stronghold he would thither, but his pathway was not strewn with roses by any means. He requested a leave of absence from the Conference in order to make the trip abroad, but the request was not granted and he took the leave of absence anyway against their advice and entreaties. He consumed about twenty months on this trip, preaching the gospel incessantly and attending camp meetings. Not withstanding he had made the European tour against the authority of the Conference, he resumed preaching on his return and remained on "trial." However, he could not stand the test and his name was soon dropped from the minutes. He was not careful to maintain the relationship with the Conference which he had so eagerly sought. He was sent out on circuit assignments but this did not correspond with the expansive fields of his dreams. He was discontented. In a word he did not consider a circuit his right sphere, and claimed that his connection with the conference was severed. He was never really ordained to the ministry and was without authority to administer sacrament or organize societies. In doctrinal principles he was Methodist, but was without any church influence or allegiance. He was irregular and uncertain. He was a force, but uncertain, unreliable and inefficient. He was restless and he was a dreamer. He was contradictory and never happier than when engaged in a wordy war. He possessed scant learning, but was a very close observer of mankind. The very face of Lorenzo Dow indicated his character. His features were both rough and delicate. It was rough and effeminate but in that face there was every mark of indomitable energy. He parted his hair in the middle and wore it hanging down his neck and shoulders and his face was radiant with kindness. His wife, Peggy, whom he married before coming South, in her writings, "Vicissitudes" gives an account of their first trip coming South and also gives an account of a trip which she made with him passing through the Bigbee settlements in Nov., 1811, from Natchez, Mississippi to Milledgdville, Ga., in the wilderness some forty miles. She says "At night we camped out in lonely deserts, uninhabited by any being except wild beasts and savages." "I was much alarmed and uneasy, but my husband was content and slept sweetly." In giving an account of her first meeting with him she says, "He is a most singular character, and admits himself that he was known by the name of 'Crazy Dow' and called himself 'Son of Thunder'. Despite his ill health he boated that he held off death. He refused to die and said he must live to fight for the Kingdom. He did not believe in founding churches but preferred to preach and praise God in the wilds and in the open. However, a prominent jurist of Alabama, who is closely connected with Lowndes County, claims to have the historical facts that Dow preached from the altar one time if no more. The small church known as "Union" which is nestled in a grove between the small settlements of Burkeville and Manack, Lowndes County, claims the distinction of having him preach there in its early history. The tradition, in part, is that Sam Manac, the half-breed, who founded the latter place and from whom it was named, met Dow during his wanderings through the wilds and led him to that altar. Union Church, now obscure, holds an interesting part in the early history of Lowndes. Dow, the first man who passed the holy words around and around in Alabama, preached there. The Graves family, ancestors of Alabama's ex-governor, worshipped at that alter. Some of which sleep in the nearby churchyard, and it is built in the road that was the route of the through county stage coach line, 'most a hundred years ago. Rev. Dow died February 2, 1834, in Georgetown, D.C., was buried near Washington, but remains were removed and re-buried in Oakhill Cemetery, near Georgetown. He had one son, Neal, who was a Brigadier in the Union Army and author of "Main Law." --- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Limestone AL 322 Athens 1870 HARRISON LORENZO Johnson MO 638 Warrensburg this is the same location where Joseph Harrison and Zilpha Bell migrated and settled there in 1830 from Limestone Co. AL - son Harvey Harrison (Harvey White Harrison) was a Judge there. Some BELL kin moved with them. Some of them moved into Kansas later. Thought I had all of their children and the Lorenzo above is not one of them. Need details of 1860 & 1870 census of Lorenzo might tell us something. A John Harrison was in the War of 1812 in Capt. Fleman Hodges company enlisting at Huntsville, AL. pension # 3870 issued 1871. Several land transactions are in the records of John Harrison with Joseph Harrison, and sold land to Lucas in 1829 (land he got from Joseph) and disappears from the census after 1830 probably removing to IL. Their home in IL was about 2 miles north of Logansport, IL, Hamilton Co. This may be the same John Harrison that married Elizabeth McLung? McClure? in 1818 and Nancy Thomas is his second wife m. 1838. Thomas's Nancy's family lives close by - when they left Limestone stopped in TN and ived there for awhile near her family. Michael Harrison b 1796 in VA dies in 1863 in Whiteside Co. IL , could he be a brother to John above? This Michael went to Fayette OH first don't know if he is in TN or AL before - he has named a son he Michael John - this Michael John m 1859 in IL and d 1906 in Bigelow, Marshall Co. Kansas - he named a son Lorenzo Harrison b ? 1860 ish. Have Michael and Michael John's children no other info.
