    1. HARRISON/BARKER
    2. As a new member of the Harrison listserv, I'm trying to establish a possible Harrison/Barker connection in Brunswick County, VA. Thomas Barker, a brother to my ancestor Burwell, bought land from a Mary Harrison, widow of Thomas Harrison. I am wondering if there was more than just a land transaction. Below are notes from a land sale written by Ms. Georgia Cole of IN, provided be Ms. J. Richards of Huffman, TX. Thomas Barker later deeded several land tracts to his nephew, Thomas L. who lived in Jones Co., GA. Brunswick County, VA DB 20: 348 31 Oct 1804 In consideration of $1. and Thomas Barkers paying to her at end of each year as long as she shall live the just sum of $25. Mary Harrison doth sell unto sd Thomas Barker all her right of dower in plantation sold by Thomas Harrison to James Crichton reserving to herself the use of the two small rooms of the house to the west end of the house which she is at liberty to occupy but not to lease or rent avoiding the taking into it of any persons who may be troublesome and badly disposed etc. Wit: Mary Harrison John Barnes, Jr. Thomas Barker Joseph Holderburg Burwell Barker Brunswick County, VA DB 29: 175 21 March 1831 Thomas L. Barker of the State of Georgia to Robert R. Jones Brunswick County, VA. Land on the east side of Blacks road which sd. land was willed to Thomas L. Barker by his uncle Thomas Barker decd and bounded on the east by the land of Allan Love, on the south by the land of Joseph Travis, by the land of the aforesaid Robert R. According to a GEDCOM my cousin sent, my 4G Uncle has a son named John Battel HARRISON. He was born in Monroe Co., Illinois 4 Nov 1842 and died in the Civil War at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 Jun 1863. John's father was a veteran of the Blackhawk War, Capt. Thomas Harrison. He left Waterloo, Monroe Co., Illinois and moved north to Pleasant Valley, Jo Daviess Co, Illinois with his family (wife: Catherine Elizabeth DeLAUNEY) abt. 1843 or 1844. Anyway, there seems to be a connection. I'm searching for Thomas' parents names, since that will be my 4G grandparents. I'm descended from Capt. Thomas' brother, Obed, who was born Dec 1800 in either Virginia or Ohio. What I have on Obed: he had a twin named Vincent. Obed eventually married (probably at least a 2nd marriage :) ) Martha J. HURT (HART?) LISTER in Pickaway Co., OH, 1 May 1862. I have record of the marriage from the Probate Court, but no parents names are given. They moved to Clayton and then Dubuque Counties in Iowa. They're in Dubuque Co. for the 1870 census. His twin, Vincent, died in Clayton County that year. He had married Rebecca TOMLINSON. Some of Obed and Vin's children later moved to the area where their uncle Thomas was living in Jo Daviess Co., Illinois. Does this sound vaguely familiar to anyone? Help if you can! Thanks.... I trashed the query so don't know who sent it, if any body receives a query re Battael I can now help. In my Harrison line there is a surname BATTAILE and the name was used as a given name in each generation. Eventually that name became Battael and when it was to late to help I found Battael HARRISON on RootsWeb and he is in Becky's Repository. There is a biography for him and if anybody is interested let me know and I can send an attachment. Hopefully this person will get in touch with this list as I recommended, Battael was in Darke Co., Oh., I recommended he contact the list owner there, and I contated both of them and he hadn't contacted them yet. If you have any questions or comments, please email me directly at cheitmann@adtoolsinc.com Chris Heitmann Chief Operating Officer Message from Rootsweb Hi, folks - We've had a lot of reports tonight about a virus being passed around on RootsWeb lists. I have looked into these reports and it does NOT appear that the viruses have actually been sent through our lists. I've included a semi-technical explanation of what I have been able to find out, for those of you who are curious. The only important message here is that RootsWeb's lists are NOT the source of recent virus reports. What seems to be happening is that the current flock of viruses do the following things when they infect a new computer: * The virus sends a copy of itself to everyone in the computer's address book; * It forges its own return address to look like it was sent by someone *else* in the address book; * and it uses the Subject line from a message that was recently sent from that machine. So if an infected person sent mail to BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com, the virus might send out mail like this to someone else in the victim's address book: From: BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com To: joe@example.com Subject: [BUMBLEROTTER] looking for Fred and Wilma Bumblerotter <http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html>http://stuart.messagemates.com/in dex.html Hypercool Happy New Year 2000 funny programs and animations... We attached our recent animation from this site in our mail ! Check it out ! Even though the mail never was sent to RootsWeb, the return address is forged to make it appear as if it came from us. I will continue to work on figuring out if there is anything that we can do about this; in the meantime, please assure any concerned subscribers that subscribing to a RootsWeb list is not dangerous. :-) -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb.com lead system admonsterator and Chief Hacking Officer

    3. - Not EXACTLY Genealogy, but it IS historyand definitely a once in a lifetime happening........Shirley ------------------------------------------------------------------- A Full Moon that Has Not Been Seen in 133 Years. ------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a very special full moon this month that will be very interesting. Be sure to have your cameras ready on the 22nd of this month. *Full Moon on the Winter Solstice* For the first time in the life of anyone around today, we'll see a full moon occur on the Winter solstice, December 22nd, commonly called the first day of Winter. Since a full moon on the Winter solstice occurs in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in its elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth). Since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger, making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly reforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous. On December 21st, 1866 the Lakota Sioux took advantage of this combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush on soldiers in Wyoming Territory. In layman's terms: It will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual, AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years! Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendants 100 or so years from now will see this again. jbass@digital.net 216 Beach Park Lane Cape Canaveral, FL 32920-5003 Home of The *HARRISON* Repository & *MY FAMILY* http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/harintro.htm Our Family WWW: http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/index.htm LINDSAY & HARRISON Surnames & CSA-HISTORY Roots Mail List GENCONNECT: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html Data Managed by beautiful daughter Becky Bass Bonner and me, Josephine Lindsay Bass

This database is a collection of will abstracts in the state between 1660 and 1790. Each entry contains the person filing the will, county of filing, date of will and date of probate. Also provided is the entire text of the will abstract, often containing many family members including, but not limited to, spouse and children. It contains over 2800 entries and about 15,000 names. For researchers of colonial North Carolina ancestors this can be a valuable collection of records. Extended Description: Bibliography: Grimes, John Bryan. Abstracts of North Carolina Wills. 3. Mt second great grandfather was William Henry Harrison from Surry County, North Carolina. The first record I have of him is in Linneus, (Linn Co.) Missouri in 1850 census of tat area. He was about 30 years old at the time, and was a blacksmith living with a Marshall Harrison (a wheelwright). Marshall was some years older and they both gave their place of birth as Surry County, NC. Whether they were brothers, or uncle and nephew, or what I don't know. William signed many documents with an 'X' and in several different documents variously gave different birth years as 1816, 1820, and 1824. All of these documents were official, such as census, military, and retirement records. I am sure he didnt know his own age. Are there any records you may be aware of that would put either of these two in NC? My lineage is as follows: William Henry Harrison John William Harrison Harry Kurtis Harrison Evelyn May Harrison Maurice Edward Arnold I would, and many Harrisons all over Illinois, Colorado, and Oregon will be grateful if you have any info that may help in our quest. We are sure that none remain in Missouri in this line. Ed Arnold

    3. Hi again all, This is another line I am tracing although the Harrison family in this particular case is not directly related to me. They had 8 children: Samuel Goode Harrison; Thomas Harrison; Anna V. Harrison; Francis E. Harrison; Mary Hannah Harrison; Sidney Parham Harrison; Junius Harrison; Eugene Harrison. If you are descended from any of the above people please e-mail me at: suntanr2@worldnet.att.net Thank you! Beth

    1. Re: Our Name
    2. Charles W. Johnson
    3. Your message much appreciated. I have known someabout John Harrison the inventor of the chronometer and a bit about Harris Island, but I suspect that some of my information might be wrong. Maybe you can clarify. There are instances in Harrison research in the US where the names Harris and Harrison are used for the same persons. No doubt some of this in the old records are the goofs of the one recording the deed or census or such, but others come from a Harris yet call themselves Harrison as if they are logically Harrisons since they are sons of a Harris. I have heard an explanation that perhaps they were originally from Harris Island where there was a tradition that those on the island were named Harris but those who left the island automatically ca,,ed themselves Harrison, meaning "son of Harris Island". Is there validity to this explanation? Also, we tend to think of Harrisons as English though from an area very close to Scotland, yet we think of Harris as Scots. Any explanation fro this? Appreciatively yours, Dr. CW Johnson

    1. Our Name
    2. John Harrison
    3. Hello, my name is John Alexander Harrison, and i come from Scotland. Located off the north coast of Scotland, is small Island called, Harris. This island is known for producing the woven fabric commonly known as tweed. ( Harris Tweed ) Harris was the name given to the people with the ability to weave. If you have read the book Longitude, you will know that John Harrison wove together the imaginary lines of longitude with the lines of latitude, with his invention of the chronometer. You will also know that he didn't have much faith in the so called trusty church, and it wasn't until a madman was on the English throne, that justice prevailed in John's favour. If you already know the ancient family moto of the Harrison household, "VINCIT QUI PATITUR," (latin) - meaning " He conquers who endures," you may find that John Longitude Harrison, was one man who knew exactly why he was on this earth, and a man that knew exactly what he was doing. His biggest problem was finding someone as trust worthy as he. Did you know the the name John means, " The Beloved Son of "? What is it that makes your world go around? Longitude was the first book that i ever read from cover to cover. I was searching through the pages of history, searching for someone that resembled myself and the qualities that i posses. I was born in 1967, and when i was a teenager at school, i was a straight A' student in woodwork, top of the metalwork class, and when i left school i went on to train as an engineer as well as a joiner. All this time, i was teaching myself to play musical instuments, and paying particular attention as to what was going on in the world around me. It's a funny old world that we are all living in. The greatest problem that the people in the world have, is not being able to play in time with each other. On the stroke of midnight, on the 31st of December 1999, half of the civilised world will be looking at their watches, counting down to the exact second that time moves forward into the new millennium. Most of the people looking at their watch, don't know where the brains behind their portable precission timepiece came from, and if a man called John Harrison were to ask them for a few seconds of their time, experience tells me that they would tell him to get lost. Thank you for your time in reading this. Thank you also for kepping the name alive. Yours Sincerely John A Harrison ( The Beloved Son Of The Great Weaver)

    1. Alexander HARRISON/Abigail CHANEY 1846
    2. Alexander HARRISON married Abigail CHANEY August 13, 1846 in Seneca County, Ohio. Are these the same people who later lived at DRAKE'S CREEK, Madison County, Arkansas, and had a daughter named Mary Jane HARRISON who married Kimbal Alonzo MOSES? Have lots of information on the MOSES family, but know almost nothing about Abigail CHANEY and Alexander HARRISON other than their marraige date and that Alexander HARRISON was born in Pennsylvania and lived in Henry County, Ohio, at some point. There are several HARRISONS listed owning land in Madison County near where Kimbal's land was located, but don't know if they were related or not, or what the relationship would be. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks. Raye Blackman
