This database is a listing of men who applied for a pension but were rejected. It was originally published in 1852 and was an expanded version of a book published in 1838. Each record provides the applicant's name, state and town of residence, and the reason their petition was denied. It contains the names of over 8600 individuals. 1. [HARRISON] William Harrison of Allegheny Co., PA
    2. Hello! I'm new to this list but have been working on my HARRISON surname for quite a while now. My mother's maiden name was HARRISON, and I am seeking her gr-grandfather, WILLIAM (Henry?) HARRISON, who, according to an article on his son, GEORGE HARRISON (1829-1905) in "Memoirs of Allegheny County", was of Scotch descent, the son of JOHN HARRISON (possibly a coal miner in McKeesport after 1824), but was reared in PA. Then, according to an article on him written in another of the histories of Allegheny County (can't put my finger on it at the moment) it said "The family of Harrison has been represented in Western PA for many years, its original seat being in McKeesport and Port Perry. William Henry Harrison, grandfather of Richey C. Harrison (my grandfather), of Turtle Creek, was a native of Allegheny Co. PA. He was one of the pioneers of Port Perry, where he owned a saw mill on Crooked Run, run by water power, a motive that has almost altogether been supplanted by steam. He married" (Elizabeth ????) and they had, I believe, nine children, among whom was William E., George, Ann, and Walter B. Harrison. My problem - especially since he has the same name as the President of the U.S. - is that I keep getting material on the President when I put in queries about gr-gr-grandpa! Any suggestions? If his first child was born in about 1819, he would have been born sometime before 1800, and possibly as early as 1790. His last child was born in 1834. Elizabeth lived with members of the family in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census reports. (Listed as deaf.) Well, any suggestions that you might have would be appreciated. 1. [HARRISON] Bryans in Settlers by the Long Grey Trail
    2. Jerry Bryan
    3. When other researchers find out that I have a Harrison line, they usually express envy because the Harrisons are so well researched as exemplified by "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" and the Harrison Repository. I have just now been able to borrow a copy of "Long Grey Trail". The copy I have is the 1975 reprint. My paternal line is Bryan, and there are a number of Bryans in "Long Grey Trail". I wish to make some additions, some minor corrections, and some comments concerning the Bryans who are listed in the book. I will denote text from "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" by LGT and my own comments by JB. LGT p. 615 (1259443) NANCY VIRGINIA HARRISON (1876), the daughter of Joseph Harrison (125944), and wife, Susan, nee Slaton, married, October 24 1897,William Hurley Bryan, of Tennessee. He died December 15, 1915. JB: Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison was my g grandmother. She disliked the name Nancy, and was always called Nannie. Her tombstone says Nancy V.(Nannie) Harrison. She was b. 14 Apr 1876, d. 11 Jul 1938. She is buried at the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery in Kodak, Sevier County, Tennessee. Susan Slaton was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George. William Harley Bryan was my g grandfather. He was the son of William Allen Bryan and Malissa E. Underwood. He was always known as Harley. His tombstone says W.H. Bryan, and his death certificate says Harley Bryan. He was b. 12 Feb 1876 in Sevier County, Tennessee and d. 15 Dec 1915 in Sevier County, Tennessee. He was bur. in the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery in Kodak, Sevier County, Tennessee. LGT p. 615 William H. Bryan, and wife Nancy Virginia, nee Harrison had issue — 1. EMMETT ORAL - b. Nov.1, 1898; m 1st, Apr. 9, 1921, Ruby Cox. She died Aug.9 1925. Issue — 1. William Jackson - (living) 2. Lena Maud - b. Oct. 27, 1923. 3. Robert Elmer - b. (living) JB: Emmert Oral Bryan was my grandfather. Note well the correct spelling of his given name. It is very unusual, and I don't know where it came from. He disliked his middle name. His friends his age called him Emmert. But most often, I heard him called Mr. Bryan. He signed his name E.O. Bryan and his mailbox said E.O. BRYAN. He was b. 1 November 1898 in Sevier County, Tennessee and d. 12 Nov 1978 in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. Ruby Priscilla Cox was my grandmother. She was b. 18 Jul 1903 in Jefferson County, Tennessee and d. 9 Aug 1925 in Morristown, Hamblen County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Retta or Rett) Nichols. Rett Nichols was 12 years old when she was married and 14 years old when her first child was born. Ruby Cox died shortly after my father was born (although not from childbirth), and my father was raised by an aunt until my grandfather remarried. William Jackson Bryan is known as Jack. He has been the chief family genealogist, with extensive Bryan and Cox family histories which I have inherited. He also knows where all the family members lived (including the Harrisons) in Jefferson County and Sevier County, Tennessee. He married Florence Marie Brown, and they had four sons. Lena Maud Bryan was b. 27 Oct 1923, d. 13 Oct 1994, and m. 23 Apr 1941 Louis Charles (Louie) Truan, Jr. They had a son and two daughters. She was described in "The Nichols Book" by Wyatt Nichols as being a typical Nichols woman, petite and pretty. She was usually called Lena Maud, although she didn't like her middle name because nearly every mule in the county was named Maud or Old Maud. She preferred to be called Lena. Robert Elmer Bryan, known as Bob is my father. He married Beatrice Ruth Peters, and they had two sons and a daughter. LGT p. 615: m: 2nd, Nov 26, 1927, Ella Kate Nottingham. JB: Ella Kate Nottingham was b. 3 Jan 1900, d. 14 Dec 1976. They had issue Bonnie Jo Bryan. Bonnie Jo Bryan m. Jarrel Johnson. LGT p. 615: LYDIA ETHEL - b. Feb. 25, 1902; m. Aug 10, 1919, ELMER COX. Issue - 1. Clara Kathleen - (living) JB: Lydia Ethel Bryan was usually known as Ethel, although a few people called her Lyddie. Elmer Cox was Robert Elmer Cox, although he was always known as Elmer. Robert Elmer Cox was b. 14 Mar 1901 and d. 12 Nov 1981. Emmert Oral Bryan and Lydia Ethel Bryan were brother and sister. Ruby Priscilla Cox and Robert Elmer Cox were first cousins. So their respective children were first cousins as Bryans and second cousins as Coxes. Clara Kathleen Cox is known as Kathleen. She married Dr. Charles W. Black, and they had one son. LGT p.615: EDNA OMEGA - b. Dec 8, 1908. JB: Edna Omage Bryan was b. 8 Dec 1908, d. 19 Jan 1989, and m. Lon Harrison Williams. Note well the correct spelling of her middle name. She was known as Edna. I don't know if Lon Williams had Harrison ancestry, but his middle name is suggestive. They had two daughters and two sons. LGT p.615: NELLIE JOSEPHINE - b. Sept. 26, 1910. JB: Willie Josephine Bryan was b. 26 Sep 1910, d. 2 Feb 1987, and m. William Frank Kyle. He was known as Frank. A few people called her Willie, but most people called her Bill. I knew her as Aunt Bill. They had one son and one daughter. LGT p.520: (125944) JOSEPH HARRISON (1840-1911), the son of Daniel Harrison (12594), and wife Rhoda, nee Brown, migrated with his father from Virginia to Tennessee. He married, October 24, 1872, Susan Slaton, born in Stokes County, North Carolina, July 31, 1846. She died Aug. 4, 1920. Joseph Harrison and wife resided in Jefferson County, Tennessee, where he was a well to do farmer. JB: Joseph Harrison was b. 13 Aug 1840 in Rockingham County, Virginia, d. 19 Oct 1911 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee, and m. 24 Oct 1872 in Dandridge to Susan Slaton (see her data above). He was the son of Daniel Harrison and Rhoda Maria Brown. Rhoda Maria Brown was b. 30 May 1808 in Rockingham County, Virginia and d. 8 Feb 1844. I don't know if Joseph and Daniel migrated to Tennessee before or after the death of Rhoda Maria Brown. The first two daughters of Joseph Harrison and Susan Slaton were Mary Frances Harrison and Rhoda Rebecca Harrisons. The two girls were named after their grandmothers, with Mary Frances taking both middle names and Rhoda Rebecca taking both given names. LGT: p. 520: (1259446) THOMAS SLATON ..... JB: Thomas Slaton Harrison was named for his grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. LGT: p. 520: (1259447) DANIEL - (twin of Thomas); m. Aug. 25, 1906, Ethel Cox. JB: I have the marriage date as 24 Aug 1908. Their first child was born in 1909. Ethel Cox is Mary Emily Ethel Cox who was known as Ethel. Ethel was the sister of Ruby Priscilla Cox. My father refers to Daniel as Uncle Dan Harrison. He was my father's granduncle as a Harrison and my father's "uncle by marriage" (husband of my father's aunt) as a Cox. Just for completeness, Mary Emily Ethel Cox was the daughter of George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta Nichols. LGT: p. 520: (1259449) HARRIETT - b. Aug. 22, 1886; m. Aug. 24, 1902, John Robert Moore. JB: She was known as Hattie (Aunt Hattie to my father). John Robert Moore was known as J. R. Moore or as J. Robert Moore, never as John. Hattie died 28 Aug 1943. LGT: p. 520: (1259450) PRESSLEY GEORGE ..... JB: Pressley George Harrison was known as Press (Uncle Press to my father). LGT: p. 447 and p. 330. (WILLIAM EWING) married, in 1807, Elizabeth Bryan, the daughter of William Bryan...... (EZEKIAL HARRISON) married, in 1775, Sarah Bryan..... Sarah was evidently a descendant of Morgan Bryan. JB: There were two Bryan families in Rockingham County, Virginia, at this time, and the best I can tell the two families were totally unconnected. P.447 and p.330 are talking about the Morgan Bryan family. Morgan Bryan is famous in Bryan genalogy for being a direct descendant of Brian Boru, the greatest Irish king, and for being the grandfather of Rebecca Bryan who married Daniel Boone. I am of the other Bryan family in Rockingham County (see below). LGT: p. 285 Among the subscribers to William Herron's school in 1790 were, Hannah Harrison, two scholars, James Henton, four scholars, Reuben Harrison, four scholars, and Josiah Harrison, one scholar, and in 1792, Jacob Lincoln, Soloman Mathews, Cornelius Bryan, Thomas Bryan, Thomas Bryan, Sr., Davis Caufman, George Chisman, Dives (Davis?) Bryan, John Bryan, and Michael Warren. JB: It's not always possible to sort out the two Bryan families just from the given names. My Rockingham County line is Brien O'Brien -> Cornelius O'Bryan, Sr. -> Thomas Bryan, Sr. -> Peter Bryan. The sons of Cornelius O'Bryan Sr. were Cornelius Bryan, Jr., John Andrew Bryan, and my Thomas Bryan, Sr. The spellings of the Bryan surname were fluid at this time, even for the same person. So, for example, it's dangerous to assume that Cornelius O'Bryan is necessarily the father and Cornelius Bryan is necessarily the son. But from the timeframe, I would guess that the first three Bryan subscribers were (in order) Cornelius Bryan Jr., Thomas (son of my Thomas Sr.), and my Thomas Sr. I would suspect that the Dives (Davis?) Bryan and John Bryan were of the Morgan Bryan family. LGT: pp. 294-295 (not a quote: Cornelius Bryan swears that Ezekial Harrison was a Revolutionary War Soldier) JB: I believe that this is Cornelius Bryan, Jr., son of my Cornelius O'Bryan, Sr. Cornelius Jr. was listed as a Revolutionary War soldier in Irish Settlers in America by Michael O'Brien. There are a few more Bryan listings in the book, but I do not recognize any of the other ones. I would suspect that they are of the Morgan Bryan family. 3. I would expect a big response to this query. I know a bit about this Jeremiah Harrison and wife Rebecca Ramsey, though much of it is theory. i will write as if my information is factual, yet much can be disputed. Jeremiah was from Iredell County, NC and there on the 1790 census living alone. Parentage not known but probably the family is known. Descendants of the "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" Harrisons of Augusta Co. VA - immigrant Isaiah Harrison. Rebecca Ramsey was from Mecklenburg Co NC. Both with relatives named Harrison and RAmsey moved dto Oglethorpe Co. GA where they married. Much is known of theit many descendants. CWJ

    1. [HARRISON] Harrison Belmont Co., OH
    2. Hello, I'm new to this list and hoping someone will have something on Moses Harrison who lived in Belmont Co. Ohio in 1820. HIs daughter, Thirsa Dawson, was my 3rd gr grandmother. I believe he also had a daughter, Mahala Gray, and a son, Reuben, who married Cassandra Davis. The 1830 census states that Moses was born in VA. Any information will be much appreciated. Susan
