My direct line is John Harrison b1768. He sailed to Charleston South Carolina by way of Antrim Ireland in 1790 on the Chichester. His family in England was neighbors with the Terry family. Thomas Terry married the sister of John Harrison. I have turned up the names Nancy, Rebecca and Elizabeth all refering to the Harrison sister who married Thomas Terry. She died in route from Charleston to Greenville Co SC. Thomas and John married two McDowell sisters from Charleston who were born in Antrim. The daughter of Thomas Terry married Solomon Hopkins Jr. Solomon's father was from England also and married Margaret Harrison the isiter of my John Harrison. These families remained interwoven for years and also became a big part of the Peden and Stennis/Stenhouse families. I find it interesting that another Harrison family settled in Virginia in the 1600s. They seem to be somewhat involved with a Hopkins and a Terry family and all had ties to Antrim. My Harrisons were not here early enough to fight with the American colonist against the British but every family the married into and associated with in the late 1700s were Patriots. My Harrisons lived on the East side of the Reedy River in southern Greenville County SC. The Cripple Creek Harrisons lived on the West side of the Reedy River. They lived about 2 miles from eachother near Harrison Bridge Road. I am looking for ties. Thanks Harold

S. You will find two things. 1. We are widely distributed throughout the U.S. 2. We are more heavily represented in the southeastern states of the US. My suggestion is to find a good genealogy library look for a copy of SETTLERS BY THE LONG GREY TRAIL. Basically that book traces the Harrisons and allied families around Harrisonburg, Va. That, in turn, gets a little complicated in that about three to five different families of Harrisons came into that area and spread from there into the southeastern states as well as Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia and points west. The book does a pretty good job of unraveling all that. However, it is possible you are not from any of those families. I would also exhaust all the info here in the Harrison Repository as well as looking up the nearest genealogy library at the Church of Latter Day Saints. Stay in touch. We are a huge family. My best guess is that we are practically all kin although often at some great distance. After all some say our name goes so far back that it means The Son of the Arrowmaker and that we probably came into northeast England as vikings by about 1050; as we had a tendency to breed like rabbits there are a lot of us. Seriously, some of the professionals I have read say our families, when traced back, have a tendency to implode on northeast England. Ron H.

We left England in the 1660-1670 era and went to Dublin. We were motivated by the atmosphere after Cromwell's Rebellion and our having been involved on Cromwell's side right up to our necks. My guess is that we are some part of the same family and further that if your family stayed in England after Cromwell's Rebellion you were likely impoverished due to persecution. If you have any interest in the general history of the family in Yorkshire up to about 1650 please take a look at the book SETTLERS BY THE LONG GREY TRAIL. There are many Harrison families in Yorkshire and although this presents a major challenge I am wondering if, in the records of your family histories, there is a mention (or a rumour) of a branch of the Harrison family leaving Yorkshire and immigrating to Ireland? My best guess is this happened in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Below is our family text that refers to this migration - Thomas [the eldest son of John and Mary (nee Drake) Harrison] did not stay in Ireland and around 1840, crossed the Atlantic to settle in Lonsdale, Hastings County, located on the Bay of Quinte, an arm of Lake Ontario about 180 km E of Toronto Ontario, Canada. Thomas is my g-g grandfather. "...It is known that the Irish Harrisons kept in communication with their relatives in Yorkshire. Apparently the Irish branch are the descendants of one John Harrison and Mary Drake who both came from Yorkshire.... John Harrison probably a son or grandson of the original emigrants from Yorkshire, England lived in County Down Ireland near the border of Armagh in the sight of of mountains of Mourne.
