Inside the old briefcase is an old card with information on it regarding William Henry Harrison, 9th president, March/April, 1841. On the outside of the briefcase, there is a leather tag, which reads, made in Yugoslavia on one side and Lufthansa on t he other side. If this briefcase was once carried by William Henry Harrison, it could be of great value to the family.

Hello MK Harrison & All, I descend from the same line of Harrisons as Judy Vaughn...she is the one who posted the query on Richard and Thomas Harrison. They wee from Lincoln Co. NC. Hi, this James has been mixed up with other James from Amherst Co. VA, son of Battaile and Frances White Harrison. partly due to book TN Cousins and other researchers who confused them. I have not researched your James and Winnie for a long time, I am related to Penn family of Amherst. I found your James and Winnie in E. TN years ago and wondered if they were related to my James Harrison 1797-1873 who died in Athens, Alabama; one of the first settlers to Alabama Territory - he m. a cousin Elizabeth Harrison b in South Carolina in 1815 in Huntsville, AL. We have not found their parents positively - have found a lot of possible connections and perhaps your James is one of them, our James suspected to be kin to Brunswick Co. VA Harrisons. 1734 Sep 30 Amelia County, Virginia formed from Brunswick and Prince George Counties. you may already have this info. In 1854, Eli applied for father's pension from his service in Rev. War. " James and Winny lived on the Roanoke River before and after the Rev. War. My parents were married in Amelia county, VA expects it has been at least 96 years ago, which would have been abt. 1758. My father moved to Halifax county, NC before I was born ( abt 1769 )and settled on the river. His father's Rev. War service was with the "NC Troops (militia, I think) for 9 months. He always told me he served three tours of three months each. I remember father's return "soon after the taking of Cornwallis" [1781?] butI don't know if he was at that siege. I don't remember all of the Captains my father was under, except one, a Captain Harrison, who was "no kin to him that he knew of". All of his tours were under General Greene. The battles I remember my father saying he was in was the Battle of Eutaw Springs and the capture of the noted Tory Captain (Rugedey?)." Eli stated the date of death for his mother Winny was 25 October 1847, but he also states he doesn't remember for sure. When he made this application, he was 85+ years of age, but he has no proof of when he was born or when his parents married. Revolutionary War Soldier, served from Halifax Co., N.C. under Gen. Green and Capt. Harrison. Son Eli filled for pension application # R-1653 dated 21 June 1854, from Overton Co., TN Eli Harrison filed for any money, which might have accrued as a fund owed his father for his service in the Revolution. Application is filed as R-1653, and located in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Brooks, Comptroller. Overton County, Tennessee Eli Harrison of said County, aged 85 years makes the following statement Viz: That he is the son of JAMES HARRISON and his wife WINNY HARRISON, both of whom are dead Viz: The said JAMES HARRISON died in Madison County, Kentucky about the year 1807 as well as I now recollect. I was not there when he died, my residence being here, but I heard of it soon afterward; and went up a few years afterward and found my mother, the above named Winny, there and that she had married again to one named Campbell whose given name I believe was William. I did not see my mother again until about twenty years since; When I heard that she was still alive and I went for her and found her in Estill County, Kentucky, and the above named Campbell had died several years before leaving her his widow, and that she was still his widow. I brought her home with me to this county where she remained a widow and never married again. She died at my residence in this county on the 25th day of October 1847; (Eighteen Hundred and forty seven) as I well remember but I have no memorandum of it We have no record of her age but she was more than a hundred years old, perhaps several more. My parents above named as I always heard and believed, were lawfully married in the State of Virginia and I think it was in Amelia County; and I expect it has been at least 96 years ago for their first child was seven years older than I. My father moved to Halifax County, North Carolina before I was born and settled on the Roanoke River where he lived until after the Revolutionary War. My mother's maiden name was Winney Reddin. My father, the above named James Harrison served in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Troops (militia) I think for nine months. Viz: He always told me that he served three tours of three months each. I remember very distinctly his starting and his return from the last tour after the taking of Cornwallis. But whether he was at the seige or not I do not remember. I think he was under different Captains but the name of them I do not now remember except one Captain Harrison, no kin to him however, that he knew of nor do I remember his given name. One of his tours was under General Green but that is the only commanding or General Officer that I now remember. The only battles I remember hearing him say he was in was the Battle of Eutaw Springs and the capture of Captain Rugeley. For the exact years and dates of my father and stepfather I must refer to proof to be obtained from Kentucky, near where they died. My mother, after she came to live with me used to often speak of trying to get a pension on account of my father's service in the Revolutionary War as above stated. She was told that her second marriage would prevent it so she never tried. Her second husband, the above named Campbell, told me when I saw him that he had also served in the service of the United States in the War of the Revolution. I have no memorandum of the marriage of my parents or of my own age. My parents, above named, had seven children: 1.HARRISON, Betsy who died in childhood 2.HARRISON, Sally who died in childhood 3.HARRISON, Polly who married Benjamin Moore; both are dead as I am informed by letter from their children in Arkansas. 4. HARRISON, Robert who was living in Maury County, this state when I heard from him last, a few years since. 5. HARRISON, Elizabeth who married Thornton Hardin; both died in Granville County, North Carolina upward of fifty years ago. 6. HARRISON, Elith is declarant 7. HARRISON, Charlotte widow of William Harp, when I heard from her last she was living in Arkansas a few years ago. I make this declaration for the purpose of receiving such arrears of pension as may be due the surviving children of the above named JAMES HARRISON and Winy HARRISON, his wife, leaving open for further proof whether the above named Robert Harrison and Charlotte be still living. Witness my hand in Overton County, Tennessee on this 21st day of June A.D. 1854. With further remark that unless proof be furnished of the death of brother Robert and sister Charlotte, the Commissioner of Pensions may take it for granted that I have heard that they are still living. ELI HARRISON 2 witnesses Sarah Steward) Franklin M. Smith) Overton County, Tennessee [19] Columbia, Aug. 1854 Dear Sir: Yours 25 Ult has been before me for several days and has not been answered from the fact that I was not able to give the information sought. Today I learned that a very old man by the name of Robert Harrison died in this county about a year ago. He was not possessed of any property, at least no Administration has been granted upon his estate. I can learn nothing more about the person in question. Yours truly, John B. Padgett Overton County, Tennessee: Sct Mrs. Charity Johnson, of said County, aged nearly 90 years makes the following statement Viz: That soon, after the Revolutionary War she became acquainted with one JAMES HARRISON and his wife WINNY HARRISON. They were then living together as husband and wife and were reputed to be among their neighbors and acquaintances and so continued, to do so up to the time of the death of said James Harrison according to my belief as I never heard it called in question. They moved to Kentucky where I heard the said James Harrison died not many years afterward; and that said Winney there married again to one Campbell. I knew the children of James and Winny Harrison Viz: 1. HARRISON, Polly wife of Benjamin Moore, and they moved to Arkansas and are both dead as I believe. The said Polly was older then myself. 2. Harrison, Robert about my own age and as I understand was living a few years since. 3. HARRISON, Betsy who married one Hardin; she died while I lived in North Carolina. 4. HARRISON, Eli who now lives in this County 5. HARRISON, Charlotte, who now lives in Arkansas and is the widow of William Harp These are the only children I now remember ever seeing and with all of them I was well acquainted. I always heard and believed that the above named JAMES HARRISON served in the service of the United States in the North Carolina Troops, in the Revolutionary War and such his general reputation. I always heard and believed that the above named JAMES HARRISON and WINNY his wife had been lawfully married Long before I knew them but by whom or what her maiden name was I have probably heard but have now forgotten. I never saw said Winny after she left North Carolina until about twenty years since when she came to this county to live with her son the above named Eli Harrison and she was then the reputed widow of her second husband the above named Campbell; and I understood the said Eli Harrison had gone to Kentucky and brought her here where she remained until her death never having married again after the death of said Campbell. Her death took place in this county as well as I can remember some 6 or 7 years since although I was not at her funeral but heard of her death at the time. I am disinterested. Overton County, Tennessee this 17th day of June A.D. 1854. CHARITY (X) JOHNSON (her mark) 2 witnesses F. M. Smith) Ormel Fisk) Overton County, Tennessee Sworn to before me F. M. Smith (seal) J. P. for Overton County; (Charity Johnson did not come in to court because of old age and bodily infirmities and was interviewed at home). Overton County, Tennessee SCT: Turner Johnson, of said county states that he is about 68 years of age and that about the time of his earliest recollection he got acquainted in Cranville County, North Carolina with JAMES HARRISON and his wife WINNEY HARRISON. They were living together as husband and wife and were reputed to be among their neighbors and acquaintances, and so continued up to the time they moved to Kentucky where I understood the said James Harrison died not many years afterwards. The said Winney was brought to this county from Kentucky some twenty years ago by her son where she remained until the time of her death in this county several years since but the exact date I do not now remember. She never married again after she came to this county. I have forgotten ever hearing that she married after the death of the above named James Harrison; I knew their children . . . (He names the children, their husbands or wives). I do not now remember the maiden name of said Winney Harrison but have always heard and believed she and the said James Harrison were lawfully married before the Revolutionary War; for Eli Harrison above named, their third child was about grown at my earliest recollection. The above named JAMES HARRISON as I have always heard and believed served in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Troops. My father Benjamin Johnson now deceased has so served himself and in my childhood these subjects were talked of and we were told generally who had and had not served and I remember that said JAMES HARRISON was regarded and reputed to have served as above set forth; and such was the general reputation. Overton County, Tennessee on the 21st day of June 1854 . . . as a disinterested witness. TURNER M. (X) JOHNSON (his mark) 2 witnessses F. M. Smith ? Riley I. Nyter) Sworn before F.M. Smith, J.P. State of Kentucky (County of Estill) SCT Ebenezer Park, a resident of said county, aged 78 years. says he knew one Daniel Campbell about fifty years ago or there abouts in his first wifes lifetime that after she died he remarried one WINNEY HARRISON widow of JAMES HARRISON and moved to his farm and there lived a number of years not recollected when he died leaving the said Winney a widow who then came to live with him about twelve years after the death of said Campbell when in 1832 or about that year two of her sons came from the state of Tennessee and took her home with them. She still remained the widow of the said Campbell. He further states said Campbell was by profession a school teacher and was a one eyed man and that he can not recollect the month or the year he died in. He further states that he had conversed a great many times with the said Winney while she lived with him Viz: That she remembered Bradshaws War or rather his defeat and that they came from North Carolina to the State of Kentucky at an early day; that her first husband the said James Harrison died in Madison County, Kentucky after which she married the aforesaid Campbell; That he does not recollect distinctly that she told him that the said Harrison had served in the War of the Rebellion or not but that is his impression that she did; that she was a very old woman when she left for Tennessee and a woman of great piety and faith and that he is disinterested in any matter to which this may relate . . . Witness my hand and seal this 16th day of October 1854. EBENEZER PARK Witnessed by Ebenezer Park, I. P. and Thomas Carsen, Clerk of Estill County, Kentucky. Overton County, Tennessee SCT Mrs. Polly Pentecost, of said county, aged past 51 years makes the following statements Viz: That she was well acquainted with Mrs. Winy Campbell the mother of Eli Harrison of this county and that she died in this county at the residents of her son the said Eli Harrison on the 25th day of October 1847 as I remember distinctly although I have no memorandum of her death... I knew her well for the last years or previous to her death. During that time she frequently told me that her first husband JAMES HARRISON the father of the above named Eli Harrison had served three tours in the Revolutionary War in the service of the United States in North Carolina. I do not remember the names of his officers except one Captain and General Green. I remember that she told me when her husband said James Harrison returned from his last tour he looked so bad and ragged that the youngest children did not know him. I also think she spoke of an officer by the name of Allen under whom he served. I also understood and believed that the above named JAMES HARRISON and WINNY (whose maiden name she told me was Reddin) were lawfully married many years before the Revolution somewhere in Virginia and that their youngest child CHARLOTTE HARRISON with whom I have been well acquainted was born during the Revolutionary War or soon after. She used to speak of trying to get a pension on account of the above named Revolutionary service of her husband James Harrison but she was told that her second marriage after his death would cut off her claim. When I first knew her she was the reputed widow of one Campbell who as she told me had died many years before in Kentucky and she never married again after I knew her but remained a widow of the above Campbell. Eli Harrison, above named, as I heard from them had gone to Kentucky a few years before I got acquainted with her, and had brought her home from Estill County to Overton County. When I first knew the said WINNEY CAMPBELL she always told me that she had but four children then living (she named the four children and places of residence). His name was John William (Billy) Harrison and he was married to Emily Mason in 1880 in Sumner Co. TN. Their children were Dolly, Andrew, Lonnie, Wiley, Morgan, and Johnny. Dolly married David Harrison and Andy married Carter Mitchell. Lonnie married Vangie Graves and settled in Fulton Co. KY, along with Wiley and Johnny. Billy seems to have moved between Allen Co. KY and Sumner Co. TN quite a bit. I believe he, Andy, and Morgan died and are buried in Allen Co. I have yet to learn the names of Billy's parents and would appreciate any help. He is listed in Court Records there from 1745-1800. He was living close to Isaac Robertson. Any leads would be appreciated!! Thanks Sandy
Do you know where you Harrisons were in NC? The marriage record for Richard Harrison is Lincoln County, NC; however, I don't find him in the census there. There are a couple of Isaac Robertsons in Haywood County, NC - which would put them near my Harrisons............ From reading the below - my guess would be your Richard and Thomas could be the son of the Thomas Harrison who owned land near Isaac Robertson in Augusta County, VA area. Article LXXVI. "Rockingham parish, Rockingham county, was formed from a part of Augusta in the year 1776. In that portion of Augusta now constituting the county and parish of Rockingham, there were two chapels of the Established Church. One was situated about four miles west of Harrisonburg, near the present village of Dayton. The families of Smith and Harrison, with others of the early settlers in that neighbourhood, were of the Church of England. The other chapel was situated about five miles north of Port Republic, on the road from that place to Harrisonburg. The early settlers on the Shenandoah River near Port Republic were generally of English descent, and belonged to the Established Church. John Madison, (Clerk of Augusta county, the father of Bishop Madison,) Gabriel Jones, (the most distinguished lawyer of his day in the valley,) and Thomas Lewis, (who for many years represented Augusta county in the House of Burgesses, and was one of the earliest advocates of American independence,) had married sisters, (Misses Strother, of Stafford county,) and were among the carliest settlers in that neighbourhood. Peachy R. Gilmer, John Mackall, of Maryland, and others, soon after settled among them. These families were all of the Church of England. The Rev. Alexander Balmaine for several years officiated at these two chapels, and spent much of his time with his parishioners on the Shenandoah. ----------------- North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Bride: Rachel Dawsey Groom: Richard Harrison Bond Date: 13 Feb 1786 County: Lincoln Record #: 01 056 Bondsman: Isaac Robinson Witness: Joseph Steel Bond #: 000072954 Comment: Harison Robertson Bride: Polly Wilson Groom: Isaac Robinson Bond Date: 16 Dec 1797 County: Lincoln Record #: 01 106 Bondsman: James Wilson Witness: John Dickson Bond #: 000075349 Bride: Peggy Harrison Groom: Alfred Sadler Bond Date: 26 Aug 1818 County: Lincoln Record #: 01 109 Bondsman: John Sadler Isa Witness: Henry Conner, Justice of the Peace Bond #: 000075481 Bride: Elizabeth Groom: Alexander Robertson Bond Date: 18 Sep 1797 County: Lincoln Record #: 01 106 Bondsman: Robert Givens Witness: Jo Dickson Bond #: 000075324 Comment: No Surname Bride: Anne Robertson Groom: Robert Heaker Bond Date: 29 Sep 1807 County: Lincoln Record #: 01 058 Bondsman: Herit Hunt Witness: Thos.
