Source: Tidewater Virginia Families A Magazine of History and Genealogy Volume IX, 2000-2001 p. 56 Book Notes John Anderson Brayton, Colonial Families of Surry and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia, vol 2, The Descendants of Robert Harris. xvi, 410 pp., indexed, biblio., hard cover, 1998. $______, postpaid. Every name index (as well as indexed separately by place, county and slave names). It is extensively documented and footnoted, also accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography. Mr. Brayton explains that, while his book, The Five Thomas Harrises of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (see review TVF, vol 5)was not designated as volume 1, he has now embarked on a series of books relating, not only to the Harris family, but to neighboring and related families in the same area.(see TVF, vol 6)He sorts out the Robert Harrises, then admits Robert Harris of this book did not have male descendants; however, his two daughters deserve recognition. From this he traces their descendants who represent many Southside Virginia and North Carolina families. Through five generations, he presents the families of :Crafford, House, Spiltimber, Sugar, Swann and a number of collateral lines. His research is meticulous and his conclusions drawn from extant records. Where these are not available he has carefully explained his inferences and added the necessary caveats. Mr. Brayton has once again made a major contribution to researchers with his scholarly work. Order from Genealogical Services, John A.
