    3. This is in partial reply to the query cited below. According to Dr. George K. Schweitzer's little book [packable in a ziplock bag in your suitcase] North Carolina Genealogical Research [Knoxville, TN:  Published by author, 1984]   Pasquotank County County seat:  Elizabeth City formed in 1670 from Albemarle County, court house fire in 1862, many early records missing, cause not known.... but then Dr. S lists documents which are available with dates, many of the dates very early.  But there may not be a consistent run. What films does Family History Library in Salt Lake City have for this county?  Also search familysearch.wiki for guidance on doing NC research. According to Mrs. Helen Leary [Ms. North Carolinia genealogist, I label her], whose lecture I heard a couple of decades ago, most North Carolinians came from Virginia because the barrier islands off the coast of NCpreclude a lot of ships from coming in from the Atlantic.  (A lot of my folks clustered around the Knap of Reeds area, Tar River area, Granville Co. NC, came from Surry Co., VA--and look in Isle of Wight Co. VA also. One expert from Salt Lake city says, If you are researching in Virginia, search ALL the counties.  One might say that of North Carolina also. (The Library of Virginia has a website--go down the alpha index to L and look for Land patents--the part that includes Northern Neck land patents.  The oldest patents will be at the very end of the list--with 21st century patents being at the top of the list.) This info may not help you, but the U of NC has digitized the MANY volumes of the North Carolina State and Colonial Papers, and some volumes I have read (hard copies which disappeared from my favorite research center) had lists of land owners.  There are are all sorts of papers, many official documents between government officials, but once in a while a *commoner* appears in the lists. Why don't you contact the Pasquotank-Camden Library in Elizabeth City and see who can help you [a genealogical society, for example] solve your problem. Burned courthouses are a problem for many of us!!!  Ask if there is a GenForum for that county. My 7th GGrandfather was George Harris. He lived on the upper coast of North Carolind in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He is mentioned in land patents, deeds, wills, court records, and various other documents dated in the 1690s. I can't find how he got to Pasquotank County NC (used to be a part of Albemarle County NC) . I would appreciate information that anyone else may have found on George.
